The displacements occurred prior to any significant aftershocks on either fault and thus are classed as sympathetic. Although the main shock was located in an exceptionally seismogenic part of Imperial Valley, about 20 km distant from either fault, no clear evidence of surface faulting has yet been found in the epicentral area. Horizontal displacement on the Imperial and Superstition Hills faults, southeast and southwest of the epicenter, respectively, reached maxima of 8 mm and 14 mm, and the discontinuous surface ruptures formed along approximately equal lengths of northern segments of the two structures (16.8 km and 15.7 km, respectively). The maximum vertical component of slip on the Imperial fault, 6 ram, was observed 3.4 km north of the point of largest horizontal slip. Vertical movement on the Superstition Hills fault was less than 1 mm. No new displacement was found along the traces of the Brawley fault zone, the San Andreas fault, or the part of the Coyote Creek fault that slipped during the 1968 Borrego Mountain earthquake. A careful search in the epicentral area of the main shock failed to locate any definite evidence of surface faulting. Concentrations of late aftershocks north and northeast of Calipatria near the southeastward projection of the San Andreas fault occurred mostly after our field check; this area was not investigated.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82282","usgsCitation":"Sharp, R.V., Lienkaemper, J.J., and Rymer, M.J., 1982, Surface displacement on the Imperial and Superstition Hills faults triggered by the Westmorland, California, earthquake of 26 April 1981: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-282, 37 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82282.","productDescription":"37 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":412049,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_75629.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":38877,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0282/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143628,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0282/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Imperial and Superstition Hills faults","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -115.83126556491355,\n              33.126411297926936\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.83126556491355,\n              32.758080537034004\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.41947560542245,\n              32.758080537034004\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.41947560542245,\n              33.126411297926936\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.83126556491355,\n              33.126411297926936\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afee4b07f02db697293","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sharp, R. The holes were drilled during July, August, and September 1979 to obtain geologic and hydrologic data to better define the regional ground-water-flow system. The geologic data presented in this report are part of a site-characterization study for the possible storage of defense-associated radioactive wastes within salt beds of the Salado Formation of Permian age. The geologic data include detailed descriptions of cores, cuttings, and geophysical logs. Each borehole was designed to penetrate a distinct water-bearing zone: H-9a (total depth 559 feet) was completed just below the Magenta Dolomite Member of the Rustler Formation; H-9b (total depth 708 feet) was completed just below the Culebra Dolomite Member of the Rustler Formation; H-9c (total depth 816 feet) was completed below the Rustler Formation-Salado Formation contact. The geologic units penetrated in borehole H-9c are eolian sand of Holocene age (0-5 feet); the Gatuna Formation of Pleistocene age; (5-25 feet); and the Dewey Lake Red Beds (25-455 feet), the Rustler Formation (455.791 feet), and part of the Salado Formation (791-816 feet), all of Permian age. Three sections (494-501 feet, 615-625 feet, 692-712 feet) in the Rustler Formation penetrated by borehole H-9c are composed of remnant anhydrite (locally altered to gypsum) and clay and silt residue from the dissolution of much thicker seams of argillaceous and silty halite. This indicates that the eastward-moving dissolution within the Rustler Formation, found just to the west of the WIPP site, is present at the H-9 site. Ten are in areas hydraulically connected with the master stream and have a shallow water table, the 11th is a buried valley system on the Lake Ontario Plain. In all systems, till, lake silt and clay, and bedrock knobs are interspersed within sand and gravel. Confining conditions occur locally in all systems and are extensive in some. Each area is partly urbanized, contains industry, and has an extensive transportation network, all of which may be sources of contamination. Well yields for public and industrial supply are commonly several hundred gallons per minute. More than 90 maps depict surficial geology, soil-zone permeability, aquifer dimensions and potential, water levels, and land use; tables of ground-water use, population served, and a summary of contamination potential are also given. Major concern in all areas is the potential for contamination and, in a few areas, adequacy of supply. The areas described are Schenectady, Endicott-Johnson City, Ramapo and Mahwah Rivers, Irondequoit Creek, Jamestown, Elmira-Horseheads-Big Flats, Cortland, Homer-Preble, Sprout and Fishkill Creeks, Fulton, and south Fallsburg-Woodbourne. An area where increases have caused particular concern is in northwestern Colorado, in the southern part of the Yampa River basin. In order to identify the changes produced by mining in the area it is necessary first to identify the water chemistry resulting from the geology, climate, and land use. To answer the above questions, a program for the synoptic collection of water-quality data was developed in which a network of sampling sites was established to determine the surface-water chemistry. \r\n\r\nThis study was begun in April 1981. Water-quality samples were collected from sites on all continuously flowing streams in the southern part of the Yampa River basin from the Oak Creek drainage near Steamboat Springs on the east to the surface-water gaging station on the Yampa River near Maybell on the west. Each water-quality site was sampled repetitively as changes occurred in discharge and specific conductance. Water-quality data from surface-water gaging stations in the area for water years 1976 to 1981 are included in the report.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey :\r\nOpen-File Services Section, Western Distribution Branch [distributor],","doi":"10.3133/ofr821017","usgsCitation":"Maura, W.S., 1982, Water-quality data for streams in the southern Yampa River basin, northwestern Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-1017, iv, 116 p. :map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr821017.","productDescription":"iv, 116 p. :map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":110123,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_33660.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"33660"},{"id":152502,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1017/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":49537,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1017/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49538,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1017/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4888e4b07f02db51ad70","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Maura, Wendy S.","contributorId":9673,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Maura","given":"Wendy","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":181892,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Statistical analysis techniques are applicable to both these problems and include techniques for sampling the data and determining their accuracy. In addition, techniques for hypothesis testing, or inferential statistics, are used when comparing the effects of variables. A comprehensive and valid accuracy test of a classification project, such as thematic mapping from remotely sensed data, includes the following components of statistical analysis: (1) sample design, including the sample distribution, sample size, size of the sample unit, and sampling procedure; and (2) accuracy estimation, including estimation of the variance and confidence limits. Careful consideration must be given to the minimum sample size necessary to validate the accuracy of a given. classification category. \r\n\r\nThe results of an accuracy test are presented in a contingency table sometimes called a classification error matrix. Usually the rows represent the interpretation, and the columns represent the verification. The diagonal elements represent the correct classifications. The remaining elements of the rows represent errors by commission, and the remaining elements of the columns represent the errors of omission. For tests of hypothesis that compare variables, the general practice has been to use only the diagonal elements from several related classification error matrices. These data are arranged in the form of another contingency table. The columns of the table represent the different variables being compared, such as different scales of mapping. The rows represent the blocking characteristics, such as the various categories of classification. The values in the cells of the tables might be the counts of correct classification or the binomial proportions of these counts divided by either the row totals or the column totals from the original classification error matrices. In hypothesis testing, when the results of tests of multiple sample cases prove to be significant, some form of statistical test must be used to separate any results that differ significantly from the others. In the past, many analyses of the data in this error matrix were made by comparing the relative magnitudes of the percentage of correct classifications, for either individual categories, the entire map or both. More rigorous analyses have used data transformations and (or) two-way classification analysis of variance. A more sophisticated step of data analysis techniques would be to use the entire classification error matrices using the methods of discrete multivariate analysis or of multiviariate analysis of variance.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82239","usgsCitation":"Rosenfield, G., 1982, Analyzing thematic maps and mapping for accuracy: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-239, iii, 20 p. ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82239.","productDescription":"iii, 20 p. ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142415,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0239/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":38683,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0239/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4882e4b07f02db5171bc","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rosenfield, G.H.","contributorId":94670,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rosenfield","given":"G.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":162204,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Indian Run was observed above and below the U.S. Soil Conservation Service Reservoir, VI-D. Little Rush Creek was observed 1.1 miles downstream from the proposed U.S. Soil Conservation Reservoir, VI-A, site. Data from the Indian Run sites were used to predict the potential water-quality conditions in and downstream from the proposed Little Rush Creek Reservoir. \r\n\r\nTemperatures measured in Indian Run at the reservoir outflow were as much as 4oc greater than those at the inflow. Dissolved-oxygen saturation ranged from 62 to 110 percent in the inflow and from 57 to 120 percent in the outflow. Indian Run and Little Push Creek are characterized by moderately hard to very hard calcium bicarbonate water. The concentration of dieldrin in water samples from both Little Rush Creek and the outflow from the reservoir on Indian Run was 0.01 micrograms per liter, and in reservoir-surface samples it was 0.02 micrograms per liter. Chlordane concentration in a bottom material sample from the reservoir was 26 micrograms per kilogram. Catfish taken from the reservoir contained 190 micrograms per kilogram chlordane. \r\n\r\nAll sites showed a good diversity in benthic invertebrate communities. Blue-green algal blooms occurred in the reservoir, indicating nutrient-enriched conditions. \r\n\r\nBecause of similarities in land use and watershed characteristics, water in the proposed reservoir VI-A is expected to be similar in quality to that of reservoir VI-D. The new reservoir will not significantly affect downstream water quality.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82109","usgsCitation":"Hren, J., and Jones, R., 1982, Potential impacts of a proposed reservoir on hydrologic and water-quality conditions in Little Rush Creek watershed, Fairfield County, Ohio: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-109, v, 67 p. :ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82109.","productDescription":"v, 67 p. :ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":142155,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0109/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":37326,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0109/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37327,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0109/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37328,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0109/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37329,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0109/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac8e4b07f02db67c04f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hren, Janet","contributorId":69554,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hren","given":"Janet","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159977,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jones, R.L.","contributorId":39785,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jones","given":"R.L.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159976,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
