It is the principal source of municipal, industrial, and agricultural water supply in south Georgia and most of Florida. The aquifer, known as the Floridan aquifer in Florida and the principal artesian aquifer in Georgia, Alabama, and South Carolina, includes various carbonate units of Paleocene to early Miocene age that are hydraulically connected in varying degrees. Very locally, in the Brunswick, Ga., area, a thin sequence of rocks of Late Cretaceous age is part of the system. In general the aquifer consists of either one vertically continuous permeable zone or two major permeable zones separated by a less permeable unit of highly variable water-transmitting characteristics. Aquifer conditions range from unconfined to confined depending upon whether the clayey Miocene and younger rocks that form the upper confining unit have been removed by erosion.\r\n\r\nDigital model simulation shows that prior to development, most flow in the aquifer occurred in the unconfined and thinly confined areas of northwest and central Florida and southwest Georgia. Springs in these areas are visible evidence of major flow activity. Spring discharge to streams accounted for about 90 percent of the average predevelopment discharge from the regional aquifer. About 18,100 cubic feet per second left the limestone aquifer as spring flow, and 2,500 cubic feet per second discharged as diffuse upward leakage from the confined areas where the vertical head gradient was upward. Most of the 20,600 cubic feet per second recharge necessary to balance total discharge entered the limestone aquifer in the unconfined and thinly confined areas. Because the areas of greatest recharge before development were near the areas of highest discharge, flow paths were generally short. Much water went into and out of the limestone quickly. A very active shallow flow system at the expense of deep circulation has evolved in unconfined and sligptly confined spring areas. Transmissivities commonly exceed 1,000,000 feet squared per day.\r\n\r\nIn contrast, predevelopment flow in the aquifer in the tightly confined areas of southeast and coastal Georgia, far west Florida, and in south Florida was sluggish. In these areas the aquifer is overlain by several hundred feet of sand and clay, except for the outcrop areas along the updip limit of the aquifer. This thick overburden severely retards discharge from the aquifer, causing lethargic flow. Large-discharge springs are nonexistent. The south Florida and southeast Georgia segments of the flow system, which taken together occupy about 50 percent of the regional system, only accounted for slightly more than 3 percent of the predevelopment regional limestone discharge. Transmissivities are on the average lower (generally less than 250,000 feet squared per day) than those in areas of high-flow activity.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82905","usgsCitation":"Bush, P.W., 1982, Predevelopment flow in the Tertiary limestone aquifer, southeastern United States: A regional analysis from digital modeling: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-905, v, 41 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82905.","productDescription":"v, 41 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":35732,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0905/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402563,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_35647.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":142050,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0905/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Alabama, Florida, Georgia","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -89,24 ], [ -89,34 ], [ -80,34 ], [ -80,24 ], [ -89,24 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4acce4b07f02db67ea30","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bush, Peter W.","contributorId":57820,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bush","given":"Peter","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":157192,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Eighty-two samples representing a variety of units found at the surface show that most rocks in the Calico Hills, other than parts of the Eleana Formation, are relatively nonmagnetic. The magnetic vector of the Eleana Formation at the surface was found to point northward and downward. Remanence directions were scattered, but a remanence azimuth of 16? east of north was assigned on the basis of present-day declination. Measurements of 123 samples of the Eleana Formation from the exploratory drill hole UE25a-3 indicate that some facies are strongly magnetic. The average total magnetization of the argillite samples is 3.89 A/m (0.00389 emu). These samples have an average natural remanent inclination of 76?. Results of demagnetization demonstrated that this relatively high inclination is due, at least in part, to a soft vertical component of remanent magnetization. The magnitude of the component could not be determined. Further tests showed that the tendency to pick up a soft component of magnetism may be a function of rock type. Inhomogeneity of the Eleana argillite was probably the cause of some differences in remanence values between large and small samples from the same depth.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82536","usgsCitation":"Baldwin, M., and Jahren, C., 1982, Magnetic properties of drill core and surface samples from the Calico Hills area, Nye County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-536, ii, 32 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82536.","productDescription":"ii, 32 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141298,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0536/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35272,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0536/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db64932e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Baldwin, M.J.","contributorId":81096,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baldwin","given":"M.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156595,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Jahren, C.E.","contributorId":6443,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jahren","given":"C.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156594,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Although solution of the underlying rocks is the ultimate cause of sinkholes, some have been induced by abrupt changes in ground-water levels caused by pumping. Declines in water levels cause loss of support to the bedrock roofs over cavities and to surficial material overlying openings in the top of bedrock. The volume of calcium, magnesium , and carbonate (the constituents of limestone and dolomite) in solution in the water withdrawn from four well fields near Tampa totaled about 240,000 cubic feet in 1978. Most induced solution takes place at the limestone surface however, and the area of induced recharge is so extensive that the effect of induced limestone solution on sinkhole development is negligible. Alinement of established sinkholes along joint patterns in the bedrock suggests that a well along these lineations might have direct hydraulic connection with a zone of incipient sinkholes. Therefore, pumping of large-capacity wells along such lineations would increase the probability of sinkhole development. Although sinkholes generally form abruptly in the study area, local changes such as vegetative stress, ponding of rainfall, misalinement of structures, and turbidity in well water are all indications that percollapse subsidence may be taking place. The waters grade from a fresh calcium magnesium bicarbonate sulfate type to a very saline sodium magnesium chloride type downgradient. Bromide-chloride and specific conductance ratios indicate that dilution of marine-like ground water is a signigicant mechanism in the evolution of the different water types found. Calcium, magnesium , and bicarbonate concentrations occur within a relatively narrow range and are primarily a function of mineral equilibria. Magnesium and strontium concentration distributions suggest several mineral-water interactions, including aragonite inversion, incongruent solution of magnesium calcite to a lower magnesian form, and dedolomitization. Sulfate concentrations increase downgradient and evince gypsum-anhydrite solution, particularly in the fresher waters. The extent to which each factor affects dissolved specie concentrations is a function of the location of the water in the flow system. The proposed site was believed to be a relatively undisturbed synclinal structure containing a thick argillite unit of Misslsslppian age, the Eleana Formation unit J, which would be the emplacement medium. Data acquisition for the geophysical studies was constrained because of rugged topography in a block of Tipplpah Limestone overlying the central part of the proposed site. This study employed gravity, magnetic, seismic refraction and reflection, and four distinct electrical methods to try and define the structural integrity and shape of the proposed repository medium. Detailed and regional gravity work revealed complex structure at the site. Magnetics helped only in identifying small areas of Tertiary volcanic rocks because of low magnetization of the rocks. Seismic refraction assisted in identifying near surface faulting and bedrock structure. Difficulty was experienced in obtaining good quality reflection data. This implied significant structural complexity but also revealed the principal features that were supported by other data. Electrical methods were used for fault identification and for mapping of a thick argillaceous unit of the Eleana Formation in which nuclear waste was to be emplaced. \r\n\r\nThe geophysical studies indicate that major faults along the axis of Syncline Ridge and on both margins have large vertical offsets displacing units so as not only to make mining difficult, but also providing potential paths for waste migration to underlying carbonate aquifers. The Eleana Formation appeared heterogeneous, which was inferred to be due to structural complexity. Only a small region in the northwest part of the study area was found to contain a thick and relatively undisturbed volume of host rock.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr82145","usgsCitation":"Hoover, D., Hanna, W.F., Anderson, L.A., Flanigan, V.J., and Pankratz, L.W., 1982, Geophysical studies of the Syncline Ridge area, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-145, 72 p., ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82145.","productDescription":"72 p., ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":140180,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0145/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":34602,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0145/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac7e4b07f02db67b437","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hoover, D.B.","contributorId":37734,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hoover","given":"D.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":154740,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hanna, W. This report contains hydrologic data collected in an active coal mining area in Clay and Vigo Counties, Indiana, from September 1977 through February 1980. Methods of sampling and analysis used in collecting the data also are summarized. The data include field and laboratory measurements of water at 41 wells and 24 stream sites. Variables measured in the field include water temperature, specific conductance, pH, Eh, dissolved oxygen, ground-water levels, and streamflow; and in the laboratory, concentrations of major ions, alkalinity, hardness, trace elementsl, organic carbon, phosphorus, and dissolved solids. Other variables measured in the laboratory include ferrous iron concentration of water samples from selected wells, percent sulfur by weight and the potential acidity of core samples of reclaimed cast overburden, concentrations of elements absorbed on streambed materials, concentrations and particle size of suspended sediment in water, and populations and Shannon diversity indices of phytoplankton in water. Dissolved-solids concentrations and pH of ground water ranged from 173 to 5,130 milligrams per liter and from 6.1 to 8.9, respectively, and of surface water, from 120 to 4,100 milligrams per liter and from 6.1 to 8.8 respectively.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82639","usgsCitation":"Bobo, L.L., and Eikenberry, S.E., 1982, Hydrologic data collected in and around a surface coal mine, Clay and Vigo counties, Indiana, 1977-80: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-639, vii, 123 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82639.","productDescription":"vii, 123 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":346,"text":"Indiana Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":140240,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0639/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35533,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0639/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Indiana","county":"Clay, Vigo","geographicExtents":"{\"type\":\"FeatureCollection\",\"features\":[{\"type\":\"Feature\",\"geometry\":{\"type\":\"Polygon\",\"coordinates\":[[[-87.1992,39.6082],[-87.1233,39.6063],[-87.011,39.6041],[-87.0116,39.5176],[-87.0125,39.4736],[-86.9404,39.4734],[-86.9426,39.3424],[-87.014,39.3426],[-87.0532,39.3433],[-87.0549,39.1701],[-87.1267,39.1702],[-87.2383,39.1728],[-87.238,39.2607],[-87.3485,39.2605],[-87.4578,39.2606],[-87.572,39.261],[-87.6011,39.2612],[-87.6023,39.2626],[-87.6032,39.2638],[-87.6031,39.267],[-87.603,39.2694],[-87.6018,39.2724],[-87.6012,39.2744],[-87.602,39.2768],[-87.6034,39.2783],[-87.6048,39.28],[-87.6057,39.2811],[-87.6062,39.2838],[-87.6068,39.2852],[-87.6068,39.2874],[-87.6049,39.2901],[-87.6031,39.2924],[-87.6006,39.2946],[-87.5988,39.2968],[-87.5981,39.2991],[-87.5987,39.3011],[-87.599,39.3016],[-87.5999,39.3034],[-87.6023,39.3047],[-87.6047,39.3052],[-87.6089,39.3047],[-87.6118,39.3042],[-87.6148,39.3042],[-87.616,39.3044],[-87.617,39.3048],[-87.6182,39.3061],[-87.6181,39.308],[-87.6169,39.3089],[-87.6149,39.3096],[-87.6141,39.3098],[-87.6107,39.3106],[-87.6078,39.3116],[-87.6061,39.3128],[-87.6036,39.3155],[-87.5993,39.3218],[-87.595,39.3267],[-87.5941,39.328],[-87.5925,39.3303],[-87.5901,39.3334],[-87.5876,39.3361],[-87.585,39.3385],[-87.5826,39.3402],[-87.582,39.3405],[-87.5803,39.3412],[-87.5767,39.3426],[-87.5726,39.3431],[-87.5666,39.3426],[-87.5645,39.3424],[-87.5595,39.342],[-87.5588,39.342],[-87.5565,39.3423],[-87.5547,39.3428],[-87.5518,39.3437],[-87.55,39.3451],[-87.5482,39.3474],[-87.5479,39.3479],[-87.5471,39.3492],[-87.5465,39.3509],[-87.5455,39.3522],[-87.5449,39.3529],[-87.5442,39.3533],[-87.5418,39.3542],[-87.5411,39.3544],[-87.5401,39.3544],[-87.539,39.354],[-87.537,39.3529],[-87.5348,39.3517],[-87.5322,39.3507],[-87.5304,39.3516],[-87.5308,39.4178],[-87.5307,39.4388],[-87.5309,39.4767],[-87.5309,39.5615],[-87.531,39.5988],[-87.5311,39.6091],[-87.4607,39.6096],[-87.3819,39.6093],[-87.349,39.6091],[-87.2356,39.6089],[-87.1992,39.6082]]]},\"properties\":{\"name\":\"Clay\",\"state\":\"IN\"}}]}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a26e4b07f02db60f7c1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bobo, Linda L.","contributorId":104053,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bobo","given":"Linda","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156893,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Eikenberry, Stephen E.","contributorId":35309,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eikenberry","given":"Stephen","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156892,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The water was generally very hard (hardness as calcium carbonate greater than 180 milligrams per liter). The concentrations of principal dissolved constituents varied throughout the year in relation to releases from Possum Kingdom Lake and to runoff from the intervening drainage area.</p>\n<p>Thermal stratification in Lake Granbury usually begins during April and persists until September or October. Stratification causes significant seasonal and areal variations in the concentration of dissolved oxygen, which in turn cause variations in the concentrations of dissolved iron and manganese, total inorganic nitrogen, and total phosphorus. Oxygen Utilized in the decay of organic matter and bottom material is not replenished during periods of summer stagnation, and water below depths of 30 to 40 feet (9 to 12 meters) usually contains less than 1.0 milligram per liter of dissolved oxygen. Variations in the concentrations of dissolved solids are associated with localized inflows.</p>\n<p>During periods of summer stagnation, reducing conditions result in the dissolution of iron and manganese from the bottom deposits in the lake. At site Ac, a deep site near De Cordova Bend Dam, iron concentrations in water near the bottom during summer stagnation ranged from 50 to 700 micrograms per liter and averaged 230 micrograms per liter. Manganese concentrations ranged from 1,300 to 3,700 micrograms per liter and averaged 1,800 micrograms per liter. During periods of winter circulation and in water near the surface during summer stagnation, both iron and manganese concentrations averaged less than I00 micrograms per liter.</p>\n<p>The concentrations of total inorganic nitrogen and total phosphorus are greatest during summer stagnation in water near the bottom at deep-water sites. At site A c during the summer, the concentration of total inorganic nitrogen averaged 2.37 milligrams per liter and the concentration of total phosphorus averaged 0.19 milligram per liter. The concentrations of both these constituents in waters near the surface during the entire year and in bottom waters during the winter averaged 0.07 milligram per liter or less.</p>\n<p>Seasonal-temperature variations and variations in the concentration of dissolved oxygen result in dissolved iron and manganese, total inorganic nitrogen, and total phosphorus being recycled within the lake; however, no significant accumulations of these constituents were detected.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Austin, TX","doi":"10.3133/ofr82676","usgsCitation":"Andrews, F.L., and Strause, J.L., 1982, Water quality of Lake Granbury, north-central Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-676, vi, 155 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82676.","productDescription":"vi, 155 p.","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":140624,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0676/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":35196,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0676/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4affe4b07f02db697e5e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Andrews, Freeman L.","contributorId":91486,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Andrews","given":"Freeman","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156512,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Strause, Jeffrey L.","contributorId":61420,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Strause","given":"Jeffrey","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":156511,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The most widespread and widely used aquifer lies near sea level. Locally, available data also indicate that one or more water-bearing zones lie above the sea-level aquifer. Pumpage in 1979 totaled about 1.67 billion gallons; about 90% was pumped from the sea-level aquifer. Most large producing wells in the county have pumping water levels near or below sea level, so that if pumping continued for a long enough time, seawater intrusion would result. Sampling of chloride concentrations in July 1978, April 1980, and August 1980 indicated problem areas mainly in northeastern and southern Camano Island and in central Whidbey Island.
