However, the determination of recovery rates for individual species is critical for estimating abundance by this technique. Recovery rates in this study varied greatly among species, but did not vary among station types (cove or shoreline) or sample years (1976 or 1977). Tagged fishes, used to establish recovery rates, did not change in weight due to the sampling procedures from time of introduction to time of collection. Total adjusted abundance estimates ranged from 157 to 18,300 fishes/hectare and from 36 to 4,080 kg/hectare for fishes greater than 124 mm in Texas estuaries. Mean number and weight of fishes per hectare were generally greater at cove stations than at shoreline stations. Lakes here are distinguished from other standing waters by limits on surface oceanic area (&gt; 0.1 ha) and depth (&gt; 2 m), and by the absence of flatural surface oceanic connection. A variety of extinct and existing water bodies, sometimes referred to as lakes, are noted. Six lakes are described. Five of them are in crater basins, 3 are freshwater, and 2 are elevated (highest = 3969 m). The scarcity of elevated lakes results from general permeability of the substrata. Among the 6 lakes, surface areas range from 0.22 to 88 ha and maximum depths from 3 to 248 m. Naturally occurring aquatic biota generally is low in species diversity except for phytoplankton; fishes and submersed vascular plants are absent. Two lowland lakes, freshwater Green (Wai a Pele) and saline Kauhak6, are described for the first time. Profundal Kauhak6, 248 m deep, has a surface area of only 0.35 ha, which results in an extraordinary relative depth of 370%. It is permanently stratified, a condition apparently due primarily to the unique morphometry of its basin.&nbsp;<br></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Bernice P. There were 90 registered participants from government agencies, academic institutions, and industry.</p><p>This effort stemmed from the realization that geomagnetism, once a small but coherent discipline, has now expanded into numerous areas of the geosciences, yet those doing research in these specialties seldom make contact outside their area of immediate interest. The impetus for this event came from the members of a committee formed to review the geomagnetic activities within the U.S. Geological Survey. They observed that the level of communication between the various elements of this now diverse discipline was inadequate, not only within their organization but also between federal agencies, academia, and the private sector. While the desire was to cover as much of geomagnetism as possible, it was necessary for a workshop of reasonable size and length to exclude some important areas of the subject: magnetic reversal chronology, studies of the externally produced variations, and most aspects of internal induction. The plan was to give emphasis to some of the newer areas: those which have recently seen a high level of activity and those with increasing activity abroad compared to that in the United States. The red cells were large and in lower number than in most terrestrial species. The manatee does not have a neutrophil as is present in most species, but it has a heterophil whose granules stain pink with the Wright-Giemsa stain. </span></p><p><span>The eosinophil has uniform red-staining granules that make its differentiation from heterophils difficult. Both large and small lymphocytes, monocytes and basophils are present. The total number of white blood cells was comparable to that of common domestic species as were the platelet numbers. The eggs were analyzed for organochlorine contaminants; contemporary shell thickness was compared with eggshells collected during earlier time periods. Concentrations of DDE and PCB's in 1979 were generally low with the most contaminated species being the Double-crested Cormorant (<i>Phalacrocorax auritus</i>), Leach's Storm Petrel (<i>Oceanodroma leucorhoa</i>), and Forktailed Storm Petrel (<i>O. furcata</i>). Limited eggshell data provide evidence that shell thinning was more severe along the Oregon coast in the 1950's than in 1979. With the possible exception of the Fork-tailed Storm Petrel, the residues in 1979 posed no known threat to the welfare of the species.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Society for Northwestern In addition, compressibility in the shut-in well can be significantly larger than the compressibility of water, which Bredehoeft and Papadopulos indicate should be used in the calculations. This recognition, combined with ever increasing land development pressures, has resulted in environmental legislation emphasizing systematic approaches to collection and analysis of habitat information.  Wildlife planners have responded with a variety of approached to the development of models that quantify habitat requirements.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The use of habitat models in wildlife management is certainly not a new concept.  Early models attempted to relate habitat quality and quantity as defined by various life requisites (Trippensee 1948).  Conceptually, these early approaches are identical to many contemporary efforts directed at modeling habitat.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>This paper has two objectives related to contemporary habitat modeling approaches.  The first objective is to characterize the assumptions and limitations inherent to operational habitat models.  Various approaches to habitat modeling, some of which will be discussed at this conference, are described in their own terminology-which tends to obscure the fact that they have common ideals and are subject to the same sets of limitations.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>The second objective of this paper is to describe a strategy for development of habitat models consistent with these potential limitations.  There seems to be two divergent perspectives on operational habitat models.  The first is an ideal perspective, which views operational habitat models with skepticism because the current state of habitat knowledge is limited.  The second is a pragmatic perspective, which recognizes that available habitat information, no matter how incomplete, can be used to improve the credibility of a land-use decision. The movement rates of lumber were similar to those of oil slicks observed elsewhere. For more than two decades, a mid-Paleozoic age for this structure has been widely accepted. The bases for dating the thrust are (1) the assumption that the Roberts thrust formed at the time of the Antler orogeny—a reliably dated mid-Paleozoic event, and (2) the concept of an overlapping assemblage consisting of sedimentary strata deposited on both the allochthon and autochthon. The first assumption is unproved, and the second relies on another assumption: that the overlap assemblage was not cut and telescoped by the Roberts thrust. In the years since a mid-Paleozoic age for the Roberts thrust became widely accepted, much new information on the stratigraphy and facies relations of Mississippian rocks in northern Nevada has accumulated. One interpretation of these new data suggests that in the Pinon Range, where a mid-Paleozoic age for the thrust was most convincingly displayed, the overlap assemblage actually may have been cut by a major thrust that juxtaposed contrasting facies of Mississippian rocks. If so, the principal evidence used to date the Roberts thrust is compromised, and the time has come for an agonizing reappraisal of all evidence bearing on the question. The aquatic fulvic acid fraction contains substances with molecular weights ranging from 500 to 2000 and is monodisperse, whereas the aquatic humic acid fraction contains substances with molecular Food contaminated with South Louisiana crude oil was more potent than food contaminated with similar concentrations of Prudhoe Bay crude oil and in each instance food contaminated with 3% (v/w) induced greater increases than food contaminated at the 1% level. These increases in hepatic naphthalene-metabolizing activity may reflect their responses to circulating petroleum contaminants derived from ingested crude oil. When incubated, fertilized eggs laid by the females consuming South Louisiana crude oil yielded ducklings that upon emergence possessed high levels of naphthalene-metabolizing activity associated with hepatic microsomes. In contrast, ducklings derived from eggs laid by females consuming food contaminated with Prudhoe Bay crude oil showed no increases in total hepatic naphthalene-metabolizing activity and only those ducklings hatched from eggs laid by females consuming food contaminated with 3% crude oil showed significantly induced levels of specific naphthalene-metabolizing activity at hatching. During the first week of postnatal life both the uncontaminated ducklings and the ducklings hatched from eggs laid by females consuming food contaminated with South Louisiana crude oil showed initial transient rises in specific and total hepatic naphthalene-metabolizing activity. In each instance, these rises were proportional to the level of contamination in the food consumed by the females. Thereafter, the specific activities of the naphthalene-metabolizing enzyme in all ducklings declined to the level found at hatching in uncontaminated ducklings. Similarly, the total hepatic naphthalene-metabolizing activities in ducklings derived from females consuming food contaminated with 3% crude oil also declined to the level at hatching in uncontaminated ducklings. Low-latitude zonation can be applied throughout. Cool-indicating Distephanus speculum s. ampl. is only abundant in the upper Miocene; however, relative paleotemperature values (Ts) suggest temperature extremes in the lower Miocene similar to those in the upper Miocene. The lower upper Miocene ap pears to be thinned or missing, because no Dictyocha brevispina Zone assemblages are identified. Samples studied are from the Upper Jurassic to Upper Cretaceous Great Valley sequence, Upper Cretaceous Hornbrook Formation, Eocene Montgomery Creek Formation, and Oligocene(?) Weaverville Formation. Cretaceous samples that survived the remagnetization have a mean remanence direction that is very close to the expected direction of the Cretaceous magnetic field at the locality of the Klamath Mountains. Data from both primary and remagnetized samples suggest the possibility of 11.5° ± 15.8° of post-Cretaceous clockwise rotation of the Klamath Mountains province. None of the data from either the primary or remagnetized samples shows evidence of the large amounts (∼ 70°) of clockwise rotation that other workers have measured for the lower Tertiary of the Oregon Coast Range. Our data indicate that the Oregon Coast Range and Klamath Mountains province did not behave as a single rigid block during the early Tertiary. Saturn's atmosphere contains persistent oval cloud features reminiscent of features on Jupiter. Smaller irregular features track out a pattern of zonal winds that is symmetric about Saturn's equator and appears to extend to great depth. Winds are predominantly eastward and reach 500 meters per second at the equator. Titan has several haze layers with significantly varying optical properties and a northern polar \"collar\" that is dark at short wavelengths. Several satellites have been photographed at substantially improved resolution. Enceladus' surface ranges from old, densely cratered terrain to relatively young, uncratered plains crossed by grooves and faults. Tethys has a crater 400 kilometers in diameter whose floor has domed to match Tethys' surface curvature and a deep trench that extends at least 270° around Tethys' circumference. Hyperion is cratered and irregular in shape. Iapetus' bright, trailing hemisphere includes several dark-floored craters, and Phoebe has a very low albedo and rotates in the direction opposite to that of its orbital revolution with a period of 9 hours. Within Saturn's rings, the \"birth\" of a spoke has been observed, and surprising azimuthal and time variability is found in the ringlet structure of the outer B ring. Glaciers were advancing strongly by 24,000 yr ago; they built moraines near the south flank of the Brooks Range, retreated briefly about 22,000 to 20,000 yr B.P., then readvanced at least one more time into their terminal zones. Glaciation was accompanied by alluviation of the Koyukuk and Kobuk drainage systems and by periglacial processes that resemble those taking place today farther north and at higher altitudes. Moraines near the south flank of the range were being revegetated by 13,500 yr B.P. A strong final readvance into end-moraine belts of some northern valleys occurred about 13,000 to 12,500 yr ago, and this event may be synchronous with less extensive glacier readvances in upper valleys of the Koyukuk region. Upper valleys were largely deglaciated by 11,800 yr B.P.</p><p>Dated Stratigraphic sections from the northern Alaska Range show similar ages for initiation and close of glaciation and also suggest a possible interstadial episode about 20,000 yr ago. Scanty records of fluctuations during ice wastage probably reflect the general scarcity of datable wood, peat, and organic soils between about 19,500 and 13,500 yr ago. The Brooks Range and Alaska Range chronologies closely approximate glacial successions determined else-where in eastern Beringia and in Siberia. Advance and retreat of glaciers throughout this region evidently were associated with widespread climatic changes that also controlled the late Wisconsin history of the Laurentide ice sheet.</p><p>The Itkillik II and late Itkillik phases of former usage are part of a single glaciation that was entirely separate from the preceding Itkillik I ice advance. For this reason, the local term \"Walker Lake Glaciation\" is here extended to the last major glaciation of the entire southern Brooks Range, and use of Itkillik phases should be discontinued. The term \"Itkillik Glaciation\" is hereby restricted to the next older ice advance, in accord with its original definition.</p><p>Cold and dry conditions during the last glaciation of eastern Beringia are indicated by (1) relatively small mountain glaciers, (2) slight (200-m) depression of glaciation limits below modern values, (3) periglacial features indicating severe frost action on slopes with little protective plant cover, (4) widespread accretion of eolian sand, (5) low pollen influx rates, (6) scarcity of radiocarbon-datable organic remains, and (7) general absence of carbonaceous paleosols.
