Additional water data were collected at various sites not involved in the systematic data-collection program and are published as miscellaneous measurements and analyses. Reduction of flood peaks ranged from 58 to 91 percent during the study period from 1975 to 1979.</p>\n<p>There is an inverse relation between sediment concentration and outflow from the FRS during floods. As water went into storage in the flood pool in March 1976, the daily-mean total-sediment concentration in the FRS outflow dropped from 562 to 147 milligrams per liter. Sediment concentration subsequently increased to 809 milligrams per liter as the discharge from the FRS dropped; concentrations remained more than 400 milligrams per liter for several weeks thereafter. Most sediment stored in the flood pool during flood flows is released from the reservoir during subsequent reduced discharge. Sediment trapping efficiency of the FRS was about 7 percent for the 4-year period of the study.</p>\n<p>The bankfull capacity of the channel was reduced from 154 cubic feet per second upstream from the flood pool of the FRS to 65 cubic feet per second just downstream from the FRS. This latter discharge corresponds closely to the normal FRS outflow of 58 to 71 cubic feet per second during floods. Mean bankfull depth downstream from the FRS has adjusted to a value 45 percent less than upstream from the structure due to sedimentation of materials transported from the FRS during reduced flows. The hydraulic geometry and relationships between channel geometry and drainage area indicate little effect of the FRS near the mouth of Trout Creek, 2.4 miles downstream from the FRS. The arthropod fauna of Trout Creek is large and diverse. No effects of the FRS on these fauna were observed from April 1975 to October 1979.</p>\n<p>From fall 1975 to winter 1978, the most important factor contributing to increased brown trout egg survival and fry emergence in Trout Creek during a single reproductive season is higher water temperatures in the upper reaches of the stream. The FRS was not found to have any significant effect on trout reproduction during that period.</p>\n<p>From 1960 to 1979, winter floods seem to have had the greatest adverse effect on the survival of brown trout eggs and sac fry. Although construction of the FRS has eliminated some spawning gravels in the flood pool owing to sedimentation, the wild trout have adapted by using spawning grounds above the flood pool more extensively and intensively. The FRS has not blocked the upstream migration of spawning trout, but it has eliminated similar migrations of fish that compete with and prey on the trout. The work was conducted aboard R/V JAMES M. GILLISS (cruise GS-7903-3). The purpose of the cruise was to determine the characteristics of mass sediment movement on the Continental Slope, and to study and correlate the stratigraphy of the Jurassic and Cretaceous strata lying north and south of the New England seamount chain.</p><p>Seismic instrumentation included 40-in<sup>3</sup>, 160-in<sup>3</sup>, and 500-in<sup>3</sup> airguns; a Teledyne 800-joule minisparker system; a 3-5-kHz to 7-kHz, hull-mounted tunable transducer; and a 7-channel analog tape recorder.</p><p>Navigation control during the cruise was provided by a Western Integrated Navigation System capable of integrating satellite, rho-rho Loran-C, hyperbolic Loran-C, gyro compass, and doppler speed-log position data. The prime navigation sensor was the rho-rho Loran-C automatically recorded at 20-second intervals and manually plotted every 15 minutes, backed up by hyperbolic Loran-C fixes automatically recorded every 5 minutes.</p><p>Of the 4,032 km of data collected, 3,257 km of 3-5-kHz, minisparker and 40-in<sup>3</sup> airgun were for the sediment-slump studand the other 775 km of 3-5-kHz, minis parker, 160-in<sup>3</sup> air gun and 500-in<sup>3</sup> airgun were for the deep stratigraphy study. The investigation centered on data collected during 1958-77 at the U.S. Geological Survey 's station at Marshall, N.C. The quality of water in the French Broad River at Marshall is suitable for most uses. None of the major dissolved constituents and nutrients, nor defined properties such as hardness, alkalinity and color, exceed suggested limits for drinking waters. Chromium, lead, selenium, and zinc are the only trace metals to occasionally exceed drinking water standards. Dissolved oxygen levels are high year round, remaining near or above the saturation level even at higher summer temperatures. Results of tests for biological oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand characterize the French Broad at Marshall as a clean river. However, 58% of samples analyzed for fecal coliform bacteria during 1974-77 exceeded recommended limits for bathing waters. In 1958, an estimated 64% of the dissolved solids load in the river at Marshall was due to pollution. By 1966, 74% of the dissolved load could be attributed to pollution. Loads of dissolved solids, sodium, sulfate, and calcium showed the most dramatic increases, coinciding with general increases in population and industrial employment. New wastewater treatment facilities and improved industrial technology have apparently combined to curb pollution and reverse the earlier trend. The Clayton station provides information on the upper fourth of the basin (1,129 mi 2) which includes several urbanized areas, including Raleigh, N.C., and part of Durham, N.C. The Kinston station provides information from the predominantly rural midsection of the basin (2,690 mi2). A network of temporary stations on small rural streams in the Neuse River and adjacent basins provide an estimate of baseline or es- sentially unpolluted water quality. \r\n\r\nOverall, the water quality of the Neuse River is satisfactory for most uses. However, dissolved-oxygen, iron, and manganese concentrations, pH, and bacterial concentrations often reach undesirable levels. Concentrations of cadmium, and lead also periodically peak at or above criterion levels for domestic water supply sources. Nutrient levels are generally high enough to allow rich algal growth. \r\n\r\nSediment concentrations in the Neuse are high in comparison to pristine streams, however, the impacts of these high levels are difficult to quantify. Sediment and nutrient concentrations peak on the leading edge of flood discharges at Clayton. At Kinston, however, the discharge and sediment concentration peak almost simultaneously. \r\n\r\nChanges in algal dominance, from genera usually associated with organically enriched waters to genera that are less tolerant to organic enrichment, indicate improvement in water qualiy of the Neuse since 1973. These changes, along with a reduction in total organic carbon concentrations, coincide with activation in 1976 of a new waste-water treatment plant for the Raleigh metropolitan area. \r\n\r\nThe amount of dissolved inorganic pollution in the Neuse was determined by subtacting estimated natural loads of dissolved constituents from measured total loads. Pollution makes up approximately 50 percent of the total dissolved material transported by the Neuse. \r\n\r\nTwo different data transformation methods allowed trends to be identified in constituent concentrations. Both methods recomputed concentrations as if they were determined at a constant discharge over the period of record. Although little change since 1956 can be seen in many constituents, increases of over 50 percent are shown for potassium and sulfate concentrations. These long-term rises indicate the increasing impact that man has had on the Neuse River, in spite of improved waste-water treatment in the basin. Data indicate that 82 percent of the time the flow in Wilsons Creek upstream from the wastewater-treatment plant is less than the effluent discharged from the plant. On October 15, 1977, an advanced wastewater-treatment facility was put into operation. Of the four water-quality indicators measured at the monitoring stations (specific conductance, dissolved oxygen, pH, and water temperature), only dissolved oxygen showed improvement downstream from the plant. During urban runoff, the specific conductance momentarily increased and dissolved-oxygen concentration momentarily decreased in Wilsons Creek upstream from the plant. Urban runoff was found to have no long-term effects on specific conductance and dissolved oxygen downstream from the plant before or after the addition of the advanced wastewater-treatment facility. The predominent chemical type of water in streams draining the study area is calcium bicarbonate. In-stream concentrations of chemical constituents generally decrease with increasing streamflow. Exceptions to this are nitrate and phosphorus, which enter the streams as components of surface runoff. Computed mean annual discharges of dissolved solids ranged from 512 tons for Pony CratkSabetha, Kansas, to 23,900 tons for the Wolf River near Sparks, Kansas. Sediment yields in the study area, predominently silt and clay, are among the largest in the State. Drainage basins in the northern part of the study area yielded the most suspended sediment, with Pony Creek at Sabetha and near Reserve, Kansas, yielding 5,100 tons per square mile per year. The results of this study are important for the planning of future mining operations and will aid in developing suitable reclamation procedures. In addition, these data will serve as a base line from which a long-term program for determining rates of erosion and deposition could be developed. Such measurements are essential to understanding the impact of surface mining on geomorphic processes affected by extraction of resources form arid lands. The area chosen for the study lies within for 7-1/2-minute quadrangles (The Hogback South, Kirtland SW, Newcomb NE, and The Pillar NW) in the northwest San Juan Basin (figs. 1,2). The area includes five drainage basins covering approximately 200 mi<sup>2</sup> (520 km<sup>2</sup>) that flow west into the Chaco River (fig. 1).
