The compositional dependence of the equilibrium constant was calculated from the composition of saturated (stoichiometric) solutions and used to calculate the activities and activity coefficients of CaCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;and SrCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;in the solid Ca<sub>(1&minus;<i>x</i>)</sub>Sr<sub><i>x</i></sub>CO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;at 25 and 76&deg;C. The results show that the solid-solution is not regular but unsymmetrical. The equilibrium constant is denned as a function of the SrCO</span><sub>3</sub><span>&nbsp;mole fraction,&nbsp;</span><i>x</i><span>, by the relation</span></p>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"formula\">\n<div class=\"mathml\"><span id=\"mmlsi2\" class=\"mathmlsrc\"><img class=\"imgLazyJSB inlineImage\" title=\"\" src=\"http://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-0016703787903243-si2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"36\" data-inlimgeid=\"1-s2.0-0016703787903243-si2.gif\" data-loaded=\"true\" /></span></div>\n</div>\n<p><span>where&nbsp;</span><i>R</i><span>&nbsp;is the gas constant,&nbsp;</span><i>T</i><span>&nbsp;is in Kelvins and&nbsp;</span><i>K</i><sub><i>A</i></sub><span>&nbsp;and&nbsp;</span><i>K</i><sub><i>S</i></sub><span>&nbsp;are the aragonite and strontianite equilibrium constants.</span></p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p id=\"\">The experimental results indicate the Henry's law coefficients of SrCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;in aragonites containing 0 to 6 mole percent SrCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;are approximately 91&plusmn; 8 and 23 &plusmn; 1 at 25 and 76&deg;C, respectively and for strontianites the Henry's law coefficients and applicable compositional ranges are approximately 7.3 &plusmn; 0.3 (0.84 &le;&nbsp;<i>x</i>&nbsp;&le; 1.00) and 3.3 &plusmn; 0.5 (0.50 &le;&nbsp;<i>x</i>&nbsp;&le; 1.00) at 25 and 76&deg;C, respectively. Substitution of small amounts of Sr in aragonite and Ca in strontianite initially increases the stability of the solid. The most stable aragonites and strontianites contain 0.58 &plusmn; 0.03 and 12.5 &plusmn; 1.1 mole percent SrCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;and CaCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;at 25&deg;C and 3.1 &plusmn; 0.3 and 17.2 &plusmn; 1.1 mole percent SrCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;and CaCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;at 76&deg;C, respectively. The spinode occurs over the regions 0.065 &plusmn; 0.001 &le;&nbsp;<i>x</i>&nbsp;&le; 0.620 &plusmn; 0.014 at 25&deg;C and 0.103 &plusmn; 0.007 &le;&nbsp;<i>x</i>&nbsp;&le; 0.585 &plusmn; 0.019 at 76&deg;C where all compositions are unstable. A miscibility gap occurs over the compositional ranges 0.0058 &plusmn; 0.0003 &le;&nbsp;<i>x</i>&nbsp;&le; 0.875 &plusmn; 0.011 at 25&deg;C and 0.031 &plusmn; 0.003 &le;&nbsp;<i>x</i>&nbsp;&le; 0.828 &plusmn; 0.011 at 76&deg;C and is in reasonable agreement with reported compositions of natural aragonites and strontianites. Marine aragonites are neither at equilibrium nor stoichiometric saturation with surface seawater. The experimentally observed distribution coefficient of Sr in aragonite is 12 times larger than the calculated equilibrium value (0.095) at 25&deg;C. The geostrophic current has produced sediment drifts that are covered with bedforms. The sediment drifts are difficult to detect on </span><i>Gloria</i><span> long-range side-scan sonar data but are easily resolved on seismic-reflection records as anomalously thick accumulations of sediment banked against either buried or outcropping basement highs. The bedforms ornamenting the drift surfaces were subdivided into 1,000-m water-depth intervals, and their dimensions were tabulated. There are few bedforms in water depths less han 2,000 m, but from depths between 2,000 and 4,000 m they are numerous and have a mean wavelength of 695 m. Bedforms from depths greater than 4,000 m have a mean wavelength of 999 m. The different wavelengths from different water depths suggest two distinct and separated boundary flows. The wave heights of all bedforms found in water depths greater than 2,000 m are less than 10 m. In order to investigate the continuity of sediment drifting through geological time, the stratigraphic section drilled at DSDP Site 398 was reinterpreted and, using seismic-reflection profiles, was traced throughout the northern Iberian margin. Together, the lithostratigraphic and seismic data indicate that sediment drifting developed along this margin in the Eocene. The lithofacies of the Eocene section is t e oldest to have numerous layers of sand and silt. An unconformity separates the Eocene section from the latest Miocene-Pliocene section. The unconformity is interpreted to be the result of the initial pulses of Mediterranean outflow that followed the Messinian desiccation events. Relationships between gas permeability and net confining pressure were measured for cycles of loading and unloading. For some samples, permeabilities were measured both along and across bedding planes. Large variations in stress sensitivity of permeability were observed from one sample to another. The ratio of permeability at a nominal confining pressure of 500 psi to that at 5000 psi was used to define a stress sensitivity ratio. For a given sample, confining pressure vs permeability followed a linear log-log relationship, the slope of which provided an index of pressure sensitivity. This index, as obtained for first unloading data, was used in testing relationships between stress sensitivity and other measured rock properties. Pressure sensitivity tended to increase with increase in carbonate content and depth, and with decrease in porosity, permeability and sodium feldspar. However, scatter in these relationships increased as permeability decreased. Tests for correlations between pressure sensitivity and various linear combinations of variables are reported. We compared the three models at epoch 1985.0 against each other and against a new model based on observatory data available as of July 1, 1985. These comparisons showed that one of the three candidate models disagreed more with the other two and our model, especially in the eastern Pacific. None of the candidate models was seen to respond to a change in the secular variation of the vertical component that appears to have taken place most strongly in the western Pacific area since 1982. The lack of satellite data was seen to be a significant handicap towards prediction of the field change over most of the Earth's surface, especially the southern oceans. The model is based on probabilities of transition of particles among four different sediment storage reservoirs, called active (often mobilized), semiactive, inactive, and stable (hardly ever mobilized). The probabilities are derived from computed sediment residence times. Two aspects of sediment storage are investigated: flushing times of sediment out of a storage reservoir and changes in the quantity of sediment stored in different reservoirs due to seasonal sediment transport into, and out of, a reach. We apply the model to Redwood Creek, a gravel bed river in northern California. Although the Redwood Creek data set is incomplete, the application serves as an example of the sorts of analyses that can be done with the method. The application also provides insights into the sediment storage process. Sediment flushing times are highly dependent on the degree of interaction of the stable reservoir with the more mobile sediment reservoirs. The most infrequent and highest intensity storm events, which mobilize the stable reservoir, are responsible for the long-term shifts in sediment storage. Turnover times of channel sediment in all but the stable reservoir are on the order of 750 years, suggesting this is all the time needed for thorough interchange between these sediment compartments and cycling of most sediment particles from the initial reservoir to the ocean. Finally, the Markov model has adequately characterized sediment storage changes in Redwood Creek for 1947–1982, especially for the active reservoir. Ratios of the elements with creatinine were considerably higher for fed than for fasted animals, and ratios for fed wolves compared favorably with ratios from wolf urine in snow along trails leading from kills. Thus, wolf urine in the snow can indicate whether wolves have fed recently, and a series of such urine collections from any given pack can indicate relative nutritional The groups were fed for 9 days and fasted for 10 days in a cross-over design. Blood and urine samples and weight data were collected every 2-3 days during each trial. Hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations, red blood cell (RBC) counts, and hematocrits (HCT) were elevated in both groups during fasting. White blood cell (WBC) counts, serum urea nitrogen (SUN), triiodothyronine (T3), and insulin concentrations decreased during fasting in Groups A and B. Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), serum cholesterol, triglyceride, and iron (Fe) concentrations were diminished in fasted Group A wolves compared to fed Group B. Creatine phosphokinase (CPK) concentrations were elevated in fed Group A wolves. Serum creatinine (C) concentrations were reduced in both groups during feeding. Urinary urea: creatinine (U:C), potassium:creatine (K:C), and sodium:creatinine (Na:C, pooled Group A and B data) ratios decreased in fasted wolves. Differences were not found between fed and fasted wolves for mean corpuscular volume (MCV), serum cortisol, glucose, calcium (Ca), bilirubin, serum glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase, and luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), and urinary calcium: creatine (Ca:C) ratios. The use of remote sensing, a satellite-tracked buoy, and in situ oceanographic measurements showed the presence of eddies with orbital speeds of 30 to 40 centimeters per second and lifetimes of at least 20 days. Ice ablation measurements made within one of these ice-ocean eddies indicated that melting, which proceeded at rates of 20 to 40 centimeters per day, is an important process in determining the ice-edge position. On the basis of lithology and structural position, it probably represents the metamorphosed equivalent of the Rattlesnake Creek terrane. The Marble Mountain terrane consists of sedimentary, oceanic mafic volcanic, and ultramafic rocks and is structurally and probably stratigraphically overlain by arc-derived meta-volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks of the western Hayfork terrane. The contact between the two terranes is interpreted to be a zone of tectonic and stratigraphic interlayering, but superimposed metamorphism has largely obscured its original character.</p><p>Metamorphism of the assembled mélange and overlying western Hayfork terrane took place under low-pressure amphibolite facies conditions, a conclusion based primarily on the presence of prograde andalusite in pelitic rocks. Metamorphism was accompanied by penetrative deformation, which produced two generations of northeast-trending, subhorizontal isoclinal recumbent folds and associated axial-planar foliation; mineral and stretching lineations also formed at this time. These events preceded the intrusion of the 162 ± 2-Ma Wooley Creek batholith. A later episode of deformation and recrystallization locally produced north-northeast–trending upright folds and steeply dipping crenulation cleavage. Greenschist to lower amphibolite facies metamarphic assemblages that were developed at this time overprint the earlier structures. The latter deformational event may reflect the westward thrusting of the western Paleozoic and Triassic belt over the subjacent western Jurassic belt during Late Jurassic time.</p><p>The Marble Mountain/Rattlesnake Creek terranes probably represent oceanic crust which lay to the west of an active subduction zone along the western margin of North America during Late Triassic and Early Jurassic time and which was trapped in the forearc region when subduction stepped westward in earliest Middle Jurassic time. Newly initiated subduction led to the inception of the western Hayfork arc, which was built upon the Marble Mountain/Rattlesnake Creek oceanic basement. The mélange may have been formed by imbrication of the oceanic lithosphere trapped between the new trench and the magmatic axis of the incipient arc. Continued convergence led to juxtaposition of oceanic and arc-derived rocks, to regional metamorphism, and to deformation of the mélange and overlying volcaniclastic rocks. The study area is underlain by 129 sq mi (40% of the area) of stratified drift which, where sufficiently saturated and permeable, form the most productive aquifers in the area. Eight towns use the stratified-drift aquifers for municipal water supply. The saturated thickness of stratified drift in the study area ranges from 0 or &lt; 20 ft near aquifer boundaries to more than 100 ft in the Souhegan and Merrimack River valleys. The transmissivity of stratified drift ranges from &lt; 2,000 sq ft/day throughout much of the area to more than 8,000 sq ft/day in the communities of Amherst, Brookline, Hollis, Hudson, Litchfield, Merrimack, Milford, Nashua, and Pelham. Directions of groundwater flow are generally from valley walls to surface waters, which act as drains for the stratified drift aquifers. The estimated total yield of community water-supply systems in the study area (surface and groundwater combined) is 22 mgd (million gallons per day). Analytical modeling indicates that an additional 12 mgd could be obtained from six aquifers located in the communities of Amherst, Litchfield, Merrimack, Milford, and Pelham. Other aquifers in the area, not modeled in the study, could also provide increased amounts of water especially where yields could be augmented by induced recharge of surface water. Groundwater quality in the study area is characterized by naturally elevated levels of iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn). Of 32 wells sampled, 7 exceeded EPA recommended drinking water limits for both Fe and Mn, and 3 wells exceeded the Mn limit only. The average total dissolved solids concentration for 32 samples was 121 mg/L. Groundwater in the area is slightly corrosive; pH 's ranged from 5.0-7.3. Groundwater contamination has been detected at two ' Superfund ' sites in the study area located in Milford and Nashua. At both sites, contamination of groundwater has caused the shutdown of municipal and private water supply wells. The widespread effect of applying highway deicing chemicals on groundwater quality is reflected by sodium (Na) concentrations that average 24 mg/L throughout the study area. In one experiment, rainbow trout fingerlings were fed diets containing three levels of lysine (2.4, 3.1 and 3.8 g per 100 g diet), two levels of arginine (1.7 and 2.5 g per 100 g diet) and two mixtures of Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;and Cl in a 3×2×2 factorial design. The mixtures varied in the proportions of cations to anions such that Cl equalled the sum of Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;and K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(cations − anions = 0 mEq/kg diet) in one mixture and exceeded the sum of Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;and K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(cations − anions = −200 mEq/kg diet) in the second mixture. Growth and efficiency of feed conversion were not affected by dietary lysine and arginine in fish fed diets containing − 200 mEq/kg balance, but when fish were fed diets containing a 0 mEq/kg balance, 3.8% lysine and a combination of 3.1% lysine and 2.5% arginine depressed both measures of response. Trout receiving the 0 mEq/kg cation-anion balance had significantly higher free histidine concentrations and lower free lysine concentrations in muscle and higher hepatic arginase activity (P≤0.01) than those receiving −200 mEq/kg. In another experiment, trout were fed diets containing three levels of K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(21, 191 and 360 mEq/kg), two levels of Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(21 and 191 mEq/kg) and two levels of Cl</span><sup>−</sup><span>&nbsp;(179 and 347 mEq/kg) in a 3×2×2 factorial design. Growth and efficiency of feed conversion were depressed and hepatosomatic index increased with higher levels of dietary K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(P≤0.01), Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(P≤0.05) and Cl (P≤0.01), with significant K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;x Cl</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(P≤0.01) and K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;x Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;x Cl (P≤0.05) interactions. Increasing dietary K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;resulted in increased levels of muscle free histidine and decreased levels of muscle free lysine and arginine (P≤0.01), while increasing dietary Cl increased muscle free lysine, the effect of which was dependent on dietary potassium (K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;x Cl</span><sup>−</sup><span>, P≤0.01). It is concluded that dietary levels of K</span><sup>+</sup><span>, Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;and Cl</span><sup>−</sup><span>, irrespective of overall cation-anion balance of these minerals, affects growth rate, efficiency of feed utilization and the metabolism of basic amino acids in tissues of trout. Excess lysine causes depressed growth and efficiency of feed utilization. I analyzed measured swimming speeds for dolphins of the<span>&nbsp;</span><i>Stenella-Delphinus</i><span>&nbsp;</span>morphology. A conservative hydrodynamics model equivalent to 119% of the drag of a rigid fusiform body (the added 19% compensates for the drag induced by propulsion) and a metabolic rate of 13.4 times the projected resting metabolic rate are consistent with measured maximum steady-state speeds. Measured routine swimming speeds are also consistent with this same hydrodynamics model and with metabolic rates for routine activity of other swimming and terrestrial homeotherms. The study also shows that trace amounts of nickel can be spectrally detected in the olivine structure. We show that significant compositional information can only be extracted at relatively high resolution, because the overall spectral characteristics of the olivines change only subtly as a function of the Fe/Mg ratio. Significant spectral variation as a function of grain size is also demonstrated, adding a further complication to the interpretation of remotely sensed data from olivine-rich surfaces. This laboratory study is expected to aid in the interpretation of remotely sensed data from both terrestrial and extraterrestrial bodies. Terrestrial applications may include the recognition of ultramafic, ultrabasic, and basaltic terrains which in themselves may have mineral potential. Among extraterrestrial applications, the asteroids are obvious candidates for further examination if instrumentation can provide the necessary wavelength coverage, resolution, and signal-to-noise ratio so that spectra can be compared to those laboratory data discussed here. These basement faults appear to have been active through much of geologic time. Indeed, more than 45 percent of modern earthquakes occur along these narrow zones here termed 'lateral ramps. ' Because of this seismic activity, these lateral ramps are likely to be zones that are prone to slope failure.
