The amount of data analyzed at each site varies from the complete daily discharge record for continuous-record gaging stations, some of which have been in operation for over 50 years, to limited discharge measurements for partial-record sites. Daily discharges for continuous-record stations with 7 or more years of record were analyzed by digital computer. From these computer summaries, low-flow frequency tables for all gaging stations on unregulated streams with 10 or more years of record were tabulated. Flow-duration tables were also compiled for streams with at least 7 years of streamflow records. For continuous-record gaging stations with less than 10 years of record, for highly regulated streams, and for partial-record sites, only observed or estimated annual minimum mean discharges for 7 consecutive days with recurrence intervals of 2 and 10 years are given. The modeled space was divided into seven layers of square prisms that were 6 miles on a side in the horizontal directions. In the vertical direction, the layers of prisms ranged in thickness from 300 to 1,500 feet. The model included the geologic section between the base of the Entrada Sandstone and the top of Mesaverde Group. Principal aquifers in this section are mostly confined and include the Entrada Sandstone, the Westwater Canyon Member of the Morrison Formation , and the Gallup Sandstone. Values for vertical hydraulic conductivities from 10 to the minus 12th power to 10 to the minus 11th power feet per second for the confining layers gave a good simulation of head differences between layers, but a sensitivity analysis indicated that these values could be between 10 and 100 times greater. The model-derived steady-state flow was about 30 cubic feet per second. About one-half of the flow was in the San Juan River drainage basin about one-third in the Rio Grande drainage basin, and one-sixth in the Puerco River drainage basin. They are folded into a large southwestward-plunging anticline that is cut off on the east and south by an extensive thrust fault that brings old basement rocks over the younger sedimentary rocks. Geochemical studies of stream sediments, soils, and rocks do not reveal any unusually high metal concentrations, but a large resource of metallurgical-grade quartzite and shale suitable for structural clay products and lightweight aggregate is in the wilderness. Antietam (Erwin) Quartzite has been quarried at three sites in the wilderness as raw material for silicon used in the manufacture of ferrosilicon. Other uses included crushed rock for concrete aggregate, road metal, and railroad ballast, and sand for cement and mortar. Potential uses include ganister for silica brick and specialty sands such as filter and furnace sand. Firing tests on samples of shale from the Harpers (Hampton) Formation show that it could be used for the manufacture of brick and as lightweight aggregate. Data from Calico Hills and Wahmonie are generally high in quality; data from Yucca Mountain are for the most part low in quality. At Calico Hills and Wahmonie, special attention was focused on the possible occurrence of a major intrusive body at depth. At Calico Hills this occurrence is supported by an inferred dome-shaped velocity interface. possibly associated with the roof of an altered phase of argillite. However, if an intrusive body is present, its top must be buried deeper than 3 km or it must be so pervasively altered that its velocity is similar to that of the calcareous argillite encountered at the bottom of drill hole DE 25a-3. At Wahmonie, the seismic data suggest the occurrence of a massive lenticular unit within 60 m of the ground surface, probably consisting of argillite but possibly consisting of intensively altered intrusive rock.\r\n\r\nAt Yucca Mountain, preliminary interpretations of the most reliable data suggest the occurrence of a major, steeply inclined velocity interface 500 m from the southwest end of the Yucca C spread. This interface may represent a major fault or erosional feature separating the Topopah Spring and Tiva Canyon Members with Paintbrush Tuff at depth. This interface is 800 m east of a previously mapped fault. On the basis of poor-quality data obtained at Yucca Mountain, the subsurface velocity distribution appears to be complex. For example, one spread near drill hole UE25 a-I suggests not only a much thicker section of Tiva but also that this material is down thrown in the valley. Existing data on water levels, well construction, and water quality were compiled, and a limited program of water-level measurement and water-quality sampling was conducted during 1976-77 to provide documentation of current hydrologic conditions against which effects of future development may be measured.<br></p><p>Water-level measurements show the presence of small independent aquifers near the periphery of the alluvial fan covering the study area and a main alluvial aquifer in which water levels fluctuate in direct response to annual changes in lake stage.</p><p>The sampled ground water can be grouped into four chemical types--three based on the relative proportions of sulfate and bicarbonate and one based on an increased proportion of chloride plus nitrate.</p><p>Frequency distributions of the observed occurrences of nitrate (as NO3), phosphate (as PO4), and chloride in ground water indicate thresholds for background concentrations of these constituents at 0 to 3, 0 to 0.35, and 0 to 6 milligrams per liter, respectively. Above-background concentrations of nitrate and phosphate in ground water may be attributable, in part, to natural sources of these constituents; however, septic-tank effluents have increased the concentrations of nitrate, chloride, and perhaps phosphate in at least two areas of the current development. It provided State and local governments with current information about OCS oil and gas resources and related offshore and onshore activities in the North Atlantic Region, from New Jersey to Maine. The report was intended to assist in the planning for the onshore impacts of OCS activities in the North Atlantic States. Updates to summary reports are published approximately every 6 months in order to provide supplemental information to the summary reports.
