While these lithologies are of marine origin, the black strata in particular have °<sup>15</sup>N values that are significantly lower than those previously found in the marine sediment record and most contemporary marine nitrogen pools. In contrast, black, organic-carbon-rich beds at a third site (DSDP Site 603) contain predominantly terrestrial organic matter and have C- and N-isotopic compositions similar to organic matter of modern terrestrial origin.</p><p>The recurring<sup>15</sup>N depletion in the marine-derived Cretaceous sequences prove that the nitrogen they contain is the end result of an episodic and atypical biogeochemistry. Existing isotopic and other data indicate that the low<sup>15</sup>N relative abundance is the consequence of pelagic rather than post-depositional processes. Reduced ocean circulation, increased denitrification, and, hence, reduced euphotic zone nitrate availability may have led to Cretaceous phytoplankton assemblages that were periodically dominated by N<sub>2</sub>-fixing blue-green algae, a possible source of this sediment<sup>15</sup>N-depletion. Lack of parallel isotopic shifts in Cretaceous terrestrially-derived nitrogen (Site 603) argues that the above change in nitrogen cycling during this period did not extend beyond the marine environment.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0012-821X(87)90201-9","issn":"0012821X","usgsCitation":"Rau, G., Arthur, M., and Dean, W., 1987, 15N/14N variations in Cretaceous Atlantic sedimentary sequences: Implication for past changes in marine nitrogen biogeochemistry: Earth and Planetary Science Letters, v. 82, no. 3-4, p. 269-279, https://doi.org/10.1016/0012-821X(87)90201-9.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"269","endPage":"279","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":223870,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"82","issue":"3-4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059e228e4b0c8380cd459e1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Rau, G.H.","contributorId":18112,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Rau","given":"G.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370649,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Arthur, M.A.","contributorId":24791,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Arthur","given":"M.A.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370650,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Dean, W.E.","contributorId":97099,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dean","given":"W.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370651,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

These eruptions display various styles of activity including fumarolic degassing, tephra fountaining, and explosive cratering. The deposits, which occupy the layer 3 stratigraphic position on the top of pyroclastic-flow units, can be distinguished from ash-cloud material by lateral thickness variation, clast composition, and other sedimentary features. The ejecta of secondary hydroeruptions comprise a subset of hydrovolcanic pyroclastic deposits. A small secondary hydroeruption observed on the Mount St. Helens pumice plain in 1981 produced tephra that was emplaced ballistically, by deposition from base surges, and by fallout from an eruption column. Stratigraphic descriptions and grain-size analysis of the ejecta from several secondary craters on the pumice plain demonstrate that the bedforms produced by a hydroeruption change with crater diameter. In particular, craters of small diameter are surrounded by interbedded ripple-laminated ash horizons and nonstratified, fines-depleted units; large craters have ejecta ramparts comprised of coarse dunes and antidunes. These bedform changes are related to a progressive increase in eruptive energy, which produces base surges of greater power and eruptive columns of greater height. We suggest that the style of activity displayed during a secondary hydroeruption is controlled by both the total thermal energy of the system and the permeability of the pyroclastic overburden. ?? 1987.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","issn":"03770273","usgsCitation":"Moyer, T., and Swanson, D.A., 1987, Secondary hydroeruptions in pyroclastic-flow deposits: Examples from Mount St. Helens: Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research, v. 32, no. 4, p. 299-319.","startPage":"299","endPage":"319","numberOfPages":"21","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":223762,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"32","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b891de4b08c986b316d25","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moyer, T.C.","contributorId":74031,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moyer","given":"T.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370630,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Swanson, D. The exponential equation is tested against a wide range of data and is found to adequately describe&nbsp;</span><i>P vs. I</i><span>&nbsp;curves. The errors associated with photosynthetic parameters are calculated. A simplified statistical model (Poisson) of photon capture provides a biophysical basis for the equation and for its ability to fit a range of light intensities. The exponential equation provides a non-subjective simultaneous curve fitting estimate for photosynthetic efficiency (</span><i>a</i><span>) which is less ambiguous than subjective methods: subjective methods assume that a linear region of the&nbsp;</span><i>P vs. I</i><span>&nbsp;curve is readily identifiable. Photosynthetic parameters β and&nbsp;</span><i>a</i><span>&nbsp;are used widely in aquatic studies to define photosynthesis at low quantum flux. These parameters are particularly important in estuarine environments where high suspended-material concentrations and high diffuse-light extinction coefficients are commonly encountered.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0272-7714(87)90154-5","issn":"02727714","usgsCitation":"Peterson, D.H., Perry, M., Bencala, K., and Talbot, M., 1987, Phytoplankton productivity in relation to light intensity: A simple equation: Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, v. 24, no. 6, p. 813-832, https://doi.org/10.1016/0272-7714(87)90154-5.","productDescription":"20 p.","startPage":"813","endPage":"832","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":552,"text":"San Francisco Bay-Delta","active":false,"usgs":true},{"id":5079,"text":"Pacific Regional Director's Office","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":223596,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"24","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a7b3be4b0c8380cd7931e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Peterson, D. S. Geological Survey that show earthquake data of individual states or groups of states at the scale of 1:1,000,000. This map shows only those earthquakes with epicenters located within the boundaries of Pennsylvania, even though earthquakes in nearby states may have been felt or may have caused damage in Pennsylvania.</p><p>The data in table 1 were used to compile the seismicity map; these data are a corrected, expanded, and updated (through 1983) version of the data used by Algermissen (1969) for a study of seismic risk in the United States. The locations and intensities of some earthquakes were revised and intensities were assigned where none had been before. Many earthquakes were added to the original list from new data sources as well as from some old data sources that had not been previously used. The data in table 1 represent best estimates of the location of the epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake on the basis of historical and current information. Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed, but not all, especially for earthquakes that occurred before seismic instruments were universally used.</p><p>The latitude and longitude coordinates of each epicenter were rounded to the nearest tenth of a degree and sorted so that all identical locations were grouped and counted. These locations are represented on the map by a triangle. The number of earthquakes at each location is shown on the map by the arabic number to the right of the triangle. A Roman numeral to the left of a triangle is the maximum Modified Mercalli intensity (Wood and Neumann, 1931) of a11 earthquakes at that geographic location. The absence of an intensity value indicates that no intensities have been assigned to earthquakes at that location. The year shown below each triangle is the latest year for which the maximum intensity was recorded.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Theoretical considerations","docAbstract":"<p>A mathematical model is developed to describe the fate of hydrocarbon constituents of petroleum products introduced to soils as an immiscible liquid from sources such as leaking underground storage tanks and ruptured pipelines. The problem is one of multiphase transport (oil (immiscible), air, and water phases) of a reactive contaminant with constituents such as benzene, toluene, and xylene found in refined petroleum products like gasoline. In the unsaturated zone, transport of each constituent can occur as a solute in the water phase, vapor in the air phase, and as an unaltered constituent in the oil phase. Additionally, the model allows for adsorption. Molecular transformations, microbially mediated or abiotic, are incorporated as sink terms in the conservation of mass equations. An equilibrium approximation, applicable to any immiscible organic contaminant is applied to partition constituent mass between the air, oil, water, and adsorbed phases for points in the region where the oil phase exists. Outside the oil plume the equilibrium approximation takes on a simpler form to partition constituent mass between the air, water, and adsorbed phases only. Microbial degradation of petroleum products is first discussed in a general model, then the conservation of mass equation for oxygen is incorporated into the analysis which takes advantage of the key role played by oxygen in the metabolism of hydrocarbon utilizing microbes in soil environments. Approximations to two subproblems, oil plume establishment in the unsaturated zone, and solute and vapor transport subsequent to immiscible plume establishment are then developed from the general model.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR023i001p00191","usgsCitation":"Corapcioglu, M.Y., and Baehr, A.L., 1987, A compositional multiphase model for groundwater contamination by petroleum products: 1. Based on the forecasts provided by the USGS, the National Weather Service (NWS) included landslide warnings in its regular weather forecasts or in special weather statements transmitted to local radio and television stations and other news media. USGS scientists said the landslide forecasting and warning system for the San Francisco Bay area can be used as a prototype in developing similar systems for other parts of the Nation susceptible to landsliding. Studies show damage from landslides in the United States averages an estimated $1.5 billion per year.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Finley, D., 1987, System designed for issuing landslide alerts in the San Francisco Bay area: Earthquakes & Volcanoes (USGS), v. 19, no. 5, p. 171-173.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"171","endPage":"173","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":314985,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"San Francisco Bay area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -123.03039550781249,\n              38.285624966683756\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.37670898437499,\n              38.57393751557591\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.6021728515625,\n              38.11727165830543\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.56921386718751,\n              37.47921744485059\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.8548583984375,\n              37.19533058280065\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.26684570312499,\n              37.068327517596586\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.4591064453125,\n              37.15156050223665\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.56347656249999,\n              37.50972584293751\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.80517578125,\n              37.87485339352928\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.04687499999999,\n              37.974514992024616\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.134765625,\n              38.225235239076824\n            ],\n            [\n              -123.03039550781249,\n              38.285624966683756\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"19","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56ab49d3e4b07ca61bfea5ed","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Finley, D.","contributorId":152665,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Finley","given":"D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":590090,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

No \"red\" glare could be seen, but a prominent column of white vapor was rising from the crater, and at infrequent emitted. As the boat steamed around the edge of Stromboli, the big \"scar' on the slope, known as Sciara del Fuoco, stood out prominently. This remarkable feature, with a slope of 35 degrees and a width of about three-quarters of a mile, is like a tremendous talus slope and extends from the crater to the sea, a distance of about 4,000 feet. Much of the erupted material, including lava flows ejected from the crater, lands on the Sciara del Fuoco and rolls directly into the sea. The origin of the Sciara del Fuoco is uncertain, but it appears to represent a great depression formed by an eruption which destroyed one side of the cone. The accumulation of debris in the depression has built up the present talus-like slope. The crater of Stromboli is on a terrace at the top of the Sciara del Fuoco, about 600 feet below the summit peak. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Bullard, F., 1987, A visit to Stromboli, lighthouse of the Mediterranean: Earthquakes & Volcanoes (USGS), v. 19, no. 6, p. 199-204.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"199","endPage":"204","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":314654,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Italy","otherGeospatial":"Stromboli","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n 15.216751098632812,\n 38.81456613562004\n ],\n [\n 15.18310546875,\n 38.80011914392429\n ],\n [\n 15.189285278320312,\n 38.77924609533196\n ],\n [\n 15.218811035156248,\n 38.761044092443086\n ],\n [\n 15.23529052734375,\n 38.77282238933892\n ],\n [\n 15.254516601562498,\n 38.801724509895024\n ],\n [\n 15.23529052734375,\n 38.812426025416734\n ],\n [\n 15.216751098632812,\n 38.81456613562004\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"19","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"56a20f41e4b0961cf2811bc3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bullard, F.
