Seven species are strophomenaceans, including six from the Middle Ordovician and one, Leptaena kentuckiana n. sp., from the Upper Ordovician. Pionomena recens Neuman from the Middle Ordovician is referred to the Davidsoniacea. Three of these species also occur in the Middle Ordovician of the northern Mississippi Valley region. Rafinesquina is abundant at many localities throughout the Middle Ordovician section of Kentucky. Other silicified strophomenaceans are rare and have been recovered only from the lower part of the Middle Ordovician section of the area. Oepikinia minnesotensis has a high degree of polymorphism of outline shape, profile, and ornament. Some Middle Ordovician species heretofore placed in Strophomena are reassigned to Tetraphalerella. Furcitella and Holtedahlina are differentiated only by the presence of a prominent fold in adult valves of Holtedaklina because a bifid dorsal medial ridge occurs in species of both genera and because the transmuscle ridges of both genera are similar. The possession by Pionomena recens of a perideltidium, dentifers, dorsal medial node, and impunctate shell indicates relationship of this genus to the Davidsoniacea.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/pp1066L","usgsCitation":"Pope, J., 1982, Some silicified strophomenacean brachiopods from the Ordovician of Kentucky, with comments on the genus Pionomena: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1066, p. These aquifers are the chief sources of water beneath the coal-bearing rocks of the Pennsylvanian System and are widely use for farm and home requirements. The aquifers crop out in the western part of the area and dip southeastward 35 feet per mile. At Lake Hope, in northeastern Vinton County, the aquifers are the deepest sources of ground water in Ohio, occurring at depths locally exceeding 700 feet. At McArthur, in Vinton County, the aquifers yield about 300,000 gallons per day for municipal and industrial use, but withdrawal has been accompanied by declining ground-water levels during the past 10 years in a 10-square-mile area. The map is based on measurements from a network of 83 observation wells. The highest levels of the potentiometric surface, 57 and 58 feet above sea level, were measured near the outcrop-subcrop of the aquifer in topographically high areas of Anne Arundel and Prince Georges Counties. The potentiometric surface slopes to the southeast to about sea level along much of the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay. Three distinct and extensive cones of depression have developed in the potentiometric surface around the well fields of the Annapolis area, Waldorf area, and Chalk Point. Several square miles of each cone are below sea level, and in some areas at Chalk Point and Waldorf, the cone is more than 50 feet below sea level. The network of wells was developed as part of the cooperative program between the U.S. Geological Survey, the Maryland Geological Survey, and the Maryland Energy Administration. Data were assembled to define, on a reconnaissance level, water-quality conditions in major aquifers and to develop an understanding of factors that affected conditions in 1978 and could affect future ground-water quality. Water-quality characteristics determined include specific conductance, pH, water temperature, major dissolved cations, major dissolved anions, and coliform bacteria. Concentrations of hardness, nitrite plus nitrate, coliform bacteria, dissolved solids, sulfate, chloride, fluoride , iron, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium or bicarbonate exceed public drinking water regulation limits or were anomalously high in some water samples. Highly mineralized ground water probably is due to the natural composition of the aquifers and not to surface contamination. Concentrations of coliform bacteria that exceed public drinking water limits and anomalously high dissolved nitrite-plus-nitrite concentrations are from 15- to 20-year old irrigation wells in heavily irrigated or more densely populated areas of the valleys. Ground-water quality and quantity in most of the study area are sufficient to meet current (1978) population and economic demands. Ground water in all valleys is characterized by significant concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate plus carbonate ions. Variations in the general trend of ground-water composition (especially in the Lemhi Valley) probably are most directly related to variability in aquifer lithology and proximity of sampling site to source of recharge. In 1975, the population of the area was about 48,000. Water use averaged 11.4 million gallons per day; about half was pumped from wells and half from streams.</p><p>The area receives 57 inches of precipitation per year on the average. Much of this water enters the surficial sand aquifer, seeps to streams, or enters the underlying water-bearing zone of the upper confining unit and the Floridan aquifer.</p><p>The water-bearing zone of the upper confining unit is used for rural domestic supplies and is also important because the water it stores is a source of recharge to the underlying Floridan aquifer.</p><p>The Floridan aquifer underlies all of the Ochlockonee River area and, except for the city of Quincy, is the principal source of municipal water supply. Well yields range from as little as 20 gallons per minute in Gadsden County to as much as 4,500 gallons per minute in Leon County. The transmissivity of the Floridan aquifer ranges from about 170 feet squared per day in the southern part of the area to 5,100 feet squared per day in the northern part. Storage coefficients calculated from two aquifer tests are 2 x 10-4 and 2.6 x 10-4. At Tallahassee, directly east of the Ochlockonee River, transmissivity is as high as 130,000 feet squared per day. The Floridan aquifer is recharged by downward leakage of water from the surficial sand aquifer and from the water-bearing zone of the upper confining unit. The Floridan aquifer is also recharged directly by rainfall in northern Leon County and in southern Georgia where it is near or at land surface. Ground water moves toward the southeast from the potentiometric high in southwestern Gadsden County and south from Leon County toward Wakulla Springs, located about 10 miles south of Tallahassee. The potentiometric surface of the upper part of the Floridan aquifer ranges from about 50 feet higher than that of the middle and lower part of the Floridan aquifer in southwestern Gadsden County to about 10 feet higher near Midway in eastern Gadsden County. The aquifer discharge in the basin area is by wells and by natural discharge through seeps and springs along the Ochlockonee River and at Ochlockonee Bay.</p><p>Water levels in the Floridan aquifer fluctuate in response to seasonal and long-term variations in rainfall. Hydrographs do not show evidence of any long-term water-level declining trend.</p><p>Saline water (more than 1,000 milligrams per liter of dissolved solids) occurs naturally within the Floridan aquifer throughout the Ochlockonee River area at depths ranging from 200 to 600 feet below sea level. The depth below which dissolved solids in water exceed 500 milligrams per liter in the Havana area ranges from 200 to 250 feet below sea level; in the Quincy area, from 400 to 450 feet below; and in the Greensboro area, from 200 to 250 feet below.</p><p>Concentrations of dissolved solids in water pumped from wells tapping the Floridan aquifer in the Ochlockonee River area range from 60 to 1,370 milligrams per liter; chloride from 0 to 630 milligrams per liter; sulfate from 0.0 to 280 milligrams per liter; and fluoride from 0.0 to 1.3 milligrams per liter.</p><p>Streamflow originating in the Ochlockonee River area in Florida averages about 1,000 million gallons per day; minimum discharge during dry periods is about 285 million gallons per day. Stream yields range from 0.90 to 2.62 cubic feet per second per square mile. Quincy Creek, at State Highway 267 at Quincy, the primary source of water for the city of Quincy, yields an average flow of 19 million gallons per day, has a 7-day 10-year low flow of 2.8 million gallons per day, and contains water of acceptable quality. The chemical quality of most streams in the basin is acceptable for most uses. Dissolved-solids concentration is generally less than 135 milligrams per liter; pH ranges from 5.3 to 7.3 units; color from 20 to 90 platinum-cobalt units; and turbidity from 3 to 85 Jackson turbidity units. Variations in chloride concentration in water from the Ochlockonee River (5.2 to 140 milligrams per liter) are influenced by discharge of food processing waste and municipal sewage plant effluent to the river.</p><p>The three large lakes in the basin range from 4,000 to 7,000 acres in surface area. All are now used primarily for recreation. Dissolved-solids concentrations of water from the lakes range from less than 20 to 50 milligrams per liter. A major flood occurred in 1975 when the Ochlockonee River near Havana reached the third highest stage of record and the peak flood at the Sopchoppy River exceeded that for the period of record (11 years in 1975); no significant damage occurred.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr811121","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Northwest Florida Water Management District, Gadsden County and the City of Quincy","usgsCitation":"Pascale, C.A., and Wagner, J.R., 1982, Water resources of the Ochlockonee River area, northwest Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-1121, vii, 114 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr811121.","productDescription":"vii, 114 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":406025,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1121/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142486,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1121/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","otherGeospatial":"Ochlockonee River area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -84.75814819335936,\n              29.846599772557077\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.38735961914062,\n              29.846599772557077\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.38735961914062,\n              30.198552988693212\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.75814819335936,\n              30.198552988693212\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.75814819335936,\n              29.846599772557077\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f4e4b07f02db5f0499","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pascale, Charles A.","contributorId":99978,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pascale","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161693,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wagner, Jeffry R.","contributorId":48179,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wagner","given":"Jeffry","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161692,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The loss on fusion (LOF) results are comparable to the conventional time-consuming wet-chemical procedure but require no additional effort or cost when conducted as part of the usual sample preparation procedure for quantitative X-ray fluorescence spectrometric analysis (XRF). The technique utilizes the weight loss of the rock when fused with a suitable blend of lithium tetraborate and lithium nitrate. A simple mass balance model is used to represent the thermogravimetric results and to identify the nature of the high temperature mass alteration reactions taking place in the fusion melt. Under the sample preparation conditions used in this study, sulfide appears to be retained quantitatively in the fusion disc sulfate, a phenomenon permitting the determination of sulfide in prepared by a conventional fusion procedure in the form of \r\nrock samples.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82587","usgsCitation":"Mossotti, V., and King, B., 1982, The determination of total volatiles in rocks by loss-on-fusion: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-587, 23 p., ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82587.","productDescription":"23 p., ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145652,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0587/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38278,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0587/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa9e4b07f02db6687ee","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mossotti, V.G.","contributorId":43785,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mossotti","given":"V.G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161358,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"King, B.","contributorId":78750,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"King","given":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161359,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Using these at-a-station relations as a base, regional relations were then developed that characterize hydraulic features of streams throughout the study area. Channel size is an indication of flow magnitude. High flows affect channel formation, and the annual peak-flow array is a representation of these flows. The geometric mean of this array is a viable statistical index of channel-forming flows because it represents the relative magnitude of high flows at a site. Bankfull discharge is a physical index of flows dominating channel formation. The magnitude of the geometric mean approximately equates to bankfull discharge, on the average. Relations depicting hydraulic characteristics of a discharge equal to the geometric mean of annual peak flows may, therefore, be considered to be generally representative of channel conditions existing during bankfull discharge. The relations have application for predicting channel response to developments that would alter streamflow. The system consists of three programs: FILER, TRAVERSER, and PLOTTER. A control point is a shot point with velocity analysis or a shot point at or near a well with velocity check-shot survey. Reflection time to and code number of seismic horizons are filed by digitizing tablet from record sections. TRAVERSER starts at a point of geologic control and, in traversing to another, parallels seismic events, records loss of horizons by onlap and truncation, and stores reflection time for geologic horizons at traversed shot points. TRAVERSER is basically a phantoming procedure. \r\n\r\nPermafrost thickness and velocity variations, buried canyons with low-velocity fill, and error in seismically derived velocity cause velocity anomalies that complicate depth mapping. Two depths to the top of the pebble is based shale are computed for each control point. One depth, designated Zs on seismically derived velocity. The other (Zw) is based on interval velocity interpolated linearly between wells and multiplied by interval time (isochron) to give interval thickness. Z w is computed for all geologic horizons by downward summation of interval thickness. \r\n\r\nUnknown true depth (Z) to the pebble shale may be expressed as\r\n\r\nZ = Zs + es and Z = Zw + ew\r\n\r\nwhere the e terms represent error. Equating the two expressions gives the depth difference \r\n\r\nD = Zs + Zw = ew + es\r\n\r\nA plot of D for the top of the pebble shale is readily contourable but smoothing is required to produce a reasonably simple surface. \r\n\r\nSeismically derived velocity used in computing Zs includes the effect of velocity anomalies but is subject to some large randomly distributed errors resulting in depth errors (es). Well-derived velocity used in computing Zw does not include the effect of velocity anomalies, but the error (ew) should reflect these anomalies and should be contourable (non-random). The D surface as contoured with smoothing is assumed to represent ew, that is, the depth effect of variations in permafrost thickness and velocity and buried canyon depth. \r\n\r\nEstimated depth (Zest) to each geologic horizon is the sum of Z w for that horizon and a constant e w as contoured for the pebble shale, which is the first highly continuous seismic horizon below the zone of anomalous velocity. Results of this 'depthing' procedure are compared with those of Tetra Tech, Inc., the subcontractor responsible for geologic and geophysical interpretation and mapping.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr821054","usgsCitation":"Payne, T.G., 1982, Use of microcomputer in mapping depth of stratigraphic horizons in National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-1054, ii, 42 p. ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr821054.","productDescription":"ii, 42 p. ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144042,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1054/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38467,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1054/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49d5e4b07f02db5ddeb7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Payne, Thomas G.","contributorId":60653,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Payne","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":161716,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
