Zn and Cd concentrations in tissue show a high negative correlation to each other, whereas Zn and Pb in tissue and shell show a high positive correlation to one another. Sediment contents of Pb and Zn best reflect tissue values of the heavy metals; sediment concentrations of Cd and Cu show a poor inverse correlation to tissue concentrations. Analysis of variance indicated that 10% or more of the total variation in aluminum, arsenic, cobalt, iron, nickel, selenium, and zinc concentrations on streambed materials was accounted for by differences in land use. Concentrations of aluminum, cobalt, iron, nickel, selenium, and zinc on streambed materials smaller than 0.062-millimeter from mined watersheds were significantly greater than the concentrations of these elements on streambed materials from agricultural and forested watersheds. It consists mainly of alternating beds of fluvial sandstone and overbank mudstone with sandstone dominating in the lower part of the formation and mudstone in the upper part. At the outcrop, the sandstones in the formation exhibit almost all the characteristics that are considered favorable for the occurrence of sandstone-type uranium deposits, but only a few small deposits have been discovered in the Colorado-Utah area. The major deficiency of the Burro Canyon in these outcrop areas is the absence of a reductant such as carbonaceous debris, humic or humate materials, or pyrite. Reductants were probably removed during a period of extensive oxidation at the time of deposition and during a subsequent erosional episode prior to deposition of the Dakota Sandstone. \r\n\r\nThe formation reaches a lobate, inexactly located eastern margin that extends from near Meeker, Colorado, southward through the Piceance basin to near Aztec, New Mexico, in the northwestern part of the San Juan Basin. Along much of this distance, the formation is in the subsurface and has been penetrated by only a few drill holes. Along this eastern margin, the lobes project eastward where fluvial distributary streams built minor alluvial fans of relatively high-energy deposits out from the main axis of Burro Canyon stream deposition. The lower and distal reaches of these lobes may have survived the period of post depositional erosion and oxidation in a reduced condition because of low relief and the protection of a high water table. If so, the peripheral and distal parts of these lobes may have retained the precipitants necessary to form a uranium deposit. Two of the lobes extend into the southwest margin of the Piceance Basin and are considered the possible location of uranium deposits. Streamflow was measured and water samples collected at a site upstream from the mouth from June 1979 to June 1980 during base flow and storm periods to evaluate sediment discharges. An additional site on a tributary draining mostly farmland was sampled from December 1979 to June 1980. Samples were analyzed for suspended sediment, turbidity, and specific conductance. Daily mean suspended-sediment concentrations and discharges were computed.</p>\n<p>From June 1979 to June 1980, 3,570 tons of suspended sediment was transported from the basin. This was an average yield of 121 tons per square mile per year. From December 1979 to June 1980, a tributary draining 2.21 square miles of a predominantly agricultural area discharged 328 tons of sediment which was 12 percent of the sediment load transported from the entire basin.</p>\n<p>Monthly sediment discharges averaged 298 tons ranged from 32 tons in July to 1,250 tons in March. The highest daily mean suspended-sediment concentration was 712 milligrams per liter on June 8, 1980. There has been some reluctance to adopt these systems in operational programmes because of a lack of assured continuity of data collection, continuing changes in the systems, and some dissatisfaction with the types of data made available to users. Nevertheless, there is sufficient conviction of the value of satellite remote sensing so that new systems will be developed by several countries in the decade of the 1980's. The status changes continuously as studies are completed, and budgets are adjusted.
