Average monthly mean, average monthly maximum, average annual total, and average daily mean observed and model predicted streamflow differences were small, on the average < 10 %, indicating the Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System can, when adequately calibrated, satisfactorily estimate these streamflow factors. Average monthly minimum streamflow generally was over-predicted, but actual differences between observed and model predicted average monthly minimum streamflow are small. To determine relative errors of streamflow prediction in ungaged basins, three different model parameter sets were used to predict streamflow in a nearby gaged basin. The first set of parameters was based on the assumption that little information about this basin was available. Model parameters used to calibrate basins approximately 75 mi away were adjusted to model this basin on the basis of easily obtainable physical basin characteristics, such as elevation and slope. The second set of parameters was based on the first set, except it was assumed that local climate information was available to estimate the model 's climatic parameters for the basin better. The second set of parameters improved streamflow estimation in this basin by about 7% over the first model parameter set. The third set of model parameters assumed that the model had been calibrated to similar, nearby basins. This model parameter set was derived from the model parameters of the earlier calibrated basins. Using these calibrated model parameter values improved streamflow estimates by approximately 21% over the second parameter set. The average difference between observed and predicted average annual streamflow for the basin using these parameters was 16.3%. For comparison, the average difference between observed and predicted average annual total streamflow for the calibration basins was 12.9%. This suggests that, with some increase in error, this model can be used to estimate streamflow in ungaged basins, if the model has been calibrated to a nearby gaged basin with similar physical characteristics. Streamflows were lowest in the San Joaquin River near Stevinson (median 43 cu ft sq /sec) and in Mud Slough (median 74.7 cu ft sq). The flow of the San Joaquin River increased downstream to Vernalis (median 2,460 cu ft sq); most flows are from the Merced (median 221.5 cu ft sq), Tuolumne (median 201 cu ft sq), and Stanislaus (median 1,390 cu ft sq) Rivers, which enter the San Joaquin River from the east. The Stanislaus River had the lowest median concentrations of dissolved solids (59 milligrams per liter), dissolved boron (10 micrograms per liter), and dissolved molybdenum (less than 1 microgram per liter). Dissolved selenium was lowest in the Stanislaus, Tuolumne, and Merced Rivers, and the San Joaquin River near Stevinson, all of which had concentrations that were not detectable at the level of 1 microgram per liter, except for one detection of dissolved selenium of 1 microgram per liter in the Tuolumne River. Most of the 30 irrigation wells in the valley are capable of producing more than 200 gallons per minute. Approximately 2,700 acre-feet of groundwater for irrigation were pumped from the shallow aquifer during 1980 and 4,200 acre-feet during 1981. The shallow aquifer , the subject of this study, consists of the North Park Formation and a lower sandstone unit of late Tertiary (Miocene) age and deposits of Quaternary age along the North Platte River. During 1980, water levels were measured in about 140 wells, 41 of which had been measured prior to 1969. The 1980 water levels were within 5 feet of the pre-1969 water levels. During 1980-81, 21 of the wells were used as observation wells. A water-level contour map of the study area was prepared by the Kriging statistical procedure water surface altitudes for 235 groundwater and stream locations. This appraisal was limited to interpretation of instantaneous monthly water quality data collected in the Umpqua River basin from water years 1974 to 1983. These data were used to compare water quality conditions throughout the basin and to determine if data collected from the NASQAN (National Stream Quality Accounting network) station are representative of upstream basin conditions. In general, data collected at the NASQAN station represent a composite of water quality from the North and South Umpqua Rivers. These river basins account for 82 % of the NASQAN station drainage. Water quality concentrations, loads, yields, and trends were statistically described and related to point source effluent loads and basin characteristics including geohydrology, hydrology, population, land use, and water use. Available point-and nonpoint-source data provided minimal information for determining cause-effect relations and for explaining observed trends in water quality; however, the data did indicate that the largest effluent discharges are located in the South Umpqua River basin in the Roseburg-Winston area. Instantaneous and annual flow weighted levels of specific conductance, phosphorus, organic plus ammonia nitrogen, nitrite plus nitrate, and fecal coliform bacteria are generally highest in the South Umpqua River near Roseburg. These high levels generally occur during the summer months when river flow is extremely low relative to flow in the North Umpqua River. The North Umpqua River has among the lowest constituent concentrations observed in the basin. Baseline values for 52 properties in native soils, 15 properties in big sagebrush, and 13 properties in western wheatgrass were established. Our Study revealed statistically significant regional variations of the following properties across the basin: in soil&-aluminum, cobalt, copper, iron, manganese, sodium, nickel, phosphorus, lead, scandium, titanium, vanadium, zinc, organic and total carbon, pH, clay, dolomite, sodium feldspar, and DTPA-extractable calcium, cadmium, iron, potassium, manganese, nickel, phosphorus, yttrium, and zinc; in big sagebrush-barium, calcium, copper, magnesium, molybdenum, sodium, strontium, zinc, and ash; and in western wheatgrass-boron, barium, calcium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, strontium, zinc, and ash. These variations show up as north-south trends across the basin, or they reflect differences in elevation, hydrology, and soil parent material. Baseline values for properties that do not have statistically significant regional variations can be represented by geometric means and deviations calculated from all values within the basin. \r\n\r\nChemical and mineralogical analyses of soil and chemical analyses of western wheatgrass samples from Colorado State University's experimental revegetation plot at Anvil Points provide data useful in assessing potential effects on soil and plant properties when largescale revegetation operations begin. The concentrations of certain properties are related to the presence of topsoil over spent shale in the lysimeters. In soils, calcium, fluorine, lithium, magnesium, sodium, phosphorus, strontium, carbonate and total carbon, and DTPA-extractable boron, copper, iron, magnesium, and nickel have lower concentrations in topsoil than in the spent oil shale; whereas, silicon, titanium, ytterbium, clay, quartz, and DTPA-extractable potassium have greater concentrations in the topsoil than in the spent oil shale. In western wheatgrass, molybdenum has a lower concentration in grasses growing on the topsoil than in grasses on the spent oil shale; whereas, barium, calcium, manganese, strontium, zinc, and ash have greater concentrations in grasses growing on the topsoil than on the spent oil shale. When compared to baseline values, soils in the revegetation plot are significantly higher in concentrations of lead, zinc, organic and total carbon, and DTP A-extractable cadmium, iron, manganese, nickel, phosphorus, and zinc. Whereas, western wheatgrass grown within the revegetation plot has concentrations which fall within the baseline values established in the regional study. \r\n\r\nThe equations used in predicting concentrations of elements in plants from native and altered sites are cumbersome because of the large number of variables required to adequately predict expected concentrations and are of limited use because many explained only a small proportion of the total variation.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/pp1134E","usgsCitation":"Tuttle, M.L., Severson, R.C., Dean, W., and Klusman, R., 1986, Geochemical variability of soils and biogeochemical variability of plants in the Piceance Basin, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1134, p. The slope increases to the east from about 20 ft/mi at the fall line to about 70 ft/mi at the eastern edge of the study area. The irregular nature of the basement surface is demonstrated by: (1) the variable altitudes of the basement surface in the western portion of the study area; (2) the protruding granite/gneiss rock body at a quarry near the Town of Fountain, Pitt County; and (3) the flattening of the basement surface slope observed near the Jones County and Craven County border. Basement rock types in this study area include granite, granite gneiss, metavolcanic, and metasedimentary rocks of Precambrian to Paleozoic age.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/wri864082","usgsCitation":"Lyke, W.L., and Winner, M.D., 1986, Altitude of basement surface in the central coastal plain area of North Carolina: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 86-4082, 1 map and 1 data sheet ; 66 x 84 cm., on sheet 87 x 91 cm. and 57 x 91 cm., folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri864082.","productDescription":"1 map and 1 data sheet ; 66 x 84 cm., on sheet 87 x 91 cm. and 57 x 91 cm., folded in envelope 30 x 24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":173113,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":81718,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4082/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":81719,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4082/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adde4b07f02db686a74","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lyke, William L.","contributorId":38616,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lyke","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":229733,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Winner, M. Mean water hardness at all sites was in the ' soft ' category. Sodium concentrations were less than 20 mg/L at two sites and less than 35 mg/L at the other sites. Mean nitrogen values for the two Blackstone River sites were in the range that could cause undesirable growths of aquatic plants. Mean phosphorus values exceeded the recommended limits for protection of aquatic life at four sites. Trace-element concentrations in the water were generally low. Those trace elements which were found in concentrations near or exceeding any standard or criterion include cadmium, chromium, lead, iron, and manganese. High concentrations of several trace elements were found in the bottom materials at several sites. The bottom materials also contained pesticides and organic chemicals including aldrin, chlordane, DDD, DDE, DDT, dieldren, endosulfan , endrin, heptachlor, Mirex, and PCB. Results of trend analysis of total phosphorus, total nitrogen, and specific conductance show a downward trend in phosphorus at two sites; an upward trend in nitrogen at one site; and one downward trend and one upward trend in specific conductance.
