The geochemical similarities strongly suggest that they belong to the same family of oils and were derived from similar sources. \r\n\r\nThe oils are relatively high in sulfur (0.89 to 1.23 percent), rich in hydrocarbons (average 82 percent), relatively high in saturated hydrocarbon/aromatic hydrocarbon ratios (average 2.9), and based on analysis of seep oils alone, have a low API gravity (average 19.4?). The oils are for the most part severely biodegraded as attested by the loss of n-paraffin molecules. \r\n\r\nGeochemical comparison of seven crude oils collected in the vicinity of the breccia pipes indicates that the Yates oils are the likely source of the above family of oils. Six barrels of crude oil that were dumped into a potash exploration borehole near Hill C breccia pipe, to release stuck casing, are considered an unlikely source of the breccia pipe and mine seep oils. Volumetric and hydrodynamic constraints make it highly improbable that such a small volume of 'dumped' oil could migrate over distances ranging from about 600 feet to 2.5 miles to the sites of the oil shows.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82421","usgsCitation":"Palacas, J.G., Snyder, R., Baysinger, J., and Threlkeld, C.N., 1982, Geochemical analysis of potash mine seep oils, collapsed breccia pipe oil shows and selected crude oils, Eddy County, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-421, 41 p., ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82421.","productDescription":"41 p., ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140499,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0421/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34463,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0421/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae879","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Palacas, J. Samples of stream sediments, panned concentrates from stream sediments, soils, rocks, and water were collected in the geochemical survey. Analytical results show that in reconnaissance, panned concentrates are the best of the sample types used in this study to detect molybdenum mineralization. More detailed analysis of the distribution of the molybdenum is best achieved through the collection of rock samples. Hydrothermal alteration is generally not conspicuous in the study area; however, rock samples that contain molybdenite are usually slightly enriched in silver, copper, lead, and in several instances, gold. Conversely, there appear to be negative associations between molybdenum and zinc and between molybdenum and several of the rare-earth elements. Mo concentrations in the rock samples with no visible molybdenite range from undetectable at a sensitivity of 5 parts per million (ppm) to 700 ppm. Mo content in rock samples containing visible molybdenite ranges from 10 ppm to greater than 2,000 ppm. Stream-sediment values range from undetected to 15 ppm; panned concentrates from undetected to 15 ppm; soils from undetected to 20 ppm. Analyses of the water samples indicate Mo concentrations from 0.8 parts per billion (ppb) to 4.8 ppb. As currently understood, this deposit is not extensive or continuous, but drilling to provide information on the vertical extent of mineralization may alter this opinion.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82299","usgsCitation":"Lee, G.K., Antweiler, J., Love, J.D., and Benedict, J., 1982, Geologic reconnaissance and geochemical sampling survey of molybdenum mineralization near Schiestler Peak, Temple Peak Quadrangle, Sublette County, Wyoming: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-299, 205 p., 4 over-size sheets, map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82299.","productDescription":"205 p., 4 over-size sheets, map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141953,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0299/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34517,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0299/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34518,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0299/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34519,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0299/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34520,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0299/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":34521,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0299/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db688442","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lee, G. The flow regime is characterized by high summer flow of glacial meltwater and periodic flooding caused by sudden releases of glacier-dammed lakes in the headwaters. Every part of the stream is a known or potential salmon-spawning site. The stream channel is underfit, attributed to regional glacial recession and drainage changes, and locally is entrenched in response to geologically recent changes in base level. Throughout the central section of the river the channel is armored, a condition with implications for the ability of this section of channel to support the spawning and rearing of salmon. The entrenched section of the channel has been stable since 1951. Bank erosion is active both upstream and downstream from the entrenched channel, however. Although erosion rates have been generally constant since 1951, evidence suggests a possible recent decrease in bank stability that may be related to changes in river use. As population and recreation use increases, development can pose a hazard to the productivity of the stream through increased suspended-sediment concentration resulting directly from construction and, with greater potential for long-term impact, indirectly from bank erosion. A short-term hazard to both stream and developments is the cutoff of meander loops, the risk of which is increased by canals and boat slips cut in the surface layer of cohesive, erosion-resistant sediment on the flood plain within nonentrenched meander loops. A long-term hazard is an increase in bank erosion rates resulting from loss of vegetation on the high (up to 70 feet) cutbacks of entrenched and partially entrenched section. Though the proximity of the Hybla Gold working point to the chimney of the Dining Car event was important to the experiment, the observable geologic effects from Dining Car on the Hybla Gold site were minor. Overburden above the working point is approximately 385 m (1,263 ft). The pre-Tertiary surface, probably quartzite, lies approximately 254 m (833 ft) below the working point. \r\n\r\nThe drifts are mined in zeolitized ash-fall tuffs of tunnel bed 4, subunits K and J, all of Miocene age. The working point is in subunit 4J. Geologic structure in the region around the working point is not complex. The U12e.20 main drift follows the axis of a shallow depositional syncline. A northeast-dipping fault with displacement of approximately 3 m (10 ft) passes within 15.2 m (50 ft) of the Hybla Gold working point. Three faults of smaller displacement pass within 183-290 m (600-950 ft) of the working point, and are antithetic to the 3-m (10-ft) fault. The proposed site was believed to be a relatively undisturbed synclinal structure containing a thick argillite unit of Misslsslppian age, the Eleana Formation unit J, which would be the emplacement medium. Data acquisition for the geophysical studies was constrained because of rugged topography in a block of Tipplpah Limestone overlying the central part of the proposed site. This study employed gravity, magnetic, seismic refraction and reflection, and four distinct electrical methods to try and define the structural integrity and shape of the proposed repository medium. Detailed and regional gravity work revealed complex structure at the site. Magnetics helped only in identifying small areas of Tertiary volcanic rocks because of low magnetization of the rocks. Seismic refraction assisted in identifying near surface faulting and bedrock structure. Difficulty was experienced in obtaining good quality reflection data. This implied significant structural complexity but also revealed the principal features that were supported by other data. Electrical methods were used for fault identification and for mapping of a thick argillaceous unit of the Eleana Formation in which nuclear waste was to be emplaced. \r\n\r\nThe geophysical studies indicate that major faults along the axis of Syncline Ridge and on both margins have large vertical offsets displacing units so as not only to make mining difficult, but also providing potential paths for waste migration to underlying carbonate aquifers. The Eleana Formation appeared heterogeneous, which was inferred to be due to structural complexity. Only a small region in the northwest part of the study area was found to contain a thick and relatively undisturbed volume of host rock.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82145","usgsCitation":"Hoover, D., Hanna, W.F., Anderson, L.A., Flanigan, V.J., and Pankratz, L.W., 1982, Geophysical studies of the Syncline Ridge area, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-145, 72 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82145.","productDescription":"72 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140180,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0145/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34602,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0145/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67b437","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoover, D.B.","contributorId":37734,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hoover","given":"D.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154740,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hanna, W. Color, water content and sensitivity of the ash were measured in the field. The ash alternated between reddish brown and dark reddish brown in color and had water contents as high as 392%. A downhole vane shear device measured sensitivities as high as 6.9. A series of laboratory tests including grain size distribution, Atterberg limits, X-ray diffraction analysis, total carbon determination, vane shear, direct shear and triaxial tests were performed to determine the composition and geotechnical properties of the ash. The ash is very fine grained, highly plastic and composed mostly of gibbsite and amorphous material presumably allophane. The ash has a high angle of internal friction ranging from 40-43? and is classified as medium to very sensitive. \r\n\r\nA series of different ash layers was distinguished on the basis of plasticity and other geotechnical properties. Sensitivity may be due to a metastable fabric, cementation, leaching, high organic content, and thixotropy. The sensitivity of the volcanic ash deposits near Hilo is consistent with documented slope instability during earthquakes in Hawaii. The high angles of internal friction and cementation permit very steep slopes under static conditions. However, because of high sensitivity of the ash, these slopes are particularly susceptible to seismically-induced landsliding.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82279","usgsCitation":"Wieczorek, G.F., Jibson, R., Wilson, R.C., and Buchanan-Banks, J., 1982, Geotechnical properties of ash deposits near Hilo, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-279, 20 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82279.","productDescription":"20 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140189,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0279/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34603,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0279/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67b085","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wieczorek, G. Virtually all production from the U.S. OCS emanates from the Gulf of Mexico. In calendar year 1981, for the two primary categories of hydrocarbons produced from the OCS, oil/condensate and gas, Gulf production accounted for over 94 and 99 percent, respectively. Oil production for 1981 was 0.27 billion barrels, and gas production was 4.84 trillion cubic feet. Although most of the shallow-water areas of the Gulf of Mexico Continental Shelf have been explored, considerable amounts of hydrocarbons may yet be discovered in deepwater locations. Industry has been developing the technology to explore deepwater areas, and interest in these portions of the Gulf is increasing.

As of December 1981, the total of all identified oil and gas fields in the Gulf of Mexico OCS increased to 505 from 482 at the end of the previous year; this net increase of 23 fields discovered in 1981 compares to net increases of 50 in 1980, 51 in 1979, and 25 in 1978. The number of active fields increased from 466 in 1981, and fields for which reserve estimates have been made increased from 419 to 445. As of January 1982, 19,736 offshore oil and gas wells had been drilled in the Gulf of Mexico OCS; most of the wells (17,257) are off the coast of Louisiana. Currently, there are 2,027 active oil and gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico; 1,200 of them are producing leases.

The Department of the Interior's 5-year OCS oil and gas leasing schedule projects 2 to 3 Gulf of Mexico lease sales per year through 1987, for a total of 12 offerings, and starting in 1983, the Gulf will be divided into three planning areas. Resource estimates issued for the following Gulf of Mexico lease sales are as follows: Lease Sale 67--75.16 million barrels of oil and 1.03 trillion cubic feet of gas; Lease Sale 69--48.24 million barrels of oil and .785 trillion cubic feet of gas; Lease Sale 72--97 million barrels of oil and 1.04 trillion cubic feet of gas; Lease Sale 74--29 million barrels of oil and .525 trillion cubic feet of gas; and Lease Sale 79--123 million barrels of oil and .157 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Since 1972, oil production in the Gulf of Mexico has declined each year, and gas production, thought to have reached its peak in 1981, is also expected to begin a noticeable decline. To date, most of the oil and gas discovered in the Gulf has occurred on the Texas-Louisiana Shelf, but in the future, oil and gas exploration is likely to include a number of areas where previous leasing has not been extensive. The West Florida Shelf, especially the area off the coast of southwest Florida and the deepwater areas southeast of the Mississippi River Delta, are potential areas for future exploration. As production begins to decline from mature fields, smaller fields will become economically producible, and implementation of secondary and tertiary recovery techniques will make it possible to extract more oil and gas from reservoirs than was possible previously.

Each year, hundreds of miles of pipelines are added to the existing network in the Gulf of Mexico. Recently, there have been a number of proposals for deepwater ports and transshipment terminals as well as projects including the deepening or widening of existing conventional ports. The process of transportation planning in the Gulf of Mexico is done by industry and government through the Intergovernmental Planning Program and its Regional Technical Working Group.

The Gulf Coast region is an area of significant onshore oil and gas activity, with many cities and towns offering a wide range of services and supplies to onshore and offshore oil operators and their ancillary industries. While the western and central Gulf oil and gas support infrastructure is quite extensive and complex, the support facilities in the eastern Gulf are still in the early stages of development. In the likely event of a decline in Gulf OCS production, imported oil may be substituted for dwindling domestic stocks at Gulf Coast refineries. Planners must consider impacts generated by changes in oil and gas productivity and focus on finding alternative uses for facilities and alternative employment for workers.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82242","usgsCitation":"Havran, K.J., Wiese, J., Collins, K.M., and Kurz, F.N., 1982, Gulf of Mexico summary report 3 August 1982: A revision of Outer Continental Shelf oil and gas activities in the Gulf of Mexico and their onshore impacts: Gulf of Mexico summary report 2, August 1981: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-242, Report: ix, 99 p.; 3 Plates: 35.33 x 16.43 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82242.","productDescription":"Report: ix, 99 p.; 3 Plates: 35.33 x 16.43 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":409398,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0242/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":409397,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0242/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":409396,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0242/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140826,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0242/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":409395,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0242/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas","otherGeospatial":"Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -96.240234375,\n              26.82407078047018\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.14453125,\n              26.82407078047018\n            ],\n            [\n              -83.14453125,\n              30.14512718337613\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.240234375,\n              30.14512718337613\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.240234375,\n              26.82407078047018\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a1ab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Havran, Kenneth J.","contributorId":40983,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Havran","given":"Kenneth","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154784,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wiese, J.D.","contributorId":82303,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wiese","given":"J.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154785,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Collins, Karen M.","contributorId":11216,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Collins","given":"Karen","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154783,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Kurz, Frederick N.","contributorId":47785,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kurz","given":"Frederick","email":"","middleInitial":"N.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154782,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The area is underlain by Permian, Pennsylvanian, Mississippian rocks. The Breathitt Formation of Pennsylvanian age crops out in about 75% of the area and contains most of the coal. About 22 million tons of coal were produced in the area in 1978, 52% from surface mines. The terrain is steep with acidic soils. Forestry and pastures are the principal land uses. Precipitation ranges from 47 to 54 inches per year, and the 24-hour 10-year frequency storm averages 4.5 inches. Flood prone areas along the rivers have been defined or can be determined from relations with drainage area and physiography. Low flows are poorly sustained, with most streams draining less than 100 square miles approaching a 7-day 10-year minimum flow of zero. Ground water is generally of good quality, although high iron concentrations are common. Sandstones are the principal aquifers. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, and yields of wells are usually less than 50 gallons per minute but range from about 1 to 250. Mine drainage affects the quality of streamflow at most sites in mined basins. Sulfate concentrations are as high as 1,000 milligrams per liter. Other constituents such as iron and manganese also occur in higher concentrations in waters of mined basins. Acid mine drainage generally is neutralized near its source. Most of the water in streams has pH values in the 7-8 range. The mapped albedo changes were field checked in April 1981. Decreases in albedo were associated with increases in vegetation, primarily the flush of annual vegetation and the regrowth of vegetation in chained areas and sites of past fires. Increases in albedo were due to recent fires. \r\n\r\nContinuous monitoring of changes in albedo using current, rather than historical, Landsat images can provide the Bureau of Land Management with a means of monitoring vegetation growth, determining areas of high fire potential, and more efficiently deploying of field personnel to sites where severe changes are occuring in the quality of the land and vegetation resources. For example, an albedo change could be an indication of encroachment by an invader species. Similarly, it could indicate where rangeland is being lost to desertification.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr8214","usgsCitation":"Robinove, C.J., 1982, Landsat monitoring of albedo changes in northwestern Arizona, 1977-1980: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-14, 14 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr8214.","productDescription":"14 p.","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":34652,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0014/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":140323,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0014/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b20e4b07f02db6abb65","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Robinove, Charles Joseph","contributorId":71153,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robinove","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"Joseph","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154995,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
