Concentrations of the major ions generally were similar for ground water collected in the two primary geologic zones--the alluvial fan and basin trough. Soils in the alluvial-fan zone are derived from Coast Range rocks, and soils in the basin-trough zone are from a mixture of Sierra Nevada and Coast Range sources. Most of the variance in concentrations of major ions, as determined by principal components analysis, was associated with ground-water salinity and the dominant ions--magnesium, sodium, sulfate, and chloride. Most of the variance in trace elements was associated with concentrations of boron, molybdenum, selenium, and vanadium, which are present as mobile oxyanions. The concentrations of oxyanions trace elements were significantly correlated (a=0.05) with groundwater salinity, but the correlations between selenium and salinity and molybdenum and salinity were significantly different (a=0.05) in the alluvial-fan geologic zone compared with the basin-trough geologic zone. The region was mapped originally in reconnaissance fashion by Buddington and Chapin (1929) and subsequently by W.H. Condon and I.L. Tailleur (unpublished U.S.G.S. report, 1960) primarily with the use of aerial photographs. More recently, MacKevett (I 963) studied the geology of the Bokan Mountain-Stone Rock Bay area, Herreid and others (1978) and G. Donald Eberlein, Michael Churkin Jr., and Walter Vennum (Eberlein and others, 1983; unpublished data) mapped Kassa and Klakas Inlets and regions to the north, and Thompson and others (1982) and B. Col lot (in Saint-Andre and others, 1983) studied the Bokan Mountain Granite. Streamflows were lowest in the San Joaquin River near Stevinson (median 43 cu ft sq /sec) and in Mud Slough (median 74.7 cu ft sq). The flow of the San Joaquin River increased downstream to Vernalis (median 2,460 cu ft sq); most flows are from the Merced (median 221.5 cu ft sq), Tuolumne (median 201 cu ft sq), and Stanislaus (median 1,390 cu ft sq) Rivers, which enter the San Joaquin River from the east. The Stanislaus River had the lowest median concentrations of dissolved solids (59 milligrams per liter), dissolved boron (10 micrograms per liter), and dissolved molybdenum (less than 1 microgram per liter). Dissolved selenium was lowest in the Stanislaus, Tuolumne, and Merced Rivers, and the San Joaquin River near Stevinson, all of which had concentrations that were not detectable at the level of 1 microgram per liter, except for one detection of dissolved selenium of 1 microgram per liter in the Tuolumne River. Mud Slough had the highest median concentrations of dissolved solids (1,425 milligrams per liter), dissolved boron (2,850 micrograms per liter), and dissolved selenium (21 micrograms per liter). The highest dissolved molybdenum concentrations were in Mud Slough (8 micrograms per liter) and the San Joaquin River at Freemont Ford (8 micrograms per liter). An aquifer, however, may be exempted from protection and used for injected wastes where the aquifer meets criteria established in the Agency 's Underground Injection Control program. The Highland Rim aquifer system in Tennessee consists of Mississippian age carbonate rocks and occurs from the Valley and Ridge of East Tennessee to west of the Tennessee River. This aquifer contains potable water and is an important source of drinking water for municipal and domestic supplies on the Highland Rim. The Highland Rim aquifer system under parts of the Cumberland Plateau is not currently used as a source of drinking water and is not expected to be used in the future. These areas meet parts of the EPA 's Underground Injection Control criteria for exempting aquifers to receive injected waste. Springs in this basin are used as a water supply for the town of Palisade. The geohydrology of the basin is described and the potential hydrologic effects of underground coal mining in the basin summarized. Geologic formations in the basin consists of Cretaceous sandstone and shale, Tertiary sandstone, shale, and basalt, and unconsolidated deposits of Quaternary age. Some sandstone and coal beds are permeable, although bedrock in the basin typically is a confining bed. Unconsolidated deposits contain aquifers that are the source of spring discharge. Stream discharge was measured on Rapid and Cottonwood Creeks, and inventories were made of 7 reservoirs, 25 springs, and 12 wells. Specific conductance of streams ranged from 320 to 1,050 microsiemens/cm at 25C; pH ranged from 7.8 to 8.6. Specific conductance of springs ranged from 95 to 1,050 microsiemens/cm at 25C; pH ranged from 6.8 to 8.3. Discharge from the basin includes about 18,800 acre-ft/yr as evapotranspiration, 1,300 acre-ft/yr as springflow, 1,280 acre-ft/yr as streamflow, and negligible groundwater flow in bedrock. With appropriate mining methods, underground mining would not decrease flow in basin streams or from springs. The potential effects of mining-caused subsidence might include water-pipeline damage and temporary dewatering of bedrock adjacent to coal mining. Segments from selected depths below the sediment surface have been analyzed for a variety of constituents, including lead-210, trace metals, nutrients, and particle size. The core sites were positioned throughout the hydrologic divisions and geomorphic units of the tidal Potomac system and in water depths ranging from 1 to 30 cm. Cores collected by divers were mostly for historical deposition-rate computations. Vibra cores, as much as 12 m long, were collected primarily to provide data on long-term (pre-historical) sedimentation rates and conditions. Benthos cores were used to provide samples rapidly in locations where divers were not available. Alpha counting methods were used to determine the polonium-210 radioactivity and secular equilibrium was assumed between lead-210 and polonium-210. The alpha decay of polonium-210 provides a measure of the lead-210 radioactivity of the lead-210 produced by in-situ decay of radium-226 in the sediment column (background lead-210) and the lead-210 from external sources (unsupported lead-210). Only the unsupported lead-210 was used in computations of the deposition rate. The count error is based on the counting statistics alone and varies from 3 to 5% of the total number of counts. The background level of lead-210 in tidal Potomac system sediment cores usually is based on in-situ measurements of total lead-210 at depths below which no unsupported lead-210 is believed to be present, and the lead-210 concentrations are relatively constant.
