All the reservoirs had distinct thermal gradients but lacked true stratification as a result of circulation induced by wind. Such mixing helps prevent oxygen depletion in bottom waters during the summer. The smallest dissolved-oxygen concentrations occurred in the near-bottom water of the reservoirs and during the night. Nighttime dissolved-oxygen concentrations in reservoirs 19 and 24 were much less than in reservoirs 1 and 9. Similar trends occurred with pH. Most chemical constituents in the water generally became more concentrated from May to August because of continuous water losses from evapotranspiration. This was noted by increase in the concentration of major dissolved constituents and by increase in specific conductance. All the reservoirs contained similar types of planktonic organisms, but in different proportions. Most of the fecal bacteria existing in the reservoirs presumably originated from livestock and waterfowl waste. The survey involved collecting 196 heavy-mineral (panned) concentrates from stream sediment (the basis for these maps and the chief basis for the interpretations), the same number of sieved stream-sediment samples, and 25 samples of fresh, altered, or mineralized rocks. A broad regional geochemical framework for mineral resource evaluation was established by sampling a few miles beyond the boundaries of the WSA to include all of the Chuckwalla and Little Chuckwalla Mountains. These geochemical maps are therefore regional maps but of sufficient detail to allow valid conclusions about geochemical anomalies in the WSA.
\n
The geochemical data were evaluated in three phases: (1) determining enrichment above background amounts for ore-forming and pathfinder (ore-associated) elements; (2) determining the dispersion patterns of the anomalous elements; and (3) relating the dispersion patterns to geologic environments favorable to ore deposition.
\n
This report discusses and interprets geochemical results as they are seen at the reconnaissance stage. The report, done in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources (PaDER), Bureau of State Parks, presents information on existing water-quality conditions. A discussion of possible water-quality conditions in and downstream from the planned impoundment is also included.
\n
Precipitation measured near the study area at Lebanon, Pennsylvania from October 1981 through September 1982 was 8 percent below normal. Streamflow for the same period at Swatara Creek at Harper Tavern just downstream from the study area was 15 percent below the average annual flow. Swatara Creek above Highway 895 has been degraded by acid mine drainage. The main inflow to the planned impoundment has 2.1 times the discharge of Lower Little Swatara Creek--a forested and agricultural basin that is also tributary to the proposed impoundment. During the 1982 water year, 17,400 tons of suspended sediment were transported from the study area. About 46 percent of the annual load was transported during 3 days of high flow. Inflows to the planned impoundment from both Lower Little Swatara Creek and Swatara Creek above Highway 895 were poorly buffered. Measured concentrations of alkalinity and acidity were usually less than 10 mg/L (milligrams per liter) and 5 mg/L as CaCO3, respectively. The inflows contain high concentrations of nutrients and metals that would probably stratify in a reservoir. Maximum concentrations of dissolved nitrate and total phosphorus were 2.6 mg/L and 0.31 mg/L, respectively. At Lower Little Swatara Creek; these concentrations are well above those needed for growth of algae. Maximum observed concentrations for total recoverable iron, aluminum, and manganese at Swatara Creek above Highway 895 at Pine Grove were 100,000 ug/L (micrograms per liter), 66,000 ug/L, and 2,300 ug/L, respectively.
\n
Large increases in metal concentrations along with simultaneous decreases in pH and increases in acidity confirm that mine drainage continues to degrade the water quality of Swatara Creek and may have a large impact on water quality of the planned impoundment. Iron, lead, copper, and zinc concentrations periodically exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) criteria for freshwater aquatic life. Concentrations of manganese and lead also exceeded the U.S. EPA criteria for domestic water supplies and human health, respectively.
\n
The water quality of the Swatara Creek Reservoir will depend on characteristics such as (1) the detention time of water in the lake, (2) the timing and extent of thermal and chemical stratification, (3) sedimentation, and (4) the chemical loading and concentrations in the lake. Each of these characteristics may depend in part, on streamflow.
\n
The impoundment will act as a sediment trap and thus reduce the concentrations of total phosphorus, iron, aluminum, lead, copper, and zinc immediately downstream from the impoundment. Large storm discharges and releases from the hypolimnion of the reservoir to attain the winter-pool level may contain low oxygen concentrations and elevated concentrations of iron, aluminum, lead, copper, and zinc. Unless conservation releases from the multi-level release gates are carefully controlled, low dissolved-oxygen levels and high metal concentrations may degrade the downstream water quality and be detrimental to the aquatic community.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Harrisburg, PA","doi":"10.3133/wri854023","usgsCitation":"Fishel, D.K., and It is a preliminary map, compiled at a scale of 1:250,000 from sources of differing type and quality (fig. I, table 1). County drift-thickness maps produced by the Ohio Geological Survey are the most reliable source of data used. These county maps, either published or in manuscript form, were available for 36 of the 72 counties that contain glacial or glacially related deposits more than 50 ft thick. An earlier, reconnaissance drift-thickness map of northwestern Ohio (Ohio Department of Natural Resources, 1960) provided data for parts of 12 additional counties. Published maps of bedrock topography were utilized for 9 counties and for parts of 6 counties. The computation of drift thickness in these counties is less reliable then the drift-thickness maps published by the Ohio Geological Survey because the bedrock topography maps, most of which are at least 20 years old, were compiled from a more limited set of data. In the remaining counties, only well-log data were available. Drift-thickness data in these counties are the least reliable; the determination of thickness trends was commonly guided by the configuration of preglacial drainage channels (as drawn by Stout and others, 1943) and by topography.
\n
Throughout the glaciated areas of Ohio, and especially near the glacial margin, a network of drainage channels is buried by glacial drift. Some of these channels arc of a preglacial age while others were formed during interglacial periods; some were cut into the bedrock by rivers— either preglacial rivers or meltwater streams flowing along the glacial margin—while others, such as the lower Cuyahoga River valley, may have been overdeepened by the erosive power of glacial ice. The thickest deposits of drift in the state occur in the lower Cuyahoga River valley near Lake Erie, and above the buried valley in west-central Ohio that has been historically considered a part of the Teays Valley. The thickest drift reliably measured in Ohio to date is 602 ft in a drill hole near Cleveland.
\n
In contrast to the extreme variations in drift thickness encountered in the vicinity of buried channels, drift on the upland arcus is generally thinner and the variations in thickness are much less pronounced. Worthy of note, however, are three large areas where the drift sheet is relatively thick. In northwestern Ohio, a large volume of drift was deposited along the flanks of the Erie ice lobe (fig. 2) near the interlobate position with the Saginaw lobe to the northwest; drift thickness there exceeds 200 ft. Thick drift was also deposited in a roughly cast-west band across the Miami lobe. The mechanism that produced this band of thick drift is not obvious, but it may have been influenced in part by bedrock topography. Bedrock control of drift thickness is more clearly indicated to the cast of Columbus, along the eastern flank of the Scioto lobe, where ice slow was resisted by rocks of the Allegheny plateau. The edge of the plateau, or the Allegheny escarpment, is obscured by glacial deposits but its likely position (Fenneman, 1938; Stout and others, 1913; Dove, 1960; and Root and others, 1961) is shown on the map. Southward from the ice margin's reentrant position in southern Richland County, ice flowing eastward from the Scioto lobe encountered the topographically higher plateau, which constrained the ice and caused drift to accumulate in significant thicknesses just to the west of the escarpment.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1862","usgsCitation":"Soller, D.R., 1986, Preliminary map showing the thickness of glacial deposits in Ohio: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1862, Plate: 45.55 x 37.23 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1862.","productDescription":"Plate: 45.55 x 37.23 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":326125,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1862.JPG"},{"id":327510,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1862/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"0","country":"United States","state":"Ohio","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -85,38 ], [ -85,42 ], [ -81,42 ], [ -81,38 ], [ -85,38 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66cf03","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Soller, D. Water levels in 1,071 wells were measured in 1983, and are compared with 827 water level measurements made in the same wells in 1978. Increased groundwater withdrawals from the major artesian aquifers that underlie the New Jersey Coastal Plain have caused large cones of depression in the artesian heads. These cones are delineated on detailed potentiometric surface maps based on water level data collected in the fall of 1983. Hydrographs from observation wells show trends of water levels for the 6-year period of 1978 through 1983. The Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer system is divided into the lower, middle, and upper aquifers. The potentiometric surfaces in these aquifers form large cones of depression centered in the Camden and Middlesex-Monmouth County areas. Measured water levels declined as much as 23 ft in these areas for the period of study. The lowest levels are 96 ft below sea level in Camden County and 91 ft below sea level in the Middlesex-Monmouth County area. Deep cones of depression in coastal Monmouth and Ocean counties in both the Englishtown aquifer system and Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer are similar in location and shape. This is because of an effective hydraulic connection between these aquifers. Measured water levels declined as much as 29 ft in the Englishtown aquifer system and 21 ft in the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer during the period of study. The lowest levels are 249 ft below sea level in the Englishtown aquifer system and 196 ft below sea level in the Wenonah-Mount Laurel aquifer. Water levels in the Piney Point aquifer are as low as 75 ft below sea level at Seaside Park, Ocean County and 35 ft below sea level in southern Cumberland County. Water levels in Cumberland County are affected by large withdrawals of groundwater in Kent County, Delaware. Water levels in the Atlantic City 800 ft sand of the Kirkwood Formation define an extensive elongated cone of depression. Water levels are as low as 76 ft below sea level near Margate and Ventnor, Atlantic County. Measured water levels declined as much as 9 ft in the coastal region between Cape May County and Ocean County for the period of study. Data collected from September 1982 to October 1983 · in the 188-square mile intensively farmed upper Conestoga River basin indicates high nitrate and detectable herbicide concentrations in ground water are closely associated with agricultural practices and carbonate geology. Maximum nitrate-nitrogen concentrations from 42 wells and one spring ranged from 37 to 40 milligrams per liter in the agricultural areas, and 12 to 19 milligrams per liter in the nonagricultural areas. Median concentrations of nitrate generally were three times higher in wells that penetrated carbonate rock than in wells that penetrated noncarbonate rocks. More than 40 percent of the wells in the carbonate and agricultural areas had dissolved-nitrate concentrations that exceeded 10 milligrams per liter as nitrogen, the criterion established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as excessive for drinking water. The U.S. Geological Survey has collected suspended-sediment data at 243 sites; these data are stored in the U.S. Geological Survey 's water data storage and retrieval system. The U.S. Forest Service has collected suspended-sediment and bedload data at an additional 225 sites, and most of these data are stored in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 's water-quality-control information system. Additional unpublished sediment data are in the possession of the collecting entities. Annual suspended-sediment loads were computed for 133 U.S. Geological Survey sediment-data-collection sites using the daily mean water-discharge/sediment-transport-curve method. Sediment-transport curves were derived for each site by one of three techniques: (1) Least-squares linear regression of all pairs of suspended-sediment and corresponding water-discharge data, (2) least-squares linear regression of data sets subdivided on the basis of hydrograph season; and (3) graphical fit to a logarithm-logarithm plot of data. From the beginning, however, one of the core tasks of any national geological survey has been the assessment and evaluation of its nation's mineral and fuel resources. The methods by which such assessments are carried out have become more sophisticated over time, in keeping with advancing geoscientific knowledge and the development and application of new concepts and technologies. However, the basic objectives of such work have changed little, and the fundamental goal remains the construction of the best possible base of information on the nature, distribution and economic potential of the resources within a nation's landmass and its offshore jurisdictions.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir980","usgsCitation":"1986, Prospects for mineral resource assessments on public lands: Proceedings of the Leesburg workshop: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 980, xiii, 330 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir980.","productDescription":"xiii, 330 p.","costCenters":[{"id":222,"text":"Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":31481,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1986/0980/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":121262,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1986/0980/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a93e4b07f02db658798","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Cargill, Simon M.","contributorId":7256,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cargill","given":"Simon","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":729714,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Green, Steven B.","contributorId":48165,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Green","given":"Steven","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":729715,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}]}}

S. Geological Survey that show earthquake data of individual states or groups of states at the scale of 1:1,000,000. This map shows only those earthquakes with epicenters located within the boundaries of Utah, even though earthquakes in nearby states or countries may have been felt or may have caused damage in Utah.

The data in table 1 were used to compile the seismicity map; these data are a corrected, expanded, and updated (through 1982) version of the data used by Algermissen (1969) for a study of seismic risk in the United States. The locations and intensities of some earthquakes were revised and intensities were assigned where none had been before. Many earthquakes were added to the original list from new data sources as well as from some old data sources that had not been previously used. The data in table 1 represent best estimates of the location of the epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake on the basis of historical and current information. Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed, but not all, especially for earthquakes that occurred before seismic instruments were universally used.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mf1856","usgsCitation":"Stover, C.W., Reagor, B., and Algermissen, S.T., 1986, Seismicity map of the state of Utah:
