The sorption is characterized by two reaction steps, with the first reaching completion within 24 hours. The second step proceeded at a slow and nearly constant rate for at least 7 days. The rate of calcite recrystallization was also studied, using a Ca2+ isotopic exchange technique. Both the recrystallization rate of calcite and the rate of slow Cd2+ sorption decrease with increasing pH or with increasing Mg2+. The recrystallization rate could be predicted from the number of moles of Ca present in the hydrated surface layer. A model is presented which is consistent with the rates of Cd2+ sorption and Ca2+ isotopic exchange. In the model, the first step in Cd2+ sorption involves a fast adsorption reaction that is followed by diffusion of Cd2+ into a surface layer of hydrated CaCO3 that overlies crystalline calcite. Desorption of Cd2+ from the hydrated layer is slow. The second step is solid solution formation in new crystalline material, which grows from the disordered mixture of Cd and Ca carbonate in the hydrated surface layer. Most of the Colorado group can be related to a hypothetical parent water containing ???400 ppm Cl at ???250??C by dilution with ???50% of cold meteoric water. The thermal springs in the most deeply eroded part of the caldera were derived from the same parent water by boiling. The hydrothermal system has probably been active for at least as long as 300,000 years, based on geologic evidence and calculations of paleo-heat flow. There is no evidence for economic mineralization at shallow depth. Peak-flow records at 730 gaging stations having 10 or more annual peaks were selected for computing station skews. Station skew values ranged from -3.55 to 2.95, with a mean of -0.11. Frequency curves computed for 30 gaging stations in Illinois using the variations of the regional-mean skew technique are similar to frequency curves computed using a skew map developed by the US Water Resources Council (WRC). Estimates of the 50-, 100-, and 500-yr floods computed for 29 of these gaging stations using the regional-mean skew techniques are within the 50% confidence limits of frequency curves computed using the WRC skew map. Although the three variations of the regional-mean skew technique were slightly more accurate than the WRC map, there is no appreciable difference between flood estimates computed using the variations of the regional-mean technique and flood estimates computed using the WRC skew map. Interannual fluctuations in large-scale atmospheric circulation and associated precipitation and runoff can produce major disruptions in the \"average\" climatologic picture. Such fluctuations can be inferred and simplified from the time-averaged atmospheric pressure field and large-scale patterns of stream flow anomalies (eg., high or low stream flow). Further, the effect of the climate gradient along western United States on the total dissolved solids concentrations in rivers is summarized as a highly idealized force-response model of total dissolved solids concentrations as a function of river flow. Their distributions mark nearshore provincial boundaries that are nearly identical with those previously documented from the distribution of ostracodes and molluscs. Thirteen species are characteristic of the Panamanian Province, one is characteristic of the Chilean-Peruvian Province, and one is characteristic of the newly proposed Sonoran Subprovince. Seventeen species (7%) appear to be endemic to the eastern Pacific. Fifty-eight (25%) of the species recognized are disjunct from population centers in the western Pacific, 134 species (59%) are disjunct from modern assemblages of the Atlanto-Caribbean region, and 40 species (17%) are disjunct from both the western Pacific and the Atlanto-Caribbean. That first Special Issue consisted of eight papers: four are primarily tutorial (image processing, spectral signatures in the visible and near infrared, microwave spectra of layered media, and factor analysis of gamma-ray spectrometry), two involve structural interpretations with implications for mineral exploration and seismicity, and two examine multispectral reflectance data for detecting hydrothermal alteration and for uranium exploration. Although these papers indicate the importance of physical properties and models in the interpretation of remote sensing data, the studies were constrained by the instruments that collected the data and by the availability of image-processing software. The hypothesis that a primary break in the slope of the spectrum, plotted semi-logarithmically, is due to a transition from dominance by core sources to dominance by crustal magnetization is tested. Simple arrays of dipoles and current loops are found whose combined fields fit the spectrum. Two distinctly different ranges of source depth are found to be adequate. Heat capacities for both synthetic and natural ZnCO</span><sub>3</sub><span>&nbsp;samples were measured by differential scanning calorimetry at temperatures ranging from 340 to 497 K. We compared the three models at epoch 1985.0 against each other and against a new model based on observatory data available as of July 1, 1985. These comparisons showed that one of the three candidate models disagreed more with the other two and our model, especially in the eastern Pacific. None of the candidate models was seen to respond to a change in the secular variation of the vertical component that appears to have taken place most strongly in the western Pacific area since 1982. The lack of satellite data was seen to be a significant handicap towards prediction of the field change over most of the Earth's surface, especially the southern oceans. The compositional dependence of the equilibrium constant was calculated from the composition of saturated (stoichiometric) solutions and used to calculate the activities and activity coefficients of CaCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;and SrCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;in the solid Ca<sub>(1&minus;<i>x</i>)</sub>Sr<sub><i>x</i></sub>CO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;at 25 and 76&deg;C. The results show that the solid-solution is not regular but unsymmetrical. The equilibrium constant is denned as a function of the SrCO</span><sub>3</sub><span>&nbsp;mole fraction,&nbsp;</span><i>x</i><span>, by the relation</span></p>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"formula\">\n<div class=\"mathml\"><span id=\"mmlsi2\" class=\"mathmlsrc\"><img class=\"imgLazyJSB inlineImage\" title=\"\" src=\"http://ars.els-cdn.com/content/image/1-s2.0-0016703787903243-si2.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"575\" height=\"36\" data-inlimgeid=\"1-s2.0-0016703787903243-si2.gif\" data-loaded=\"true\" /></span></div>\n</div>\n<p><span>where&nbsp;</span><i>R</i><span>&nbsp;is the gas constant,&nbsp;</span><i>T</i><span>&nbsp;is in Kelvins and&nbsp;</span><i>K</i><sub><i>A</i></sub><span>&nbsp;and&nbsp;</span><i>K</i><sub><i>S</i></sub><span>&nbsp;are the aragonite and strontianite equilibrium constants.</span></p>\n<p>&nbsp;</p>\n<p id=\"\">The experimental results indicate the Henry's law coefficients of SrCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;in aragonites containing 0 to 6 mole percent SrCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;are approximately 91&plusmn; 8 and 23 &plusmn; 1 at 25 and 76&deg;C, respectively and for strontianites the Henry's law coefficients and applicable compositional ranges are approximately 7.3 &plusmn; 0.3 (0.84 &le;&nbsp;<i>x</i>&nbsp;&le; 1.00) and 3.3 &plusmn; 0.5 (0.50 &le;&nbsp;<i>x</i>&nbsp;&le; 1.00) at 25 and 76&deg;C, respectively. Substitution of small amounts of Sr in aragonite and Ca in strontianite initially increases the stability of the solid. The most stable aragonites and strontianites contain 0.58 &plusmn; 0.03 and 12.5 &plusmn; 1.1 mole percent SrCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;and CaCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;at 25&deg;C and 3.1 &plusmn; 0.3 and 17.2 &plusmn; 1.1 mole percent SrCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;and CaCO<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;at 76&deg;C, respectively. The spinode occurs over the regions 0.065 &plusmn; 0.001 &le;&nbsp;<i>x</i>&nbsp;&le; 0.620 &plusmn; 0.014 at 25&deg;C and 0.103 &plusmn; 0.007 &le;&nbsp;<i>x</i>&nbsp;&le; 0.585 &plusmn; 0.019 at 76&deg;C where all compositions are unstable. A miscibility gap occurs over the compositional ranges 0.0058 &plusmn; 0.0003 &le;&nbsp;<i>x</i>&nbsp;&le; 0.875 &plusmn; 0.011 at 25&deg;C and 0.031 &plusmn; 0.003 &le;&nbsp;<i>x</i>&nbsp;&le; 0.828 &plusmn; 0.011 at 76&deg;C and is in reasonable agreement with reported compositions of natural aragonites and strontianites. Marine aragonites are neither at equilibrium nor stoichiometric saturation with surface seawater. The experimentally observed distribution coefficient of Sr in aragonite is 12 times larger than the calculated equilibrium value (0.095) at 25&deg;C. Sediment of both areas is texturally similar, consisting of a muddy sand that grades to a mud with increasing water depth. Mineralogically, both areas are characterized by a clay-size fraction dominated by illite, chlorite, and rock flour. The dominant fabric of undisturbed sediment from both study areas consists of a sand- and coarse-silt-size agranular fraction surrounded by an open matrix of clay- and fine-silt-size platelets arranged in a combination of randomly oriented flocs and many single grain contacts. The similarity of the fabric of sediment from the two study areas suggests that the fabric is not controlled by the different depositional settings but rather by the dominant clay mineralogy and sediment texture. Relationships between gas permeability and net confining pressure were measured for cycles of loading and unloading. For some samples, permeabilities were measured both along and across bedding planes. Large variations in stress sensitivity of permeability were observed from one sample to another. The ratio of permeability at a nominal confining pressure of 500 psi to that at 5000 psi was used to define a stress sensitivity ratio. For a given sample, confining pressure vs permeability followed a linear log-log relationship, the slope of which provided an index of pressure sensitivity. This index, as obtained for first unloading data, was used in testing relationships between stress sensitivity and other measured rock properties. Pressure sensitivity tended to increase with increase in carbonate content and depth, and with decrease in porosity, permeability and sodium feldspar. However, scatter in these relationships increased as permeability decreased. Tests for correlations between pressure sensitivity and various linear combinations of variables are reported.
