Irrigated acreage data were needed as input to groundwater flow models developed by the U.S. Geological Survey in a study of the regional aquifer system underlying the Snake River Plain. Single-date digital multispectral scanner data analyzed to delineate land-use classes. Source of irrigation water (surface water, ground water, and combined) was determined from county maps of 1975 water-related land use, data from previous investigations, and field checking. Surface-water diversions for irrigation on the Snake River Plain began in the 1840's. With the stimulus of Federal aid authorized by the Desert Land Act, Carey Act, and Reclamation Act, irrigated area increased rapidly in the early 1900's. By 1929, 2.2 million acres were irrigated. Ground water became and important source of irrigation water after World War II. In 1980, about 3.1 million acres of the Snake River Plain were irrigate: 2.0 million acres with surface water, 1.0 million with ground water, and 0.1 million with combined surface and ground water. About 5.2 million acres (half of the plain) are undeveloped rangeland, 1.0 million acres (one-tenth) are classified as barren. The remaining land is a mixture of dryland agriculture, water bodies, wetland, forests, and urban areas.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ha691","usgsCitation":"Lindholm, G.F., and Goodell, S.A., 1986, Irrigated acreage and other land uses on the Snake River Plain, Idaho and eastern Oregon: U.S. Geological Survey Hydrologic Atlas 691, 1 Plate: 43.90 x 33.00 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ha691.","productDescription":"1 Plate: 43.90 x 33.00 inches","costCenters":[{"id":343,"text":"Idaho Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":187949,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":89581,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ha/691/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"500000","datum":"National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929","country":"United States","state":"Idaho;Oregon","otherGeospatial":"Snake River Plain","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -117.25,42.0 ], [ -117.25,44.5 ], [ -111.5,44.5 ], [ -111.5,42.0 ], [ -117.25,42.0 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa7e4b07f02db667289","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lindholm, Gerald F.","contributorId":18374,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lindholm","given":"Gerald","email":"","middleInitial":"F.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":277869,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Goodell, S. This report presents a summary and discussion of sediment and hydraulic data obtained from October 1983 to September 1984 at ten sites on the Susitna, Chulitna, Talkeetna, and Yentna Rivers. Sediment data include measurements of suspended sediment and bedload discharge and analyses of particle size distribution of suspended sediment, bed-load, and bed material; hydraulic data include measurements of width, average depth and velocity, and water surface slope. Relations between water and sediment discharge are developed for selected sites. Sediment loads for the 1984 water year were estimated for the Yentna, Chulitna, and Talkeetna Rivers and for four sites on the Susitna River. About 25 million tons of sediment was transported by the Susitna River at Susitna Station during the 1984 water year. The Yentna and Chulitna Rivers contributed more than 20 million tons of sediment to the susitna River. About 90% of suspended material (silt, clay, and sand) transported past upstream sites reached Susitna Station during the same period. These studies will provide quantitative information for use in developing and managing regional ground-water supplies. One of these studies, the Northern Midwest Regional Aquifer-System Analysis (RASA) project, concerns the Cambrian and Ordovician age aquifers that occur in southeastern Minnesota and in parts of five other states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin (Steinhilber and Young, 1979). This report describes the hydrogeologic framework and properties of the regional aquifers in the Hollandale embayment in southeastern Minnesota (fig. 1). Two other reports describing different aspects of the regional aquifers in southeastern Minnesota were also prepared. Delin and Woodward (1984) mapped the potentiometric surface of each regional aquifer, and described the regional flow regimes; and Woodward (1985) presented a summary of 100 years of water use in southeastern Minnesota based upon trends in municipal-well installations and aquifer utilization.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, The hierarchy of terms that is used for water- yielding rocks from largest to smallest is aquifer system, aquifer, and zone. If aquifers are named, the names should be derived from lithologic terms, rock-stratigraphic units, or geographic names. The following items are not recommended as sources of aquifer names: time-stratigraphic names, relative position, alphanumeric designations, depositional environment, depth of occurrence, acronyms, and hydrologic conditions. Confining units should not be named unless doing so clearly promotes understanding of a particular aquifer system. Sources of names for confining units are similar to those for aquifer names, i.e. lithologic terms, rock-stratigraphic units or geographic names. Examples of comparison charts and tables that are used to define the geohydrologic framework are included. Aquifers are defined in 11 hypothetical examples that characterize geohydrologic settings throughout the country. The reservoir is fed by the Carson River and by the Truckee Canal which transports water from the adjacent Truckee River. Water quality in both rivers is influenced by agriculture and urbanization. Specific conductance tended to increase in a downstream direction. Generally, pH values ranged from 7.0 to 8.8. Dissolved-oxygen concentrations were greater than 5 milligrams/L. Calcium and sodium were the dominant cations and bicarbonate the dominant anion. Suspended-sediment concentrations ranged from 3 to 1,790 milligrams/L. Ultimate carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand ranged from 1.2 to 19.6 milligrams/L. The codominant algal groups were the blue-greens, greens, and diatoms. Background total nutrient and suspended-sediment loads were about 490 tons nitrogen, 130 tons phosphorus, and 200,000 tons suspended sediment. Total nutrient and suspended-sediment loads to Lahontan Reservoir were about 980 tons nitrogen, 300 tons phosphorus, and 300,000 tons suspended sediment. Loads to the lower Carson River from the reservoir were about 820 tons total nitrogen, 180 tons total phosphorus, and 26,000 tons suspended sediment.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri854147","usgsCitation":"Garcia, K.T., and Carman, R.L., 1986, Water-quality characteristics and nutrient and suspended-sediment loads, Carson River and Truckee Canal, western Nevada, water year 1980: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 85-4147, vii, 107 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri854147.","productDescription":"vii, 107 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405483,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_36310.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":56105,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4147/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158744,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1985/4147/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","otherGeospatial":"Carson River and Truckee Canal","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -120,\n 38.717\n ],\n [\n -119,\n 38.717\n ],\n [\n -119,\n 39.6\n ],\n [\n -120,\n 39.6\n ],\n [\n -120,\n 38.717\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48cce4b07f02db544586","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Garcia, K. Major objectives of this U.S. Geological Survey program are: (1) to depict areal variability of streamflow and water quality conditions nationwide on a year-by-year basis and (2) to detect long-term changes in streamflow and stream quality. Several NASQAN stations in East Tennessee are downstream from impoundments which have a significant effect on water quality. NASQAN data obtained from the Tennessee River below Watts Bar Dam and the Clinch River below Melton Hill Dam were compared to water quality data from the basins upstream. The comparison indicates that NASQAN data obtained below impoundments may not be adequate to describe a composite picture of water quality in the accounting unit. Detention time of storage in the impoundments is believed to moderate the range of constituent values observed at the NASQAN stations. Data obtained upstream and downstream from Watts Bar Dam indicate that the water sampled at the NASQAN station comes from stratified layers of the impoundment and is not representative of an integrated sample of water from the impoundment. Values of total recoverable iron suggest that, because of adsorption onto sediments in impoundments, some constituents are not accurately described by sampling below impoundments. Relations between water quality constituents and flow at stations on the Clinch River and Tennessee River are not well defined due to regulation. Direct load computations for many constituents were therefore not possible, which diminished the utility of data from these NASQAN stations to account for quantity versus quality of the water. Load computations were only possible for ionic constituents through use of a continuous specific conductance record as an intermediary. Rivers might reflect the decreasing trend in discharge during the 1972-82 water years. Thus the stations below Watts Bar Dam and below Melton Hill Dam do not adequately meet the NASQAN objective to detect and assess long-term changes in stream quality. The folio on the Charlotte 1 degree ? 2 degree quadrangle, North Carolina and South Carolina, includes (1) a geologic map; (2) four geophysical maps; (3) geochemical maps for metamorphic heavy minerals, copper, lead and artifacts, zinc, gold, tin, beryllium, niobium, tungsten, molybdenum, titanium, cobalt, lithium, barium, antimony-arsenic-bismuth-cadmium, thorium-cerium-monazite, and limonite; (4) mineral-occurrence maps for kyanite-sillimanite-lithium-mica-feldspar-copper-lead-zinc, gold-quartz-barite-fluorite, iron-thorium-tin-niobium, and construction materials-gemstones; (5) mineral-resource potential maps for copper-lead-zinc-combined base metals, gold, tin-tungsten, beryllium-molybdenum-niobium, lithium-kyanite- sillimanitebarite, thorium (monazite)-uranium, and construction materials; and (6) mineral-production maps. \r\n\r\nThe Charlotte quadrangle is mainly within the Piedmont physiographic province and extends from near the Coastal Plain on the southeast into the Blue Ridge province on the northwest for a short distance. Parts of six lithotectonic belts are present--the Blue Ridge, the Inner Piedmont, the Kings Mountain belt, the Charlotte belt, the Carolina slate belt, and the Wadesboro basin. Igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks are present and range in age from Proterozoic to Mesozoic; alluvial sediments of Quaternary age occur along rivers and larger streams. \r\n\r\nRocks of the Blue Ridge include Middle Proterozoic granitoid gneiss intruded by Late Proterozoic granite; Late Proterozoic paragneiss, schist, and other metasedimentary and metavolcaniclastic rocks (Ashe and Grandfather Mountain Formations); Late Proterozoic and Early Cambrian metasedimentary rocks (Chilhowee Group); and Early Cambrian sedimentary rocks (Shady Dolomite). Paleozoic granites intrude the Proterozoic rocks. The Inner Piedmont contains noncarbonate metasedimentary rocks and amphibolite of medium to high metamorphic grades. These rocks are intruded by the Toluca Granite and Henderson Gneiss of Cambrian and Ordovician(?) age. The Charlotte belt consists largely of Late Proterozoic to Late Paleozoic granitic and gabbroic plutonic rocks and intervening enclaves of metasedimentary and metavolcanic rocks. \r\n\r\nThe narrow Kings Mountain belt is located between the Charlotte and the Inner Piedmont belts and contains mainly Late Proterozoic metasedimentary rocks and plutonic rocks similar to those of the Charlotte belt. The Carolina slate belt, flanking the Charlotte belt on the east, contains weakly metamorphosed volcanic and sedimentary rocks. East of this belt, at the southeast corner of the quadrangle, is the Wadesboro basin, which has continental sedimentary rocks of Triassic age. Layered rocks westward from and in the Charlotte belt are complexly folded, are steeply dipping, and in the Blue Ridge and Inner Piedmont are contained within major thrust slices. Rocks of the Carolina slate belt are gently folded. Rocks of the Wadesboro basin occur in downfaulted blocks. \r\n\r\nThe geophysical surveys of the Charlotte quadrangle consisted of Bouguer gravity, aeromagnetic, and aeroradioactivity surveys and used both newly obtained data and information from prior work. The gravity survey disclosed a distinct northeast-trending, northwest-decreasing gradient, which is part of the major gravity gradient that extends the length of the Appalachian Mountains. Granitic plutons of the Charlotte belt, in particular, are marked by gravity lows, and gabbro plutons, by highs. Several of the geologic belts display distinct magnetic character. The aeroradioactivity surveys showed a swath of consistently high gamma-ray intensities along the central part of the Inner Piedmont belt; these high intensities correspond to the so-called monazite belt. Flow in the shallow aquifer is confined to three basins that ultimately drain into a stripmine lake. Most of the flow from the site is through a buried, pebbly sandfilled channel. Remaining flow is toward alluvium of an existing stream. Conceptual flow models for the two largest basins are used to improve definition of flow velocity and direction. Flow velocities range from about 25 to 2,500 ft/yr. Tritium was found in all three basins. The most extensive migration of tritium is coincident with buried channel. Tritium concentrations ranged from detection level to more than 300 nanocuries/L.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri864153","usgsCitation":"Garklavs, G., and Healy, R.W., 1986, Hydrogeology, ground-water flow, and tritium movement at low-level radioactive-waste disposal site near Sheffield, Illinois: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 86-4153, v, 35 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri864153.","productDescription":"v, 35 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":411452,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_36580.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":56108,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4153/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":158749,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4153/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Illinios","city":"Sheffield","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -89.796,\n 41.343\n ],\n [\n -89.796,\n 41.3360\n ],\n [\n -89.782,\n 41.3360\n ],\n [\n -89.782,\n 41.343\n ],\n [\n -89.796,\n 41.343\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a2de4b07f02db614875","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Garklavs, George","contributorId":87139,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Garklavs","given":"George","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":197789,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Healy, R.
