Studies are now in progress in Austin, Houston, and San Antonio.

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the city of Houston, began studies in the Houston metropolitan area in 1964. The program was expanded in 1968 to include collection of water-quality data. The objectives of the Houston urban-hydrology study are as follows:

To determine, on the basis of historical data and hydro!ogic analyses, the magnitude and frequency of flood peaks and flood volumes.

To determine the effect of urban development on flood peaks and volumes.

To ascertain the variation in water quality for different flow conditions and different seasons.

This report, the sixteenth in a series of reports to be published annually, is primarily applicable to objective 2. The report presents hydro!ogic data collected in the Houston urban area for the 1979 water year (October 1, 1978 to September 30, 1979).

A report by Johnson and Sayre (1973) utilized records collected from 1965 to 1969 to make a study of the effects of urbanization on floods in the Houston area. The report also summarizes various basin parameters. A report by Waddell, Massey, and Jennings (1979) presents data on computed runoff from the Houston area and computed concentrations and loads of selected waterquality constituents combined in the inflow to Galveston Bay. The study utilized a variation of the \"STORM\" model developed by the Hydro!ogic Engineering Center of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. A report prepared by Li scum and Massey (1980) presents a technique for estimating the magnitude and frequency of floods in the Houston area from drainage areas, bank-full conveyance, and percentage of urban development.

A definition of terms related to streamflow, water quality, and other hydrologic data, as used in this report, are defined in \"U.S. Geological Survey, Water-resources data for Texas, volume 2, 1979.\"

To facilitate the publication and distribution of this report at the earliest feasible time, some material has been included that does not conform to the formal publications standards of the U.S. Geological Survey.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82164","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Average water levels and average base flow discharge (4.9 cu ft/s) of the Big Sioux River were based on data from 1970 through 1979. The computer model was calibrated for transient conditions by simulating monthly historic conditions for 1976. During 1976, pumpage was offset mostly by surface-water recharge to the aquifer from January through June and ground-water discharge from storage from July through December. Measured drawdowns during 1976 generally were less than 2 feet except in the Sioux Falls city well field where drawdowns were as much as 15 feet. The model was used to study the effects of increased withdrawals under three hypothetical hydrologic situations. One hypothetical situation consisted of using 1976 pumping rates, recharge, and evapotranspiration but the Big Sioux River dry. The pumping rate after 16 months was decreased by 40 percent from the actual pumping rate for that month in order to complete the monthly simulation without the storage being depleted at a nodal area. The second hypothetical situation consisted of a pumpage rate of 44.4 cubic feet per second from 60 wells spaced throughout the aquifer under historic 1976 hydrologic conditions. The results were that the aquifer could supply the additional withdrawal. The third hypothetical situation used the same hydrologic conditions as the second except that recharge was zero and the Big Sioux River was dry downstream from row 54. After 18 monthly simulations, the pumping rate was decreased by 44 percent to prevent pumping wells from depleting the aquifer, and, at that rate, 63 percent of the water being pumped was being replaced by water from the river. The sites represent the complete ranges of hydrologic and geologic conditions found in the basin. The data were analyzed by computer to yield equations relating various discharge characteristics to variables of channel geometry and bed and bank material. The equations provide discharge as the dependent variable for the purpose of making estimates of discharge characteristics at ungaged sites. Results show that channel width is best related to variables of discharge, but that reduction of standard errors can be achieved by considering channel-sediment properties, channel gradient, and discharge variability. The channel-material variables do not exert uniform effects on width-discharge relations and, therefore, are considered as sediment-data groups, or stream types, rather than as terms in multiple power-function equations. Relative to streamflow, narrowest channels occur when streams of steady discharge transport sufficient silt and clay to form stable, cohesive banks but have a small tractive load of sand and coarser sizes. Stable channels also are associated with high channel gradients, which cause high channel roughness and bed and bank armouring by coarse particle sizes. The widest, most unstable channels are found with streams that apparently transport of large tractive load of sand sizes. The downstream rates of change of width with discharge reflect these trends, suggesting that a given bed-material load necessitates a minimum width over which the tractive material can be moved.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1242","usgsCitation":"Osterkamp, W.R., and Hedman, E.R., 1982, Perennial-streamflow characteristics related to channel geometry and sediment in Missouri River basin: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1242, 37 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1242.","productDescription":"37 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":408768,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74500.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":65350,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1242/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":123419,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1242/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Missouri River basin","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -114,\n 49\n ],\n [\n -114,\n 37\n ],\n [\n -80,\n 37\n ],\n [\n -80,\n 49\n ],\n [\n -114,\n 49\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db687e36","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Osterkamp, W. Infiltration of the sewage through the sand beds into the underlying unconfined sand and gravel aquifer has resulted in a plume of sewage-contaminated ground water that is 2,500 to 3,500 feet wide, 75 feet wide, and more than 11,000 feet long. The plume extends south and southwest of the sand beds in the same direction as the regional flow of around water, and is overlain by 20 to 50 feet of ground water derived from precipitation that recharges the aquifer. The bottom of the plume generally coincides with the contact between the permeable sand and gravel and underlying finer grained sediments.

The distributions in the aquifer of specific conductance, temperature, boron, chloride, sodium, phosphorus, nitrogen (total of all species), ammonia, nitrate, dissolved oxygen, and detergents are used to delineate the plume. In ground water outside the plume, the detergent concentration is less than 0.1 milligrams per liter as MBAS (methylene blue active substances), the ammonia-nitrogen concentration is less than 0.1 milligrams per liter, the boron concentration is less than 50 micrograms per liter, and specific conductance is less than 80 micromhos per centimeter. In the center of the plume, detergent concentrations as high as 2.6 milligrams per liter as MBAS, ammonia-nitrogen concentrations as high as 20 milligrams per liter, boron concentrations as high as 400 micrograms per liter, and specific conductance as high as 405 micromhos per centimeter were measured.

Chloride, sodium, and boron are transported by the southward-flowing ground water without significant retardation, and seem to be diluted only by hydrodynamic dispersion. The movement of phosphorus is greatly restricted by sorption. Phosphorus concentrations do not exceed 0.05 milligrams per liter farther than 2,500 feet from the sand beds. Detergent concentrations in the plume are highest between 3,000 and 10,000 feet from the sand beds and reflect the introduction of nonbiodegradable detergents in 1946 and the conversion to biodegradable detergents in 1964.

The center of the plume as far as 5,000 feet from the sand beds contains nitrogen as ammonia, but no nitrate and no dissolved oxygen. Ammonia is gradually oxidized to nitrate between 5,000 and 8,000 feet from the sand beds, and at distances greater than 8,000 feet oxidation of ammonia is essentially complete. Ammonia also is oxidized to nitrate along the top and sides of the plume within 5,000 feet of the beds where the contaminated ground water mixes with uncontaminated ground water that contains up to 11 milligrams per liter dissolved oxygen.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82274","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Quality Engineering, Division of Water Pollution Patrol","usgsCitation":"LeBlanc, D., 1982, Sewage plume in a sand and gravel aquifer, Cape Cod, Massachusetts: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-274, iv, 35 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82274.","productDescription":"iv, 35 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405420,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0274/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143337,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0274/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Massachusetts","otherGeospatial":"Cape Cod","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -70.48278808593749,\n              41.61749568924243\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.9114990234375,\n              41.61749568924243\n            ],\n            [\n              -69.9114990234375,\n              42.120635949743644\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.48278808593749,\n              42.120635949743644\n            ],\n            [\n              -70.48278808593749,\n              41.61749568924243\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fbe4b07f02db5f4b14","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"LeBlanc, Denis","contributorId":11363,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"LeBlanc","given":"Denis","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160598,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Using these at-a-station relations as a base, regional relations were then developed that characterize hydraulic features of streams throughout the study area. Channel size is an indication of flow magnitude. High flows affect channel formation, and the annual peak-flow array is a representation of these flows. The geometric mean of this array is a viable statistical index of channel-forming flows because it represents the relative magnitude of high flows at a site. Bankfull discharge is a physical index of flows dominating channel formation. The magnitude of the geometric mean approximately equates to bankfull discharge, on the average. Relations depicting hydraulic characteristics of a discharge equal to the geometric mean of annual peak flows may, therefore, be considered to be generally representative of channel conditions existing during bankfull discharge. The relations have application for predicting channel response to developments that would alter streamflow. Several simple analytical solutions, a typecurve-matching procedure, and a Galerkin finite-element radial-flow model were used to determine hydraulic conductivity, ratio of horizontal to vertical hydraulic conductivity, and specific yield. Results of the curve-matching procedure covered a broad range of values that could be narrowed through consideration of data from other sources such as published reports, drillers ' logs, or values determined by analytical solutions. Analysis by the radial-flow model was preferred because it allows for vertical variability in aquifer properties and solves the system for all observation points simultaneously, whereas the other techniques treat the aquifer as homogeneous and must treat each observation well separately. All methods produced fairly consistent results. The ranges of aquifer values at the three sites were: horizontal hydraulic conductivity, 140 to 380 feet per day; transmissivity 11,200 to 17,100 feet squared per day; ratio of horizontal to vertical hydraulic conductivity 2.4:1 to 7:1, and specific yield , 0.13 to 0.23. Regional ground-water flow is from west to east in the Ogallala Formation, and the concentration of dissolved solids in ground water increases in the direction of flow. This increase may be influenced by residence time, but underlying bedrock appears to control ground-water chemistry. The Ogallala Formation is underlain by Mesozoic rocks in the west and Permian rocks in the east. Mean concentration of dissolved solids in ground water from the Mesozoic rocks is 552 milligrams per liter and Permian rocks is 4,720 milligrams per liter. Mean concentration of dissolved solids for water in the Ogallala Formation is 396 milligrams per liter where it overlies Mesozoic rocks and 569 milligrams per liter where it overlies Permian rocks. Del sulfur-34 sulfate values range from a high of +6.9 parts per thousand to a low of -25.1 parts per thousand. Sulfate increases from about 20 milligrams per liter to more than 350 milligrams per liter from west to east. The water-level declines are the result of increases in municipal pumping since July 1978. The increase in municipal pumping was part of a basin-testing program to determine the usable quantity of ground water in storage. The pumping, centered in the city less than 1 mile from the coast, has caused water-level declines in the main water-bearing zones to altitudes below sea level. Consequently, the ground-water basin is threatened with saltwater intrusion if the present pumpage is maintained or increased.

Data indicate that saltwater intrusion has degraded the quality of water yielded from six coastal wells. Chloride concentrations in the most recent samples from coastal wells ranged from about 250 to 3,800 milligrams per liter. Four of the wells yielded water with chloride concentrations in excess of 1,000 milligrams per liter.

Previous investigators believed that saltwater intrusion was limited to the shallow part of the aquifer directly adjacent to the coast. The possibility of saltwater intrusion into the deeper water-bearing deposits in the aquifer was thought to be remote because an offshore fault truncates these deeper deposits against consolidated rocks on the seaward side of the fault. Results of this study indicate, however, that ocean water has intruded into the deeper water-bearing deposits to a much greater extent than in the shallow part of the aquifer. Apparently the offshore fault is not an effective barrier to saltwater intrusion.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr82366","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the City of Santa Barbara","usgsCitation":"Martin, P., 1982, Ground-water monitoring at Santa Barbara, California; Phase 2-effects of pumping on water levels and water quality in the Santa Barbara ground-water basins: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-366, v, 53 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82366.","productDescription":"v, 53 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405489,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0366/repport.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":143062,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0366/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","city":"Santa Barbara","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.77294921874999,\n              34.38877925439021\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.64111328125,\n              34.38877925439021\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.64111328125,\n              34.447688696497444\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.77294921874999,\n              34.447688696497444\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.77294921874999,\n              34.38877925439021\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db66743f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Martin, Peter pmmartin@usgs.gov","contributorId":799,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Martin","given":"Peter","email":"pmmartin@usgs.gov","affiliations":[{"id":154,"text":"California Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":160963,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
