Three diamond drill holes intersected base-metal sulfides, which are present both as conformable layers in Precambrian tuffaceous volcanic rocks and as fracture fillings, irregularly shaped masses, disseminations, and clots in intensely hydrothermally altered and brecciated fault zones. The sulfides probably formed through volcanic processes in a shallow-marine environment and subsequently were greatly modified by tectonism and hydrothermal activity. \r\n\r\nDrill hole F.G.-1 intersected sparse base and precious metal minerals along a length of 30 m; several narrow, isolated zones contain as much as 22 grams per metric ton (g/t) silver, 1.25 percent copper, and 3.10 percent zinc. Drill hole F.G.-2 intersected low-grade base and precious metal minerals along a length of 50 m. Within this zone, a 10-m interval contains an average of 0.15 g/t gold, 10.7 g/t silver, and 0.86 percent zinc. Drill hole F.G.-3 cut commercial-grade base and precious metal minerals in a 3.55-m interval that contains an average of 20.06 g/t gold, 32.75 g/t silver, and 6.28 percent zinc. \r\n\r\nAdditional exploration, including drilling and laboratory studies, is recommended to further define potential tonnages of base and precious metals intersected in drill hole F.G.-3 and to learn more about their genesis and mineral form. \r\n\r\nArsenic and antimony are locally abundant in both drillcore and surface samples. Because of its weathering characteristics, mobility, and association with precious metals, arsenic commonly is a pathfinder for gold. Approximately 1,100 splits of surface samples collected in the Farah Garan area are stored at the Directorate General of Mineral Resources-U. S. Geological Survey chemical laboratory in Jiddah, and any further exploration should include assaying these samples for arsenic and antimony by wet-chemical analysis ?","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82942","usgsCitation":"Smith, C.W., and Mawad, M.M., 1982, Drilling results at the Farah Garan ancient mine, southwestern Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-942, iii, 47 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82942.","productDescription":"iii, 47 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144477,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0942/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38969,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0942/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38970,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0942/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38971,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0942/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":38972,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0942/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a5ee4b07f02db633e10","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, Charles W.","contributorId":41431,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162727,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Mawad, Mustafa M.","contributorId":43779,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mawad","given":"Mustafa","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162728,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

No adverse indicators were found for nuclear waste repository siting south of Indian Creek, but additional soundings should be made to increase data density and to extend the survey area southward. The Lockhart fault system appears to have triggered salt dissolution or flow outside the limits of Lockhart Basin; further geophysical work and drilling will be required to understand the origin of the Lockhart Basin structure and its present state of activity. This problem is important because geologic processes that lead to enlargement of the Lockhart Basin structure or to development of similar structures would threaten the integrity of a repository in the Gibson Dome area.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82704","usgsCitation":"Watts, R., 1982, Interpretation of Schlumberger DC resistivity data from Gibson Dome-Lockhart Basin study area, San Juan County, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-704, 21 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82704.","productDescription":"21 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145911,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0704/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39453,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0704/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa7e4b07f02db667072","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Watts, R.D.","contributorId":94666,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Watts","given":"R.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163412,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Information required for the program's operation is: aquifer elevation, thickness, and ground-water density. Included in the report is a computer program for calculating ground-water density from aquifer depth, temperature, and dissolved solids concentration. Factors that are taken into account in the calculation are: aquifer thickness, ground-water viscosity and its dependence on temperature and dissolved solids, and permeability and its dependence on overburden pressure. Other factors affecting ground-water flow are indicated. With small changes in the program code, leakance also could be calculated. The purpose of these calculations is to provide a physical basis for efficient calibration, and to extend rational transmissivity trends into areas where model calibration is insensitive to transmissivity values.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82447","usgsCitation":"Weiss, E., 1982, A computer program for calculating relative-transmissivity input arrays to aid model calibration: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-447, iv, 22 p., ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82447.","productDescription":"iv, 22 p., ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145284,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0447/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39477,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0447/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b27e4b07f02db6b09cb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Weiss, Emanuel","contributorId":74383,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Weiss","given":"Emanuel","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163452,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Jabal Mahanid group of ancient gold mines, which is part of the Jabal Ishmas-Wadi Tathlith gold belt, is in the west-central part of the area. Rocks in the Jabal Riah area consist of Precambrian layered metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks intruded by Precambrian igneous rocks. The metamorphic rocks are, from oldest to youngest, interlayered hornblende and biotite schist, quartz-biotite schist, hornblende schist, serpentinite, and chlorite schist. The igneous rocks are, from oldest to youngest, diorite-gabbro including dikes, granodiorite, monzogranite-granodiorite, leucocratic quartz porphyry, rhyolite, and aplite and pegmatite dikes. A large area of jasper replaces serpentinite. On the valley floors, recent alluvium and pediment deposits overlie the bedrock. \r\n\r\nThe structure of the area is dominated by a dome centered over the eastern border of the area; leucocratic quartz porphyry forms the core of the dome. Minor folds and faults are present. \r\n\r\nThe Jabal Mahanid group of ancient gold mines is on a northwest-trending vein system, and major ancient mine areas are found where the system splits or changes direction. The veins consist of zones of brecciated and crushed rock, which are generally less than 0.5 m wide but may be as wide as 1 m. These zones contain quartz and calcite stringers and commonly are along hornblende schist-serpentinite contacts; however, they also cut both units. Most aplite, pegmatite, and quartz dikes in the area are thin and discontinuous and are intruded along the vein trend. Similar veins, at the same stratigraphic interval, have been found beyond the northeastern part of the map area. The veins contain detectable gold and silver (median gold, approximately 0.14 ppm; median silver, approximately 1 ppm). Gold and silver are most abundant in calcium-rich rocks and veins; silver was not detected in igneous rocks. Altered wall-rock zones are mineralized as much as 10 m away from the veins. \r\n\r\nAway from the Jabal Mahanid vein-system, silver was detected in the jasper. Gold and silver were detected in minor brecciated and sheared structures and in metasedimentary rocks. Gold was detected in sericitized margins of the leucocratic quartz porphyry, in unaltered rhyolite, and in aplite dikes. \r\n\r\nThe presence of unusual amounts of gold and silver over a wide area is indicated by the ancient gold mines along veins at or near the hornblende schist-serpentinite contact in the map area and to the south in the Hajrah-Hamdah area and by the widespread evidence of precious metals in igneous rocks and other vein structures. A domed-shaped area, approximately 30 km in diameter, is outlined by the hornblende schist-serpentinite contact and has leucocratic quartz prophyry in the middle. Additional study of this area might reveal economic concentrations of gold and silver.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr821049","usgsCitation":"Wells, J.D., 1982, Geology of the Jabal Riah area, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-1049, 25 p., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr821049.","productDescription":"25 p., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":145456,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1049/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39484,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1049/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39485,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1049/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":39486,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1049/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c1ef","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wells, J. The monchiquites and limburgite turfs erupted from the diatremes are distinguished from normal alkalic basalts of the Colorado Plateau by their extreme silica undersaturation and high water, TiO2, and P2O5 contents. Many trace elements are also unusually abundant, including Ag, As, Ba, Be, Ce, Dy, Eu, F, Gd, Hf, La, Nd, Pb, Rb, Se, Sm, Sn, Sr, Ta, Tb, Th, U, V, Zn, and Zr. \r\n\r\nThe lacustrine sediments, which consist predominantly of travertine and clastic rocks, are the hosts for syngenetic and epigenetic uranium mineralization of as much as 1500 ppm uranium. Fission track maps show the uranium to be disseminated within the travertine and clastic rocks, and although microprobe analyses have not, as yet, revealed discrete uranium-bearing phases, the clastic rocks show a correlation of high Fe, Ti, and P with areas of high U. Correlation coefficients show that for the travertines, clastics, and limburgite ruffs, Mo, As, Sr, Co, and V appear to have the most consistent and strongest correlations with uranium. Many elements, including many of the rare-earth elements, that are high in these three rocks are also high in the monchiquites, as compared to the average crustal abundance for the respective rock type. This similar suite of anomalous elements, which includes such immobile elements as the rare earths, suggests that Fluids which deposited the travertines were related to the monchiquitic magma. The similar age of about 5 m.y. for both the lake beds and the monchiquites also appears to support this source for the mineralizing fluids.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82740","usgsCitation":"Wenrich, K., and Mascarenas, J., 1982, Diatremes of the Hopi Buttes, Arizona; chemical and statistical analyses: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-740, iv, 131 p., ill. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82740.","productDescription":"iv, 131 p., ill. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":143780,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0740/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39490,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0740/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9ae4b07f02db65dac8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wenrich, K. As a result of that program, a technique is presented for estimating the magnitude and frequency of floods on small streams in South Carolina with drainage areas ranging in size from 1 to 500 square miles. Peak-discharge data from 74 stream-gaging stations (25 small streams were synthesized, whereas 49 stations had long-term records) were used in multiple regression procedures to obtain equations for estimating magnitude of floods having recurrence intervals of 10, 25, 50, and 100 years on small natural streams. The significant independent variable was drainage area. Equations were developed for the three physiographic provinces of South Carolina (Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and Blue Ridge) and can be used for estimating floods on small streams. Time trend analyses indicate an increase in specific conductance (dissolved solids), hardness, and alkalinity over the past 20 years in the lower American River near Sacramento downstream from treated effluent and urban runoff sources. Most violations of specific water quality objectives for the basin have occurred in this segment. Water-quality conditions in the segment are expected to improve in 1982 when sewage treatment facility discharges will be discontinued. Potential water-quality problems in the upper American River basin could result from recreational overuse, improper land-use or poorly managed mining operations. Recreational overuse and increased urban runoff are the principal threats to water quality in the lower American River. Proposed monitoring activities include low-flow investigations on the lower American to measure diurnal variations in water-quality characteristics and studies in the uppper basin to determine the impact of increasing recreation and development as well as the effects of mine discharge. Its stratigraphic position above eolian sand and below a large barchanoid dune indicates deposition during an exceptional period of pluvial climate in an otherwise arid sand desert. Radiocarbon-dated carbonate lake beds found in similar stratigraphic settings in other parts of the Nafud suggest that the diatomite was deposited in the late Pleistocene epoch sometime between 32,000 and 20,000 years ago. Diatomite of the same pluvial episode has also been found in the Afar region of Ethiopia. \r\n\r\nFour samples of the diatomite were analyzed for major chemical components and 32 minor and trace elements. Two of the samples appeared to be representative of the lake bed. These samples contained about 85 percent SiO2, 2.34 percent Fe2O3, 1 4 percent Al2O3, and 8.27 percent ignition loss, with only traces of CaO, P2O5, MgO, Na2O, and TiO2. The high content of silica and low contents of alumina, iron oxide, lime, and other constituents indicate low contamination. Analyses of samples from the two atypical units indicate a small amount of contamination, probably clay or mica, in the basal unit and addition of iron oxide and carbonate by ground water in an isolated green-colored unit. Chemically the Bi'r Hayzan diatomite compares favorably with commercial deposits from other parts of the world. Low bulk densities of 0.64 g/cm3 (30-40 lbs/ft3) and an average porosity of 63 percent for five samples also suggest the deposit is of industrial grade. \r\n\r\nFurther studies are recommended to determine: (1) the size and extent of the deposit and (2) the suitability of the diatomite for commercial applications. As means to these ends, electrical-resistivity surveys following winter rains are suggested to determine both the extent and thickness of the lake bed beneath the overlying sand dunes. A complete species identification of the diatom association and further laboratory testing of physical properties of the diatomite also should be made. Further exploration in the Nafud is recommended to locate other possible diatomite deposits.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr821046","usgsCitation":"Whitney, J., and Gettings, M.E., 1982, Preliminary geological investigation of the Bir Hayzan diatomite deposit, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with a section on selected physical properties and implications for future geophysical exploration: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-1046, 27 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr821046.","productDescription":"27 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":144764,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1046/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":39512,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1046/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abde4b07f02db673b91","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Whitney, J.W.","contributorId":27437,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Whitney","given":"J.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":163520,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gettings, M. The Minjur was modeled as a confined aquifer recharged by leakage through underlying confining beds. Pumpage was simulated for a 23-year period during which it increased from 2,160 to 220 ,000 cubic meters per day. At Riyadh, the top of the Minjur aquifer is about 1200 meters below land surface. Aquifer thickness within the 40,000-square-kilometer study area ranges from 74 to 138 meters inclusively. Values for aquifer characteristics used in the model are: transmissivity, from 0.001 to 0.0062 square meters per second; storage coefficients, 0.07 for the unconfined, and 0.0004 for the confined sectors of the model area. A value of 0.02 meters per second was used to represent the vertical conductivity of the confining bed. Predictive simulations indicate that if the Minjur aquifer in the Riyadh area is stressed by estimated future pumpages, static water-level declines ranging from 10 up to and including 90 meters, depending on location, will occur from 1980 through 1999. Simulations also demonstrated that pumping levels in the new Buwayb well field will decline substantially from 1980 through 1981.
