This report contains hydrologic data collected in an active coal mining area in Clay and Vigo Counties, Indiana, from September 1977 through February 1980. Methods of sampling and analysis used in collecting the data also are summarized. The data include field and laboratory measurements of water at 41 wells and 24 stream sites. Variables measured in the field include water temperature, specific conductance, pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, ground-water levels, and streamflow; and in the laboratory, concentrations of major ions, alkalinity, hardness, trace elementsl, organic carbon, phosphorus, and dissolved solids. Other variables measured in the laboratory include ferrous iron concentration of water samples from selected wells, percent sulfur by weight and the potential acidity of core samples of reclaimed cast overburden, concentrations of elements absorbed on streambed materials, concentrations and particle size of suspended sediment in water, and populations and Shannon diversity indices of phytoplankton in water. These reserves are recoverable from 445 studied fields under the Federal submerged lands off the coasts of Louisiana and Texas. An additional 44 fields, discovered since December 31, 1979, have not been sufficiently developed to permit a reasonably accurate estimate of reserves.</p><p>Original recoverable reserves are estimated to have been 8.17 billion barrels of oil and 93.4 trillion cubic feet of gas from 461 fields in the same geographic area. Included in this number are 16 fields that are depleted and were abandoned; not included are the 44 insufficiently developed fields. Multiple regression analyses were used to define the relation between flood discharge and basin and climatic variables. The analyses indicated that flood discharge is related to the drainage area and physiographic location of the basin. Accordingly, equations were developed for the Lower Coastal Plain, Inner Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and Blue Ridge provinces. The standard errors of estimate range from 31 to 56 percent. Station data used in the analyses are listed in the report. </p><p>Individual relations of flood discharge and frequency to drainage area are given for some of the regulated major streams, including the Pee Dee, Catawba, Wateree, Broad, Saluda, Congaree, Santee, and Savannah Rivers. Storm tide-recurrence interval relations along the South Carolina coast indicate that the 500-year tide height can exceed 19 feet, National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929, at some locations. </p><p>A The a'a flow upon which the observatory is constructed represents a flow of reasonable magnitude. \r\n\r\nProper construction of the barriers includes obtaining riprap from a zone exterior to the proposed V-shaped barrier so as to produce an exterior relief near 9.2 m for most of the barrier, construction of a channel about 8 m deep and 40 m wide along the east part of the barrier, and proper positioning of an isolated initiating barrier. \r\n\r\nCalculations suggest that the barriers should be able to handle peak volume flow rates near 800 m/s and possibly larger ones. This approach has the advantages of procedural simplicity and ready availability of input data; consequently, it has potential utility as a screening tool in the early stages of the reservoir planning process.</p><p>Habitat suitability is determined on the basis of a composite score for five \"primary\" reservoir attributes (temperature, turbidity, nonliving cover, drawdown, and shallow cove frequency). The va 1ue of each primary reservoi r attribute is determined from one or more \"secondary\" attributes, which are easily measured variables. Secondary attributes (for example, length of growing season or mean July air temperature) can be directly obtained, prior to construction, from published documents, maps, reservoir plans, and on-site inspections of the proposed reservoir basin.</p><p>Evaluation criteria and ratings are presented for rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri), white sucker (Catostomus commersonii), yellow perch (Perca flavescens), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), and black crappie (PomoxTS nigromaculatus). These ratings were derived from literature reviews and from persona 1 experi ence and knowl edge of the authors; however, the system is easily adaptable to change upon further review, differences of opinion by experts, or evaluation of test results under diverse conditions.</p><p>This technique can be used to evaluate the suitability of a proposed reservoir for different species and to compare the outcomes of alternative construction plans. It could also be expanded to include additional species, which will improve its utility. The second area, in the Targhee National Forest, consists of some 38,750 acres (15,682 ha) within Idaho.
