Data from the two holes revealed that the bottom of the zone of vigorous groundwater circulation is confined by carbonate rocks at a depth of about 1,000 feet (863 feet below sea level). The zone of circulation is divided into two high-permeability zones. The dissolved solids of the water within the high-permeability zones is approximately 150 milligrams per liter. Within the carbonate rocks, the dissolved solids content of the water reaches about 2,000 milligrams per liter at the bottom of the core hole. Water levels in the core holes declined a total of about 16 feet as the hole was drilled; most of the head loss occurred at depths below 1,800 feet. The porosities of selected cores ranged from 1.6 to 45.3 percent; the hydraulic conductivities ranged from less than 0.000024 to 19.0786 feet per day in the horizontal direction and from less than 0.000024 to 2.99 feet per day in the vertical direction; and the ratio of vertical to horizontal permeability ranged from 0.03 to 1.98. Transmissivity values ranged from less than 100 to about 35,000 ft sq/day; storativity ranged from about 0.00002 to 0.0002. Data for lower Tertiary sediments represented by the Clayton and Tallahatta Formations and equivalent Midwayan and Claibornian sediments are listed for 17 sites. Transmissivity values of these sediments range from about 500 to 10,000 ft sq/day. Transmissivity values for the Cretaceous Providence Sand and Cusseta Sand and equivalent Navarroan-Tayloran sediments are listed for 10 sites and range from about 500 to 34,000 ft sq/day. Transmissivity values for the Blufftown and Eutaw Formations and equivalent Cretaceous Tayloran-Austinian sediments are listed for 16 sites and range from about 3000 to 35,000 ft sq/day. Transmissivity of the Cretaceous Tuscaloosa Formation and equivalent Eaglefordian sediments is listed for 5 sites and ranges from about 30 to 500 ft sq/day. Estimates of transmissivity based on well specific capacity were computed by using the modified nonequilibrium formula and linear regression analysis. The regression analysis was based on log-transformed paired transmissivity and specific-capacity data at 48 pumping wells. The regression model provided better estimates of transmissivity than the modified nonequilibrium formula. The park is located in the Little Missouri badlands. Discharges and water-surface elevations for 100- or 500-year floods or both were computed for selected reaches along the Little Missouri River and three of its tributaries (Knutson Creek, Paddock Creek, and Squaw Creek) within and adjacent to Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The 100- and 500-year flood discharges for the Little Missouri River were determined from streamflow records. The 100-year flood discharges for the three creeks were estimated using a multiple-regression equation based on drainage area and soil-infiltration index. Water-surface elevations were determined by the step-backwater method. The Waialae aquifer is separated from the ground water of Kaimuki to the west by Palolo valley fill and the Kaau rift zone, and from the Wailupe-Hawaii Kai aquifer to the east by a line of northeast-trending volcanic dikes. The distinct ground-water head changes across these boundaries indicate that the aquifers are separate, with little or no leakage between them.\r\n\r\nA water budget of leeward southeast Oahu determined the quantity and spatial distribution of ground-water recharge. These estimates of recharge, 6 million gallons per day over the Waialae area and 9.1 million gallons per day over the Wailupe-Hawaii Kai area, were used as input to a finite-element two-dimensional ground-water flow model. Ground-water heads were simulated in the modeled aquifer for several pumping scenarios. Projected pumpage from the recently drilled wells int he area is predicted to draw the water table down about one foot from its present mean position.\r\n\r\nThe existing ground-water development of 1.4 million gallons per day is small compared to the quantity of ground water that flows through the area and discharges to the sea. During August 1985, hydrologic data were collected at a total of 15 stream sites in Benton, Lafayette, Marshall, and Union Counties. Main channel widths ranged from approximately 30 feet to 115 feet. Stream depths during low-flow periods were shallow, generally less than 1.0 foot at most sites. Discharges ranged from 0.04 to 74.8 cubic feet per second. The specific conductance of stream water ranged from 28 to 78 microsiemens and dissolved-solids concentrations ranged from 24 to 59 milligrams per liter. Turbidity values were 20 units or less. Chromium and copper concentrations in bottom material samples ranged from below detection limits (1 microgram per gram) to 5 microgram per gram and mercury concentrations ranged from 0.01 to 0.08 microgram per gram. This report details characteristics and processes that commonly determine the most acceptable approaches to hydrologic monitoring in the arid and semiarid central-western United States. No single approach is best for all hydrologic systems; consideration of basin characteristics, regulatory requirements, and regional patterns in hydrologic systems is necessary in any well-designed monitoring program for hydrologic-impact assessment. This report describes processes and characteristics that control the surface and subsurface hydraulics, as well as the water quality, of typical hydrological systems being mined in the central-western United States. After a discussion of these processes and characteristics, three examples are presented that describe acceptable, but nonexclusive, approaches to hydrologic monitoring network design. The area is bounded by Forest Service road 211 and Florida highway 250 on the south, Forest Service roads 233 and 232 on the west and north, and Forest Service road 235 on the east. The area can be reached by traveling 11.7 mi on Florida Highway 250 northeast from its junction with U.S. Highway 441, north of Lake City to the junction of Highway 250 and Forest Service road 233, thence north 1.3 mi on the Forest Service road to the southern corner of the area.</p>\n<p>The geology of the Big Cum Swamp Roadless Area, which is discussed briefly in this report, is covered in somewhat more detail in a report by Patterson, Cathcart, Cameron, and Schruben (1984). The mineral resource potential is quite similar to that in the Natural Area Roadless Area outlined by Cathcart, Patterson and Crandall (1983). Geochemical sampling was conducted during 1980 and 1981. This report summarizes the results of that investigation and provides details of the geochemical evaluation used in the final mineral resource assessment of the study area (Kennedy and others, 1983).</p>\n<p>Map A shows the locations of all sites sampled for this report and the distributions of anomalous concentrations of 4 elements in 33 samples of rock, 5 elements in 34 samples of minus-60-mesh stream sediment, and 11 elements in 33 samples of nonmagnetic heavy-mineral concentrate derived from stream sediment.
