The groups were fed for 9 days and fasted for 10 days in a cross-over design. Blood and urine samples and weight data were collected every 2-3 days during each trial. Hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations, red blood cell (RBC) counts, and hematocrits (HCT) were elevated in both groups during fasting. White blood cell (WBC) counts, serum urea nitrogen (SUN), triiodothyronine (T3), and insulin concentrations decreased during fasting in Groups A and B. Mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), serum cholesterol, triglyceride, and iron (Fe) concentrations were diminished in fasted Group A wolves compared to fed Group B. Creatine phosphokinase (CPK) concentrations were elevated in fed Group A wolves. Serum creatinine (C) concentrations were reduced in both groups during feeding. Urinary urea: creatinine (U:C), potassium:creatine (K:C), and sodium:creatinine (Na:C, pooled Group A and B data) ratios decreased in fasted wolves. Differences were not found between fed and fasted wolves for mean corpuscular volume (MCV), serum cortisol, glucose, calcium (Ca), bilirubin, serum glutamate-oxaloacetate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (SGOT), serum glutamate-pyruvate transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase, and luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), and urinary calcium: creatine (Ca:C) ratios. The cumulative percent survival ranged from 42–59.5% for striped bass larvae after 96 hr of exposure to habitat water during two experiments. Survival in control conditions during these two experiments was 77.5 and 80.5%. Data from previous studies have shown that mortality rates for wild yolk-sac larvae ranged from 7–19% per day. Daily mortality of larvae in the present study was 13–16%; therefore, suspected acutely harmful water quality or contaminant conditions affecting survival were not substantiated. All yearling striped bass survived 10 days of exposure to habitat water. Although habitat water was not acutely toxic, histological examination of surviving yearling striped bass indicated sublethal effects. Telangiectases (lamellar dilations) of the gills was reported for yearlings exposed to habitat water. Droughts cause severe water supply problems and water rationing is required, even during periods of normal rainfall. The Laura area contains a substantial lens of fresh groundwater that could be developed for export to the DUD area 30 mi to the east. Study of the groundwater resource at Laura involved a survey of existing wells, installation of monitoring wells and test holes, compilation of continuous records of rainfall and water level fluctuations, and collection of water quality data. Test hole data permitted the definition of three geohydrologic units which correlate well with similar units in Bikini and Enewetak atolls. The units consist of two layers of unconsolidated reef and lagoon sediments resting on a dense, highly permeable limestone. The potable water zone, or freshwater nucleus, of the lens is contained mostly within the unconsolidated layers, which are much less permeable than the basal limestone. Recharge to the Laura freshwater lens is estimated to be 1.8 mil gal/day, based on an average annual rainfall of 140 in. Sustainable yield is estimated to be about 400,000 gal/day. Shallow skimming wells or infiltration galleries similar to those used on Kwajalein atoll would be appropriate to develop the freshwater lens. The impact of development on the lens can be determined by monitoring the salinity in developed water and in a network of monitor wells.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri874047","usgsCitation":"Hamlin, S.N., and Anthony, S.S., 1987, Ground-water resources of the Laura area, Majuro Atoll, Marshall Islands: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 87-4047, vi, 69 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri874047.","productDescription":"vi, 69 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":415606,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_49216.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":56338,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4047/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124185,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1987/4047/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Republic of the Marshall Islands","otherGeospatial":"Laura area, Majuro Atoll","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              171.045,\n              7.1667\n            ],\n            [\n              171.023,\n              7.1667\n            ],\n            [\n              171.023,\n              7.133\n            ],\n            [\n              171.045,\n              7.133\n            ],\n            [\n              171.045,\n              7.1667\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a96e4b07f02db65a80d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hamlin, S. The discovery of the whale gouges in the sonar records was unexpected, and supports some of the previous speculation that gray whales feed opportunistically during migration. Gouges occupy about 0.032% of the 7.6 km2 of sea floor that was surveyed, which represents about 575 metric tons of excavated material. Although seemingly minor in amount, the total amount of bottom sediment removed from the central and northern California continental shelf by gray whale activities year after year represents macroscale biologically induced erosion and could have significant geological implications in shelf erosion and depositional schemes. Searches for dead birds were made at least twice weekly during each migration period. Study sites were selected to include 'worst-case' situations involving potentially large concentrations of birds.In total, 633 dead birds were found beneath 9.6 km of power lines. About 81% of the birds were found during fall migration. Removal of birds by scavengers was of minor, although local, importance, and observer error in finding birds was greatest in areas of dense vegetation. Total kill was estimated at 1,332 birds.Data were gathered on more than 7,000 bird flights observed in the vicinity of the power lines. Sixty-eight percent of the birds did not respond to the presence of the power lines. Flaring and climbing over the conductor or overhead ground wire occurred in about 25% of the flights. One hundred nine birds in 82 flocks were observed to collide with a power line. Of these birds, 87% flared to climb over the power line before colliding. The overhead ground wire was responsible for most deaths, as 102 of 109 birds collided with it.Whereas none of the mortality observed was considered to be biologically significant at the particular sites examined, the cumulative effect of mortality sustained from collisions with power lines may be important, particularly to populations of rare or endangered birds.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","publisherLocation":"Washington, DC","usgsCitation":"Faanes, C.A., 1987, Bird behavior and mortality in relation to power lines in prairie habitats: Technical Report 7.","costCenters":[{"id":480,"text":"Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198486,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":112253,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTRDoc?Location=U2&doc=GetTRDoc.pdf&AD=ADA322514","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2fe4b07f02db616478","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Faanes, C. The model was calibrated using unsteady concentrations of organic nitrogen, ammonia, and nitrite plus nitrate obtained during June 1977 and verified using data obtained during August 1976. Reaction kinetics of the cascade type are shown to provide a reasonable description of the nitrogenspecies processes in the Chattahoochee River. The conceptual model is easy to visualize in the physical sense and the output includes information that is not easily determined from an Eulerian approach, but which is very helpful in model calibration and data interpretation. For example, the model output allows one to determine which data are of most value in model calibration or verification.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"ASCE","doi":"10.1061/(ASCE)0733-9372(1987)113:2(223)","issn":"07339372","usgsCitation":"Jobson, H., 1987, Langrangian model of nitrogen kinetics in the Chattahoochee River: Journal of Environmental Engineering, v. 113, no. 2, p. 223-242, https://doi.org/10.1061/(ASCE)0733-9372(1987)113:2(223).","productDescription":"20 p.","startPage":"223","endPage":"242","numberOfPages":"20","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":225451,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"113","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a446ee4b0c8380cd66ad5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Jobson, H.E.","contributorId":44952,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jobson","given":"H.E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":368528,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The carbon dioxide has accumulated in a dome that is located on the extension of a linear chain of volcanic activity. A magmatic origin for the fluid is suggested by the geological setting, δ<sup>13</sup>C<sub>PDB</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>of –4.0‰, for the CO<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>(where PDB represents the carbon-isotope standard), and a relatively high<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>3</sup>He component of the contained helium and high<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>3</sup>He/C ratio (6.4 x 10<sup>−10</sup>). The<span>&nbsp;</span><sup>3</sup>He/<sup>4</sup>He and He/Ne ratios are 3.0 and &gt; 1,370 times those of air, respectively. The CO<sub>2</sub>, as collected at the Earth's surface at 29.5 °C and 75 bar, expands more than 300-fold to form a gas at 1 atm and 22 °C. We suggest that liquid CO<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>or high-density CO<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>fluid (the critical point is 31.1 °C, 73.9 bar) of volcanic origin that expands explosively from shallow levels in the Earth's crust may be a major contributor to 'phreatic' volcanic eruptions and maar formation. Less violent release of magmatic CO<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>into crater lakes may cause gas bursts with equally disastrous consequences such as occurred at Lake Nyos, Cameroon, in August 1986.</p></div></div>","language":"English","publisher":"Nature Publishing Group ","doi":"10.1038/326587a0","issn":"00280836","usgsCitation":"Chivas, A., Barnes, I., Evans, W.C., Lupton, J., and Stone, J., 1987, Liquid carbon dioxide of magmatic origin and its role in volcanic eruptions: Nature, v. 326, no. 6113, p. 587-589, https://doi.org/10.1038/326587a0.","productDescription":"3 p. On two such projections, inside a circle bounding the region of interest is a standard Azimuthal Equidistant or Lambert Azimuthal Equal-Area projection. Between this circle and an outer bounding circle azimuths remain true and the radial or area scale, respectively, remains constant, but at a reduced value. True color aerial photos and collateral ground survey information for submersed aquatic macrophyte beds at 10 sites in the St.Clair-Detroit River system were obtained in September 1978. Using the photos and collateral ground survey information, a dichotomous key was developed for the identification of six classes - beds of five genera of macrophytes and one substrate type. A test was prepared to determine how accurately photo interpreters could identify the six classes. The test required an interpreter to examine an unlabeled, outlined area on photographs and identify it using the key. Six interpreters were tested. One pair of interpreters was trained in the interpretation of a variety of aerial photos, a second pair had field experience in the collection and identification of submersed macrophytes in the river system, and a third pair had neither training in the interpretation of aerial photos nor field experience. The criteria that we developed were applied equally well by the interpretors, regardless of their training or experience. Overall accuracy (i.e., omission errors) of all six classes combined was 68% correct, whereas, overall accuracy of individual classes ranged from 50 to 100% correct. Mapping accuracy (i.e. omission and commission errors) of individual classes ranged from 36 to 75%. Although the key developed for this study has only limited application outside the context of the data and sites examined in this study, it is concluded that low-altitude aerial photography, together with limited amounts of collateral ground survey information, can be used to economically identify beds of submersed macrophytes in the St. Clair-Detroit River system and other similar water bodies.</span></p>","largerWorkType":{"id":24,"text":"Conference Paper"},"largerWorkTitle":"Color aerial photography in the plant sciences and related fields : proceedings of the Tenth Biennial Workshop on Color Aerial Photography in the Plant Sciences","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":19,"text":"Conference Paper"},"conferenceTitle":"Tenth Biennial Workshop on Color Aerial Photography in the Plant Sciences","conferenceDate":"May 21-24, 1985","conferenceLocation":"Ann Arbor, MI","language":"English","publisher":"American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing","usgsCitation":"Schloesser, D.W., Manny, B.A., Brown, C.L., and Jaworski, E., 1987, Use of low-altitude aerial photography to identify submersed aquatic macrophytes, <i>in</i> Color aerial photography in the plant sciences and related fields : proceedings of the Tenth Biennial Workshop on Color Aerial Photography in the Plant Sciences, Ann Arbor, MI, May 21-24, 1985, p. 19-28.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"19","endPage":"28","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":321638,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5746ccc7e4b07e28b662dd71","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schloesser, Donald W. dschloesser@usgs.gov","contributorId":3579,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schloesser","given":"Donald","email":"dschloesser@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":630197,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Manny, Bruce A. 0000-0002-4074-9329 bmanny@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4074-9329","contributorId":3699,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Manny","given":"Bruce","email":"bmanny@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":630198,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Brown, Charles L.","contributorId":102421,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Brown","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630199,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Jaworski, Eugene","contributorId":103767,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jaworski","given":"Eugene","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":630200,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":4}]}}

The extensive coastal areas of the Great Lakes and proximity to large populations resulted in fishing pressure on planted lake trout heavy enough to push annual mortality associated with sport and commercial fisheries well above the critical level needed to reestablish self-sustaining stocks. The interagency, international program for rehabilitating lake trout includes controlling sea lamprey abundance, stocking hatchery-reared lake trout, managing the catch, and establishing sanctuaries where harvest is prohibited. Three lake trout sanctuaries have been established in Lake Michigan: the Fox Island Sanctuary of 121, 500 ha, in the Chippewa-Ottawa Treaty fishing zone in the northern region of the lake; the Milwaukee Reef Sanctuary of 160, 000 ha in midlake, in boundary waters of Michigan and Wisconsin; and Julian's Reef Sanctuary&nbsp;of 6, 500 ha, in Illinois waters. In northern Lake Huron, Drummond Island Sanctuary of 55, 000 ha is two thirds in Indian treaty-ceded waters in Michigan and one third in Ontario waters of Canada. A second sanctuary, Six Fathom Bank-Yankee Reef Sanctuary, in central Lake Huron contains 168, 000 ha. Sanctuary status for the Canadian areas remains to be approved by the Provincial government. In Lake Superior, sanctuaries protect the spawning grounds of Gull Island Shoal (70, 000 ha) and Devils Island Shoal (44, 000 ha) in Wisconsin's Apostle Island area. The population decline of bloaters in recent decades was mainly attributed to exploitation, to the depression of chub recruitment (e.g. from inferred predation on early life stage) by nonendemic alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) and rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax), and to complications arising from extreme female predominance that was best documented for Lake Michigan. The various interactions between bloaters and the nonendemic species, which were intensified after the loss of large predators to sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), would help to explain why a stock-recruitment relation was not shown for the Lake Michigan bloater. We hypothesize that reproductive inefficiency caused by a shift to strong female predominance in the bloater depresses recruitment and thus helps to regulate abundance. However, the low resilience that sex imbalance seems to impart makes the stock unstable when exploited. It should therefore be exploited conservatively during such periods. Also, the sex ratio and its direction of change appear to be important qualifiers when surplus production is estimated from stock size.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"NRC Research Press","doi":"10.1139/f87-338","usgsCitation":"Brown, E.H., Argyle, R.L., Payne, N.R., and Holey, M.E., 1987, Yield and dynamics of destabilized chub (<i>Coregonus</i> spp.) populations in Lakes Michigan and Huron, 1950-84: Canadian Journal of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, v. 44, no. In riparian zones precise location of optimum habitat is difficult to determine as is definition of habitat within the continuum from shoreline to upland areas. The ecological importance of the riparian group appears to lie in its processing of coarse particulate matter along the floodplain of streams and rivers. As Fox and others (1985) poin ted out, however, several of the volcanic centers that are older than 15 m.y. do not fit a simple model of northwestward-migrating volcanism. In the following comments, I offer additional information on the ages and locations of volcanic rocks in west-central California and then briefly discuss the revised data set and its implications for the late Oligocene and early Miocene history of the San Andreas transform. My purpose is to suggest that the sequential northwestward-migrating volcanism documented by Fox a nd others (1985) was preceded by an episode of nearly synchronous volcanism that occurred throughout west-central California about 22-24 m.y. ago. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1987)98<612:IOTNYA>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Stanley, R.G., 1987, Implications of the northwestwardly younger age of the volcanic rocks of west-central California: Alternative Interpretation: GSA Bulletin, v. 98, no. 5, p. 612-614, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1987)98<612:IOTNYA>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"612","endPage":"614","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":354999,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"98","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5c113532e4b034bf6a8279aa","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Stanley, Richard G. 0000-0001-6192-8783 rstanley@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6192-8783","contributorId":1832,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Stanley","given":"Richard","email":"rstanley@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"G.","affiliations":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":737882,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Bloaters were collected from southern Lake Michigan and were frozen for periods of 2-200 d. Freezing in water caused a significant decrease in length and a significant increase in weight. These changes did not vary predictably with time. The mean change in weight was greater for adults than for juveniles, but the mean change in length was not significantly different between juveniles and adults. Regressions for weight or length after freezing versus weight or length before freezing were highly significant and can be used as correction equations for estimating the original lengths and weights of fresh specimens after fish have been frozen. Test fish that were subsequently refrozen in air shrank more than those refrozen in water.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1987)7<299:EOFIAO>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Sayers, R., 1987, Effects of freezing in and out of water on length and weight of Lake Michigan bloaters: North American Journal of Fisheries Management, v. 7, no. 2, p. 299-301, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1987)7<299:EOFIAO>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"3 p.","startPage":"299","endPage":"301","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":128701,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"7","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2ee4b07f02db6153d3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Sayers, Richard E.","contributorId":56592,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Sayers","given":"Richard E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308778,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
