The maps are based on water-level measurements made in over 400 wells that tap the alluvial aquifers, the principal source of water supply for crop irrigation and fish farming in the Delta.

Water levels in April 1981 were lower than normal as a result of less-than-normal rainfall, low stream stages, and residual drawdown caused by pumping for irrigation during 1980. Litter fall was collected monthly from nets located in 16 study plots. The plots represented five forest types in the swamp and levee areas of the Apalachicola River flood plain. Forty-three species of trees, vines, and other plants contributed to the total litter fall, but more than 90 percent of the leaf material originated from 12 species. Nonleaf material made up 42 percent of the total litter fall. Average litter fall was determined to be 800 grams per square meter per year, resulting in an annual deposition of 3.6 ? 105 metric tons of organic material in the 454-square-kilometer flood plain. \r\n\r\nThe levee communities have less tree biomass but greater tree diversity than do swamp communities. The levee vegetation, containing less tree biomass, produces slightly more litter fall per unit of ground surface area than does the swamp vegetation. The swamps are dominated by three genera: tupelo (Nyssa), cypress (Taxodium) and ash (Fraxinus). These genera account for more than 50 percent of the total leaf fall in the flood plain, but they are the least productive, on a weight-perbiomass basis, of any of the 12 major leaf producers. \r\n\r\nDecomposition rates of leaves from five common floodplain tree species were measured using a standard leaf-bag technique. Leaf decomposition was highly species dependent. Tupelo (Nyssa spp.) and sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) leaves decomposed completely in 6 months when flooded by river water. Leaves of baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) and diamond-leaf oak (Quercus laurifolia) were much more resistant. Water hickory (Carya aquatica) leaves showed intermediate decomposition rates. Decomposition of all species was greatly reduced in dry environments. Carbon and biomass loss rates from the leaves were nearly linear over a 6-month period, but nitrogen and phosphorus leaching was nearly complete within 1 month. Much of the organic substance may be recycled in the forest ecosystem, but annual flooding of the river provides an important mechanism for mobilization of the litter-fall products.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2196B","usgsCitation":"Elder, J.F., and Cairns, D.J., 1982, Production and decomposition of forest litter fall on the Apalachicola River flood plain, Florida: Chapter B, Apalachicola River quality assessment: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2196, v, 42 p. :ill. S. Geological Survey. The retrieval revealed the analytical results of 17,959 samples collected and processed between October 1973 and October 1978. Of the approximately 500 genera of freshwater algae reported in the United States, the U.S. Geological Survey observed 321 genera in the phytoplankton. Fifty-two genera were considered to be commonly occurring and 42 genera were considered to be community dominants. The report lists, describes, and provides a detailed taxonomic key to the identification of 58 genera of algae considered either commonly occurring or dominant. This new taxonomic guide overcomes some deficiencies in existing keys to this tribe and the reviewed and updated taxonomy enables identification of the larvae that may be useful as ecological indicators. Over 2,000 specimens from 26 states were examined, identified and measured in this study. The following genera were included: Stempellinell, Zavrelia, Stempellina, Constempellina, Corynocera, Cladotanytarsus,.. Paratanytarsus, Rheotanytarsus,. Micropsectra, Lauterbornia, Nimbocera, Tanytarsus and Neozavrelia. Photographs illustrate mature larvae of these genera with the exception of Zavrelia and Neozavrelia which are not known to exist in North America. The morphological data, Which are summarized in a table of distinctive characteristics and the dichotomous key, enable identification to genus. Notes on range, habitat and food preference are included, and species identifications are presented where applicable.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr82768","usgsCitation":"Steiner, J., Doughman, J., and Moore, C., 1982, A generic guide to the larvae of the Nearctic Tanytarsini, (Chironomidae:diptera): U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-768, vi, 47 p. : ill. ; 28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr82768.","productDescription":"vi, 47 p. : ill. ; 28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":169544,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0768/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":85617,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/0768/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6aeab3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Steiner, J.W.","contributorId":55279,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steiner","given":"J.W.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":238242,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Doughman, J.S.","contributorId":82740,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Doughman","given":"J.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":238243,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Moore, C.R.","contributorId":46962,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"C.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":238241,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The primary source of public supply is from the pumped zone, locally known as the Coastal Ridge aquifer. Water levels in wells in the pumped zone respond rapidly to pumpage and usually indicate a cone of depression in most of the highly urbanized Naples area. The cone of depression caused by pumpage has created significant water-level differences between the water-table zone and pumped zone. Water-level differences in the two zones from 1975 to 1979 frequently exceed 10 feet. The method is typically applied to estimate terrain effects for topography near the station, for example within 3 km of the station, although it has been used successfully to a radius of 15 km to estimate corrections in areas where topographic mapping is poor. \r\n\r\nPoints (about 20) that define topographic maxima, minima, and changes in the slope gradient are picked on the topographic map, within the desired radius of correction about the station. Particular attention must be paid to the area immediately surrounding the station to ensure a good topographic representation. The horizontal and vertical coordinates of these points are entered into the computer, usually by means of a digitizer. The computer then fits a multiquadric surface to the input points to form an analytic representation of the surface. By means of the divergence theorem, the gravity effect of an interior closed solid can be expressed as a surface integral, and the terrain correction is calculated by numerical evaluation of the integral over the surfaces of a cylinder, The vertical sides of which are at the correction radius about the station, the flat bottom surface at the topographic minimum, and the upper surface given by the multiquadric equation. \r\n\r\nThe method has been tested with favorable results against models for which an exact result is available and against manually computed field-station locations in areas of rugged topography. By increasing the number of points defining the topographic surface, any desired degree of accuracy can be obtained. The method is more objective than manual ring-chart techniques because no average compartment elevations need be estimated ?","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey,","doi":"10.3133/ofr821045","usgsCitation":"Gettings, M.E., 1982, Near-station terrain corrections for gravity data by a surface-integral technique: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 82-1045, 22 p., ill., map ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr821045.","productDescription":"22 p., ill., map ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":141605,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1045/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36729,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1982/1045/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4affe4b07f02db697ea9","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gettings, M.
