The data management system is used to retrieve and combine data from USGS data files for use in rainfall, runoff, and water-quality models and for data computations such as storm loads. The system is based on the data management aspect of the Statistical Analysis System (SAS) and was used to create all the data files in the data base. SAS is used for storage and retrieval of basin physiography, land-use, and environmental practices inventory data. Also, storm-event water-quality characteristics are stored in the data base. The advantages of using SAS to create and manage a data base are many with a few being that it is simple, easy to use, contains a comprehensive statistical package, and can be used to modify files very easily. Data base system development has progressed rapidly during the last two decades and the data managment system concepts used in this study reflect the advancement made in computer technology during this era. Urban stormwater data is, however, just one application for which the system can be used. The bearing and plunge of the maximum and minimum principal stress components are, respectively: N. 56? E., 29? NE; and N. 42? W., 14? NW. The vertical stress magnitude of 7.9 MPa calculated from the overcore data is significantly less than expected from overburden pressure, suggesting the stress field is influenced by local or areal geologic factors. Results from this investigation indicate (1) the stress state at the Spent Fuel Test--Climax site deviates significantly from a gravitational stress field, both in relative stress magnitudes and in orientation; (2) numerical modeling will not realistically simulate the near-field response of the Spent Fuel Test--Climax site if gravitational and (or) horizontal and vertical applied stress boundary conditions are assumed; and (3) substantial stress variations may occur spatially within the stock.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82458","usgsCitation":"Ellis, W., and Magner, J.E., 1982, Determination of in situ state of stress at the Spent Fuel Test-Climax site, Climax Stock, Nevada Test Site: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-458, i, 57 p. ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82458.","productDescription":"i, 57 p. ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141088,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0458/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36312,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0458/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db667709","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ellis, W. Underlying the site in descending order are: (1) low permeability glacial till, (2) a moderately permeable fractured rock aquifer--the Lockport Dolomite, and (3) a low permeability unit--the Rochester Shale. The site is bounded on three sides by ground-water drains; the Niagara River Gorge, the Niagara Power Project canal, and the power project conduits. \r\n\r\nA finite element model was used to simulate ground-water flow along an east-west section through the Hyde Park site (from the power project conduits to the Niagara Gorge). Steady-state conditions were simulated with an average annual recharge rate of 5 inches per year. The calibrated model simulated measured water levels within 5 feet in the glacial till and upper unit of the Lockport Dolomite and approximated the configuration of the water table. \r\n\r\nBased on simulation, ground-water flow near the Hyde Park site can be summarized as follows: \r\n\r\n1. Specific discharge (Darcy velocity) ranges from about 0.01 to 0.1 foot per day in the upper unit of the Lockport Dolomite to less than 0.00001 foot per day in the Rochester Shale. Real velocities are highest in the upper unit of the Lockport, ranging from about 1.5 to 4.8 feet per day. \r\n\r\n2. A ground-water divide exists east of the landfill, indicating that all ground water originating near or flowing beneath the landfill will flow toward and discharge in the gorge. \r\n\r\n3. The zone of highest velocities (and presumably greatest potential for transporting chemical contaminants) includes the upper unit of the Lockport and part of the lower unit of the Lockport Dolomite between the landfill and the gorge. The time required for ground water to move from the landfill to the gorge in the Lockport Dolomite is estimated to be 5 to 7 years.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82159","usgsCitation":"Maslia, M., and Johnston, R., 1982, Simulation of ground-water flow in the vicinity of Hyde Park landfill, Niagara Falls, New York: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-159, v, 19 p., 5 over-size sheets, ill., (some folded) ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82159.","productDescription":"v, 19 p., 5 over-size sheets, ill., (some folded) ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":151328,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0159/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":49519,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0159/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49520,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0159/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49521,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0159/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49522,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0159/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49523,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0159/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":49524,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0159/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f7e4b07f02db5f24ff","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Maslia, M.L.","contributorId":24090,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Maslia","given":"M.L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":181870,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Johnston, R.H.","contributorId":19536,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnston","given":"R.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":181869,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Quaternary basaltic lavas, pyroclastic rocks, and surficial deposits. \r\n\r\nThe Precambrian rocks are layered metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks that have been assigned to the Baish and Bahah groups. These rocks are cut by Precambrian biotite quartz monzonite and by Miocene gabbro dikes that were intruded during the initial stages of the opening of the Red Sea rift. Tuffaceous siltstone of the Baid formation was also deposited during the Miocene, followed in the Pliocene by the polymict conglomerate of the Bathan formation. The Quaternary rocks include basalt that was extruded during a continuation of the opening of the Red Sea rift, after uplift of the escarpment parallel with the Red Sea but before the Holocene erosional cycle. \r\n\r\nThe greater part of the land area of the quadrangle is covered by Quaternary coastal, pediment, and alluvial deposits of various kinds associated with the deltaic mouths of Wadi Hall and Wadi Yiba and their tributaries and with the development of fringing reefs and islands. The area also contains extensive Quaternary eolian deposits. \r\n\r\nThe economic potential of the quadrangle lies essentially in the agricultural value .of its flood-plain deposits, which are frequently refreshed during flooding with the products of weathering and erosion of the Precambrian rocks in the valleys of Wadi Hal i and Wadi Yiba; coral reefs could possibly provide raw material for use in a cement industry, if any such industry were ever required in this area.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82285","usgsCitation":"Hadley, D., 1982, Reconnaissance geology of the Manjamah Quadrangle, sheet 18/41 A, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-285, 13 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82285.","productDescription":"13 p., 1 over-size sheet, ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140934,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0285/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36999,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0285/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":37000,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0285/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6fe4b07f02db6409a1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hadley, D.G.","contributorId":32527,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hadley","given":"D.G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159421,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
