Water resources data for the 1985 water year for Hawaii and other Pacific Areas consist of records of stage, discharge, and water quality of streams and springs; and water levels and water quality in wells. This report, volume 1, contains discharge records for 98 gaging stations; water quality for 13 gaging stations, 100 partial-record flow stations, and 154 wells; and water levels for 39 observation wells. Also included are 108 crest-stage partial-record stations and 20 low-flow partial-record stations. Additional water data were collected at various sites, not part of the systematic data collection program, are published as miscellaneous measurements. These data represent that part of the National Water Data System operated by the U.S. Geological Survey and cooperating State, Federal, and other agencies in Hawaii.

The lake is the largest in Hernando County, enlarged by lakeshore excavation and connection to nearby ponds to an area of 360 acres at an average stage of 17.2 ft above sea level. Hunters Lake is naturally a closed lake, but development of Spring Hill has resulted in a surface water outflow from the lake in its southwest corner. Inflow to the lake could occur on the east side during extreme high-water periods. The karst terrain of the Hunters Lake area is internally drained through permeable soils, depressions, and sinkholes, and natural surface drainage is absent. The underlying Floridan aquifer system is unconfined except locally near coastal springs. Flow in the groundwater system is to the west regionally and to the southwest in the immediate area of Hunters Lake. Water level gradients in the groundwater system increase from 1.4 ft/mi east of the lake to about 8 ft/mi southwest of the lake. Hunters Lake is hydraulically connected to the groundwater system, receiving groundwater on the northeast side and losing water to the groundwater system on the southwest side. This close relationship with the groundwater system is demonstrated by graphical and numerical comparison of Hunters Lake stage with water levels in nearby groundwater sites. During 1965-84, the stage of Hunters Lake fluctuated between 12.48 and 20.7 ft above sea level. Because area lakes are all directly affected by groundwater levels, they also show a close relationship with water levels in Hunters Lake. Analysis of water quality data for Hunters Lake indicates that the water of the lake is a soft calcium bicarbonate type with ionic concentrations higher than in water from nearby shallow wells and lower than in water from the Upper Floridan aquifer. Samples collected in 1981-1983 indicate slightly higher levels of ionic concentration than in 1965-66. Distribution of specific conductance readings throughout the lake and water samples and specific conductance from upgradient sites indicates an inflow of more mineralized water into the northern part of the lake. Concentrations of nutrients, carbon, and phytoplankton in Hunters Lake are typical of lakes in this area of west-central Florida. Certain physical characteristics of soils, including permeability, available water capacity, thickness, and topographic position, have a definite effect on the hydrology of an area. They control the rate at which precipitation infiltrates or is transmitted through the soil, and thus they have a significant role in determining the rates both of ground-water recharge and surface runoff. In studies of ground-water hydrology, it commonly is useful to differentiate soils areally according to their physical characteristics and to assign values indicating the hydrologic responses of soils in the different areas.

In 1980 the U.S. Geologic Surey began a study termed the “Central Midwest Region Aquifer System Analysis,” Jorgensen and Signor, 1981). The regional aquifer system is defined as including all aquifers of Cretaceous age or older in all or parts of nine States included in this report. For part of this analysis, use of a soil-moisture model is planned to obtain estimates of actual evapotranspiraion and recharge to the regional aquifer system. Data for the hydrologic characteristics of the soils in the study area are required as input to this soil-moisture model.

The Holy Cross Wilderness (02–170), called simply \"the wilderness area\" in this report, lies in the northern Sawatch Range of Colorado. Regionally, the wilderness area lies on a strong gravity gradient that marks the northwest side of the deepest gravity low in the central United States (Behrendt and Bajwa, 1974). This low (fig. 1) reflects a series of Laramide and younger granitic intrusive bodies which are probably related genetically to the Colorado mineral belt (Tweto and Sims, 1963; Behrendt and others, 1968).

\n

The wilderness area lies on a structural dome, on which Proterozoic basement rocks have been uplifted, exhumed, and sculpted by glacial and fluvial erosional processes into spectacular alpine ridges. Steep faults bound the western edge of the dome; west of these domal border faults lies a sequence of Paleozoic sedimentary strata, which dip gently and thicken to the west. The dome is marked by an oval regional gravity high (Webring, written commun., 1985) whose shape suggests that maximum domal uplift may have occurred along or just to the east of the domal border fault complex. Map B is a generalized bedrock geologic map of the wilderness area, showing locations of faults, shear zones, and geologic units referred to in this report. Many smaller outcrops are not shown on Map B, however. For precise locations, descriptions of geologic units, and a more complete discussion of the geology of the wilderness area, see the companion map by Wallace and others (1986).

S. Geological Survey streamflow stations, the need for an effective and efficient servo-control unit tester has been paramount among field personnel. In numerous cases, servo-control unit failures were blamed on battery failures and vice versa. There was no valid instrument to definitively identify cause of failure, let alone properly diagnose the servo-control/manometer system. In 1983, two servo-control unit testers were developed and fabricated. One was mechanical in fabrication, operation, and serviceability; the other was electronic. The testers were extensively used and evaluated in Maine, Ohio, Kansas, and Louisiana under a wide range of environmental conditions. The consensus to integrate the best aspects of both testers into one instrument allowed the Survey to finally solve its long-time need for an effective, efficient servo-control unit tester. These maps (Maps A and B) show the distribution and abundance of bismuth and beryllium in the nonmagnetic fraction of heavy-mineral concentrates from stream sediments collected in the Silver City 1o x 2o quadrangle, New Mexico and Arizona. Geochemical maps showing the distribution and abundance of nine other selected key elements and the mineral flourite in the Silver City quadrangle are also part of this folio (Watts and Hassemer, 1980; Watts and others 1986a-i). These maps contribute to the assessment of mineral resources within Silver City 1o x 2o quadrangle by (1) showing regional patterns of elements enriched in heavy-mineral concentrates, thereby providing clues to regional patterns of mineralization; (2) showing new areas containing enriched metals, not previously known from mining activity; and (3) providing supportive data to the interpretive and summary maps (Watts and Hassmer, 1986) and the mineral resource assessment (Richter and others, 1983). The Beaver Creek Wilderness occupies an area of 4,791 acres within the cliffline bordering the Beaver Creek drainage in McCreary County, southeastern Kentucky. It is in the Daniel Boone National Forest and includes part of the Beaver Creek Cooperative Wildlife Management Area, which is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. The area is located about 11 mi southeast of Burnside, Ky., and is accessible from the north and south via U.S. Route 27 and Forest Service Road 50, located at its northwest border (index map). From the east, the area can be reached via State Route 90 and Forest Service Road 46, located at the eastern edge of the area. Access by foot into the interior is provided by an abandoned Forest Service road and by several primitive trails that extend along the major streams.

The Beaver Creek Wilderness is located at the western edge of the Appalachian coal region and is within the highly dissected Cumberland Plateau section of the Appalachian Plateaus physiographic province. It is drained by Beaver Creek and its tributaries, which flow northeastward into Lake Cumberland, a .reservoir on the Cumberland River about 1 mi north of the wilderness. Altitudes range from about 730 ft on the lower part of Beaver Creek to about 1,200 ft at its headwaters.
