Among fish with 'otolith ages' of 4 or more, the percentages having identical 'scale ages' were 1% in Lake Ontario, 35% in Lake Huron, and 56% in Lake Michigan. Among alewives with different otolith and scale ages, the percentages with discrepancies of 3 years or more were 51% in Lake Ontario, 23% in Lake Huron, and 6% in Lake Michigan. Among the three populations, variation in the magnitude of age disagreements were perhaps due to the different mortality rates in each lake, whereas variation in the frequency of disagreements appeared to be due to different ratios of food to fish in each lake. Previously reported age compositions and rates of mortality and production for Great Lakes alewives derived from scales have probably been inaccurate to various degrees.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Age and growth of fish","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Iowa State University Press","publisherLocation":"Ames, IA","usgsCitation":"O’Gorman, R., Barwick, D.H., and Bowen, C., 1987, Discrepancies between ages determined from scales and otoliths for alewives from the Great Lakes, chap. <i>of</i> Age and growth of fish, p. 203-210.","productDescription":"p. 203-210","startPage":"203","endPage":"210","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":126957,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a81e4b07f02db64a93a","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Summerfelt, R.D.","contributorId":113743,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Summerfelt","given":"R.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504080,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hall, G.E.","contributorId":113030,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hall","given":"G.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":504079,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"O’Gorman, Robert rogorman@usgs.gov","contributorId":3451,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"O’Gorman","given":"Robert","email":"rogorman@usgs.gov","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":295352,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Barwick, D. Overall, NASA's 'SFAS' models and the BGS (British Geological Survey) models agree best with these data. Comparisons of the two proposed definitive main-field models for 1980.0, with each other and with the existing IGRF 1980 main-field model, show mostly close agreement, with the greatest absolute differences (several tens of nanotesla) occurring in the region of Antarctica. Comparison of the the three proposed forecast secular-variation models for 1985-1990 with estimates of recent rates of change at 148 magnetic observatories shows that the IZMIRAN (U.S.S.R.) and USGS models are in closest agreement with these data. ?? 1987.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","publisherLocation":"Amsterdam, Netherlands","doi":"10.1016/0031-9201(87)90156-7","issn":"00319201","usgsCitation":"Peddie, N., and Zunde, A., 1987, Assessment of models proposed for the 1985 revision of the international geomagnetic reference field: Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, v. 48, no. 3-4, p. 330-337, https://doi.org/10.1016/0031-9201(87)90156-7.","startPage":"330","endPage":"337","numberOfPages":"8","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":267334,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/0031-9201(87)90156-7"},{"id":225819,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"48","issue":"3-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059ee41e4b0c8380cd49c61","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Peddie, N.W.","contributorId":75911,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peddie","given":"N.W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":367856,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Zunde, A.K.","contributorId":21946,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Zunde","given":"A.K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":367855,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Of the size fractions investigated (&lt;2, &lt;16, &lt;63and&lt;125 μm), the strongest correlation with trace elements occurs with the percent &lt;63 μm or&lt;125 μm fractions. As the proportion of these size fractions increases in the samples, so do the trace element concentrations. When surface area (as defined by nitrogen adsorption and the BET equations) increases, trace element levels also increase. Correlations between bulk sediment chemistry and surface area are as strong as those between sediment chemistry and the proportion of the &lt;63or&lt;125 μm fractions. Surface area appears to serve as a proxy for grain size. The strongest correlations between grain size and surface area are the same as for trace elements and grain size (with the &lt;63or&lt;125 μm fractions). Surface area also is affected by geochemical phase, as are the trace elements associated with sediments. Of the phases considered (carbonates, Mn oxides, reactive Fe, amorphous Fe, organic matter), amorphous Fe oxides appear to exert the greatest control over both surface area and trace element levels. The concentrations of various geochemical phases affect surface area, grain size, and trace element chemistry. However, the effect of phase is grain-size dependent. For material with mean grain sizes in the fine sand range and coarser (&gt; 125 μm), each of the various phases contribute to overall sample surface area. For material having mean grain sizes in the very fine sand range and finer (&lt;125 μm), the same phases act as surface-area inhibitors by cementing fine grains together to form aggregates. This increases the mean grain size of the sample and reduces the surface area. The presence of these aggregates may explain why the &lt;63 μm or&lt;125 μm size fractions are more important to sediment-trace element levels and surface area than other finer fractions.</p></div></div></div>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0883-2927(87)90027-8","issn":"08832927","usgsCitation":"Horowitz, A.J., and Elrick, K.A., 1987, The relation of stream sediment surface area, grain size and composition to trace element chemistry: Applied Geochemistry, v. 2, no. 4, p. 437-451, https://doi.org/10.1016/0883-2927(87)90027-8.","productDescription":"15 p.","startPage":"437","endPage":"451","numberOfPages":"15","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":223863,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"2","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505baf0fe4b08c986b32450f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Horowitz, A. In the upper Pololu Volcanics the lavas become more enriched in incompatible elements, and there is a transition from tholeiitic to alkalic basalt. In contrast, the Hawi volcanics consist of hawaiites, mugearites, and trachytes. 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 14 Pololu basalts and 5 Hawi lavas range from 0.70366 to 0.70392 and 0.70350 to 0.70355, respectively. This small but distinct difference in Sr isotopic composition of different lava types, especially the lower 87Sr/86Sr in the younger lavas with higher Rb/Sr, has been found at other Hawaiian volcanoes. Our data do not confirm previous data indicating Sr isotopic homogeneity among lavas from Kohala Volcano. Also some abundance trends, such as MgO-P2O5, are not consistent with a simple genetic relationship between Pololu and Hawi lavas. For problems where soil-water phase change latent heat effects dominate the thermal regime, heat transport can be approximately modeled as a time-stepped steady-state condition in the thawed and frozen regions, respectively. The CVBEM provides an exact solution of the two-dimensional steady-state heat transport problem, and also provides the error in matching the prescribed boundary conditions by the development of a modeling error distribution or an approximate boundary generation. CL techniques are especially useful for determining the origin and source of quartz and feldspar, two of the most common constituents in clastic rocks. CL properties of both minerals are dependent on their temperature of crystallization, duration of cooling, and/or history of deformation. Detrital quartz and feldspar are typically derived from igneous and metamorphic sources and luminesce in the visible range whereas authigenic quartz and feldspar form at low temperatures and do not luminesce. Quantification of luminescent and non-luminescent quartz and feldspar with the scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe, or a commercial CL device can allow for the determination of origin, diagenesis, and source of clastic rocks when used in conjunction with field and other petrographic analyses.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Scanning Micros","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"08917035","usgsCitation":"Ruppert, L.F., 1987, APPLICATIONS OF CATHODOLUMINESCENCE OF QUARTZ AND FELDSPAR TO SEDIMENTARY PETROLOGY.: Scanning Micros, v. 1, no. 1, p. 63-72.","startPage":"63","endPage":"72","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":223859,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"1","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059e631e4b0c8380cd4722f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ruppert, Leslie F. 0000-0002-7453-1061 lruppert@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-7453-1061","contributorId":660,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ruppert","given":"Leslie","email":"lruppert@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[{"id":245,"text":"Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":241,"text":"Eastern Energy Resources Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":370212,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

After an initial theoretical discussion, the results of a set of numerical experiments are presented that demonstrate cause-and-effect relationships and intercomparisons achieved by neglect or improper treatment of important nonhomogeneous terms. The main purpose of the management model was to find the optimal locations and minimum rates of pumpage of a set of plume-interception wells, to successfully reverse the velocity vectors at observation wells located along the plume front, and also to satisfy freshwater demands from supply wells. The effects of the calculated minimum withdrawals from the interception wells on the migration of contaminants throughout the ground-water system were evaluated utilizing a solute-transport model. This latter analysis was carried out to ensure the containment of the plume. Whereas application of the management model to the study area achieves the management objectives, the implementation of the results is believed to be impractical and expensive.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Water Resources Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"00431370","usgsCitation":"Heidari, M., Sadeghipour, J., and Drici, O., 1987, Velocity control as a tool for optimal plume containment in the Equus Beds aquifer, Kansas: Water Resources Bulletin, v. 23, no. 2, p. 325-335.","startPage":"325","endPage":"335","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":224290,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"23","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bc1f6e4b08c986b32a858","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Heidari, M.","contributorId":26430,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Heidari","given":"M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370137,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Sadeghipour, J.","contributorId":83277,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sadeghipour","given":"J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370138,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Drici, O.","contributorId":90886,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Drici","given":"O.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370139,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
