Water-data users now have access to computerized data files containing unpublished, unverified hydrologic data. Therefore, it is necessary to develop techniques and systems whereby the computer can perform some data-verification functions before the data are stored in user-accessible files. Computerized data-verification routines can be developed for this purpose. A single, unified concept describing master data-verification program using multiple special-purpose subroutines, and a screen file containing verification criteria, can probably be adapted to any type and size of computer-processing system. Some traditional manual-verification procedures can be adapted for computerized verification, but new procedures can also be developed that would take advantage of the powerful statistical tools and data-handling procedures available to the computer. Prototype data-verification systems should be developed for all three data-processing environments as soon as possible. The WATSTORE system probably affords the greatest opportunity for long-range research and testing of new verification subroutines. Previous studies indicated that the glacial deposits on the east side of the valley had the potential for producing the large quantities of water needed for a community water supply. The drilling defined an upper aquifer between the water table and a depth of 215 feet and a lower aquifer below 252 feet. The testing did not define the storage coefficient or transmissivity of the upper aquifer. Drawdowns within 20 feet of the test well were less than 12 feet when the pumping rate was 300 gallons per minute. Greater pumping rates could be sustained in larger diameter wells having larger screened intervals in the upper aquifer but would produce greater drawdowns. The performance of the lower aquifer was not tested. Water in the upper aquifer is of adequate quality for drinking water, but may require treatment for iron; water from the lower aquifer is brackish. This application was novel in the consideration of winter discharge records for the period of backwater effects due to ice. The current level of operation in Maine was identified as requiring a budget of $195,000 and having a total uncertainty of 374 cubic feet per second. Stream-gaging strategies were identified that could reduce the level of uncertainty in the system by as much as 45.8%, assuming the budgetary level remained constant. Alternately, practical stream-gaging strategies were also indentified that could reduce the total level of funding by as much as 19.2%, assuming the current level of uncertainty was deemed acceptable. Several alternatives of concurent budgeting and levels of uncertainty were identified. These relationships provide flexibility to the network manager. The results, documented in the report, were based on a sparse data base and should be applied in that context. Estimates of VMAX were found to be sensitive to estimates of the supply of water available from the oil-shale aquifers. For example, the current estimate of average natural recharge to the oil-shale aquifers is approximately equal to the amount of water required by an oil-shale industry producing 250,000 barrels of oil per day and requiring 3 barrels of water per barrel of shale-oil produced. Estimates of VMAX were also sensitive to estimates of the supply of water available from the Colorado River and the requirements for downstream releases on the White River. The sensitivity of VMAX to use of water from the four main streams in the Piceance basin (Parachute, Roan, Piceance, and Yellow Creeks) was less than its sensitivity to these factors. Compared to the uncertainty in other factors, water-supply estimates are shown to be insensitive to uncertainty in evaporation estimates. A transient analysis was performed using a synthetic streamflow model to generate 500 equally likely periods of monthly inflows to the hypothetical reservoir. An oil-shale industry was assumed to expand from 0 to 1 million barrels of oil per day over a 30-year time period, and mine water was assumed to be available at an increasing rate that averaged one-half the current estimated natural recharge rate to the Piceance basin. Use of this mine water to supply part of the water demand resulted in reductions in surface-storage requirements (VMAX) on the order of 15-20 thousand acre-ft over many of the 500 streamflow sequences. In many areas these new maps differ significantly from the 1976 probabilistic acceleration map by Algermlssen and Perkins because of the increase in detail, resulting from greater emphasis on the geologic basis for seismic source zones. This new emphasis is possible because of extensive data recently acquired on Holocene and Quaternary faulting in the western United States and new interpretations of geologic structures controlling the seismicity pattern in the central and eastern United States. During the period August 24-31, 1981, hydrologic data consisting of channel characteristics and stream discharge were collected at 18 sites, and water and channel bottom material samples were collected at 15 sites on small streams draining potential lignite mining areas in east-central Mississippi. Main channel widths ranged from 100 feet on Mill Creek near Louisville to 30 feet on Spring Creek near Bond. Maximum water depths varied from 12.5 feet on Pawticfaw Creek to 0.2 foot on Beasha Creek. Three sites had no discharge. Specific conductance ranged from 100 micromhos on Lonsilocher Canal near Philadelphia to 24 micromhos on Jofuska Creek near Arlington. Water temperatures varied from 22.5 to 26 degrees Celsius. The highest pH was 7.6 on Fulton and Lonsilocher Canals. The dissolved oxygen concentration was 3.8 milligrams per liter or higher at all sites. Channel bottom-material samples commonly contained iron, manganese, and zinc. Some of the analytical procedures yield determinations for specific compounds, whereas others provide a measure of the quantity of groups of compounds present in the sample. Examples of the first category are procedures for the organochlorine and organophosphate insecticides, chlorophenoxy acid and triazine herbicides and specific substituted phenols. Examples of the second category are the various organic carbon analyses and the polychlorinated biphenyl methods. Each analytical method is presented in a standardized format which includes conditions for application of the method, a summary of the method, interferences, required apparatus and reagents, analytical procedures, calculations, reporting of results, and estimation of precision.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr821004","usgsCitation":"1982, Methods for the determination of organic substances in water and fluvial sediments, USGS TWRI, Book 5, Laboratory analysis, Chapter A3: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-1004, vii, 173 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr821004.","productDescription":"vii, 173 p.","numberOfPages":"185","costCenters":[{"id":452,"text":"National Water Quality Laboratory","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":146426,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1004/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":359249,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1004/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a53e4b07f02db62bad6","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Wershaw, Robert L. rwershaw@usgs.gov","contributorId":4856,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wershaw","given":"Robert","email":"rwershaw@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":true,"id":725467,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fishman, Marvin J.","contributorId":87110,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Fishman","given":"Marvin J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":725468,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Grabbe, R. One set was made in 1977, a relatively dry year, and the other set was made in 1980, another relatively dry year. The map shows that the potentiometric surface was higher in 1980, by as much as 9 feet, than it was in 1977, in a band a few miles wide near the outcrop and subcrop areas of the aquifer in northern Prince Georges County and central Anne Arundel County. In the remainder of the map area, the 1980 potentiometric surface was lower than it had been in 1977, with declines as great as 20 feet measured in well fields at Waldorf and Chalk Point. The network of observation wells was developed and is operated and maintained as part of the cooperative program between the U.S. Geological Survey and agencies of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
