Although the system digitizes, stacks, and records independently of a computer, it is interfaced to a desktop computer for program control over system parameters such as sampling interval, number of samples, number of times the data are stacked prior to recording on nine-track tape, and for graphics display of the digitized data. The data can be transferred to the desktop computer during recording, or played back from a tape at a later time. Using the desktop computer, the operator can observe results while recording data and generate hard-copy graphics in the field. Thus, the radar operator can immediately evaluate the quality of data being obtained, modify system parameters, study the radar logs before leaving the field, and re-run borehole logs if necessary. The beds are found west of Pierre, South Dakota, over an area of at least 130 mi2 (210 km2) where no other markers within the Virgin Creek Member have been identified. In this area, the Government Draw is a potential tool needed to determine the stratigraphic and structural relationships within the upper part of the Pierre Shale, heretofore little known. In one experiment, rainbow trout fingerlings were fed diets containing three levels of lysine (2.4, 3.1 and 3.8 g per 100 g diet), two levels of arginine (1.7 and 2.5 g per 100 g diet) and two mixtures of Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;and Cl in a 3×2×2 factorial design. The mixtures varied in the proportions of cations to anions such that Cl equalled the sum of Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;and K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(cations − anions = 0 mEq/kg diet) in one mixture and exceeded the sum of Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;and K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(cations − anions = −200 mEq/kg diet) in the second mixture. Growth and efficiency of feed conversion were not affected by dietary lysine and arginine in fish fed diets containing − 200 mEq/kg balance, but when fish were fed diets containing a 0 mEq/kg balance, 3.8% lysine and a combination of 3.1% lysine and 2.5% arginine depressed both measures of response. Trout receiving the 0 mEq/kg cation-anion balance had significantly higher free histidine concentrations and lower free lysine concentrations in muscle and higher hepatic arginase activity (P≤0.01) than those receiving −200 mEq/kg. In another experiment, trout were fed diets containing three levels of K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(21, 191 and 360 mEq/kg), two levels of Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(21 and 191 mEq/kg) and two levels of Cl</span><sup>−</sup><span>&nbsp;(179 and 347 mEq/kg) in a 3×2×2 factorial design. Growth and efficiency of feed conversion were depressed and hepatosomatic index increased with higher levels of dietary K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(P≤0.01), Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(P≤0.05) and Cl (P≤0.01), with significant K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;x Cl</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;(P≤0.01) and K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;x Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;x Cl (P≤0.05) interactions. Increasing dietary K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;resulted in increased levels of muscle free histidine and decreased levels of muscle free lysine and arginine (P≤0.01), while increasing dietary Cl increased muscle free lysine, the effect of which was dependent on dietary potassium (K</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;x Cl</span><sup>−</sup><span>, P≤0.01). It is concluded that dietary levels of K</span><sup>+</sup><span>, Na</span><sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;and Cl</span><sup>−</sup><span>, irrespective of overall cation-anion balance of these minerals, affects growth rate, efficiency of feed utilization and the metabolism of basic amino acids in tissues of trout. Excess lysine causes depressed growth and efficiency of feed utilization. The effect of limited feed intake on growth, body composition, and potential for migration to the sea was investigated. Dilution of feed by 10‐40% with sodium bentonite was not effective in reducing growth; the fish used the nutrients more efficiently and their growth was nearly equal to that of controls. Hand feeding of a decreased ration reduced growth rate, but about a 50% reduction in feed was required to effect the desired reduction in growth rate. Fish were able to compensate for fasting periods of short duration and significant growth reduction did not occur until the fasting periods were 4 d or longer. Alternate feeding and fasting periods of equal lengths produced the desired growth rate reduction. The impetus has been a legislated goal to generate 10% of California's electricity by windpower by the year 2000, and generous state and federal tax incentives. Windpower is promoted as environmentally benign, which it is in traditional uses. The California program, however, is not traditional: it calls for centralized development of a magnitude sufficient to offset significant amounts of fossil fuels now used to generate electricity. Centralized windfarm development, as exemplified by the Altamont Pass, Tehachapi Mountains, and San Gorgonio Pass developments, involves major road building projects in erosion-sensitive terrain, effective closure of public lands, and other detrimental effects. A windfarm consisting of 200 turbines with 17-m rotors located in steep terrain 16 km from an existing corridor might occupy 235 ha and physically disturb 86 ha. With average annual wind speeds of 22.5 km/h, the farm would generate about 10??106 kWh/year at present levels of capacity. This annual production would offset 1% of one day's consumption of oil in California. To supply 10% of the state's electricity (at 1984 production rates) would require about 600,000 turbines of the type in common use today and would occupy more than 685,000 ha. Uranium is preferentially incorporated in needles and twigs compared to larger branches or the trunk. The U concentration in needle ash ranges from 0.2 to 5.8μg g<sup>−1</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>(ppm) and shows no correlation with the U concentration in associated soils. Rather, the distribution of anomalously uraniferous douglas fir (&gt; 1.0<i>μ</i>g g<sup>−1</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>U in needle ash) appears to be controlled by observed or readily inferred pathways of near-surface groundwater movement in the drainage. These pathways include: (1) general downslope movement of subsurface runoff; (2) increased flux of near-surface groundwater near the toe of an alluvial fan; and (3) emergence of uraniferous (100–150 ng ml<sup>−1</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>[ppb] groundwater in the vicinity of a slope spring. The data also indicate the presence of near-surface uraniferous groundwater along a structurally controlled zone that parallels the north-south strike of the valley, and that includes the slope spring. The bootstrap method is a Monte Carlo technique in which random samples are drawn from an unspecified sampling distribution defined from observed data. The nonparametric nature of the bootstrap makes it suitable for comparing methods based on a flow series for which the true distribution is unknown. Results show that the two methods based on hypothetical distribution (Log-Pearson III and Weibull) had lower mean square errors than did the G. E. P. Box-D. R. Cox transformation method or the Log-W. C. This task was conducted in conjunction with a longterm study of precipitation chemistry at high altitude sites located in remote areas of the southwestern United States. Coefficients of variation and recovery values were determined for a standard reference water sample for all metals examined for both techniques. At concentration levels less than 10 micrograms per liter AAGF analyses exhibited better precision and accuracy than ICP. The geostrophic current has produced sediment drifts that are covered with bedforms. The sediment drifts are difficult to detect on </span><i>Gloria</i><span> long-range side-scan sonar data but are easily resolved on seismic-reflection records as anomalously thick accumulations of sediment banked against either buried or outcropping basement highs. The bedforms ornamenting the drift surfaces were subdivided into 1,000-m water-depth intervals, and their dimensions were tabulated. There are few bedforms in water depths less han 2,000 m, but from depths between 2,000 and 4,000 m they are numerous and have a mean wavelength of 695 m. Bedforms from depths greater than 4,000 m have a mean wavelength of 999 m. The different wavelengths from different water depths suggest two distinct and separated boundary flows. The wave heights of all bedforms found in water depths greater than 2,000 m are less than 10 m. In order to investigate the continuity of sediment drifting through geological time, the stratigraphic section drilled at DSDP Site 398 was reinterpreted and, using seismic-reflection profiles, was traced throughout the northern Iberian margin. Together, the lithostratigraphic and seismic data indicate that sediment drifting developed along this margin in the Eocene. The lithofacies of the Eocene section is t e oldest to have numerous layers of sand and silt. An unconformity separates the Eocene section from the latest Miocene-Pliocene section. The unconformity is interpreted to be the result of the initial pulses of Mediterranean outflow that followed the Messinian desiccation events. Results characterize the solution behavior of uranium as U-bearing water interacts with relatively undecomposed, surficial organic matter. Of the measured major and trace chemical species, only U is consistently highly enriched (17-318 ppb) relative to reported values for regional waters, or to literature values for waters in largely granitic terrains. R-mode factor analysis of the chemical data suggests that most U is present in a soluble form, but that some U is also associated with fine suspended particulates of clay, organic matter, or hydrous oxides. Calculations that apply thermodynamic data to predict U speciation in solution indicate the relative importance of uranyl carbonate and uranyl phosphate complexes. Analysis of more finely filtered samples (0.05 ??m vs. 0.45 ??m), and direct radiographic observations using fission-track detectors suspended in the waters indicate the presence of some uraniferous particulate matter. Application of existing thermodynamic data for uranous- and uranyl-bearing minerals indicates that all waters are undersaturated with U minerals as long as ambient Eh ??? +0.1 v. If coexisting surface and near-surface waters are sufficiently oxidizing, initial fixation of U in the deposit should be by a mechanism of adsorption. Alternatively, more reducing conditions may prevail in deeper pore waters of the organic-rich host sediments, perhaps leading to direct precipitation or diagenetic formation of U4+ minerals. A  234U 238U alpha activity ratio of 1.08 ?? 0.02 in a spring issuing from a hillslope above the deposit suggests a relatively soluble source of U. Methodological complications previously associated with such experiments have been overcome. Adsorption of zinc ion onto synthetic colloidal titania (TiO<sub>2</sub>) was studied as a function of pH, supporting electrolyte (NaCl) concentration (0·1-0·002<span>&nbsp;</span><span class=\"small-caps\">m</span>) and particle concentration (2–50 mg l<sup>−1</sup>).
