Rocks were separated into: Fox Hills-lower Hell Creek aquifer (layer 1), upper Hell Creek confining layer (layer 2), Tullock aquifer (layer 3), Lebo confining layer (layer 4), and Tongue River aquifer (layer 5). Aquifer transmissivities were estimated from ratios of sand and shale and adjusted for kinematic viscosity and compaction. Vertical hydraulic conductance per unit area between layers was estimated. Potentiometric surface maps were drawn from limited data. A three-dimensional finite-difference model was used for simulation. Five stages of simulation decreased and standard error of estimate for hydraulic head from 135 to 110 feet for 739 observation nodes. The resulting mean transmissivities for layers 1-5 were 443, 191, 374, 217, and 721 sq ft/d. The corresponding mean vertical hydraulic conductances per unit area between the layers were simulated; they ranged from 0.000140 to 0.0000150. Mean annual recharge across the study area was about 0.26 percent of average annual precipitation. The test hole penetrated two major aquifer systems above a depth of 1,000 ft and another major aquifer system and aquifer below 1,000 ft. The deepest aquifer system found in the test drilling, the Lower Patapsco aquifer system, is comprised of a group of sands which lie between 1,140 ft and the base of the Patapsco Formation at 1,417 ft. The Waldorf aquifer system, overlies the Upper Patapsco aquifer system and includes sands in the Waldorf/La Plata area that are referred to as the ' Magothy aquifer ' by other. At the test well site, the Waldorf aquifer system consists solely of sands in the Magothy and Monmouth Formations. The three major aquifer systems and the Middle Patapsco aquifer are correlative along the regional strike for at least 10 miles in the Waldorf/La Plata area. Correlations of geophysical logs indicate that individual sands 15 to 25 ft thick can be traced between wells. Geophysical log correlations also indicate that, at some well sites, the Waldorf aquifer system and the Upper Patapsco aquifer system are in sand-on-sand contact and function as one major hydrologic system at these sites. A production well (Ch-Bf 147) was drilled at the site of the test well (Ch-Bf 146). The initial static water level of these aquifers was 9.8 ft below sea level. Evaluation of the 24-hr pumping test of Ch-Bf 147 resulted in a transmissivity of 14,000 gpd/ft (gallons per day per foot) for the first 2 hours of the test and 7,300 gpd/ft for the remainder of the test. The decrease of 6,700 gpd/ft in the transmissivity indicates that the well 's expanding cone of depression intersected a transmissivity boundary after 2 hours of pumping. The Patapsco sands tested in Ch-Bf 147 have a storage coefficient of 0.0016. The hydraulic conductivity of the producing sands in Ch-Bf 147 is 127 gpd/sq ft. The quality of groundwater from the Lower Patapsco aquifer system and the Middle Patapsco aquifer is suitable for most purposes. The water is nearly neutral (pH = 7.4), low in dissolved solids (about 200 mg/L), low in specific conductance, slightly warm (22 C), very soft, naturally fluoridated, and moderately high in dissolved silica. The study area is about 400 sq mi of Missouri River flood plain used mainly for agricultural purposes and is located mostly in parts of Woodbury and Monona Counties, Iowa. The reconnaissance was conducted to determine the extent of hydrologic information available for the study area and to determine if the existing data base is sufficient to support an interpretive investigation to quantify the groundwater/surface water relationships in the area. Extensive information concerning the surface water resources of the area, particularly the Missouri River, is available. Very little information concerning the geometry, hydraulic characteristics and groundwater flow relationships in the alluvial aquifer is available. Information needs to be collected to create an adequate data base for future simulation of groundwater flow and to calibrate any estimates of flow. The map documents the lasting visual effects these operations have on this arid region and provides a data base for monitoring changes in the extent of visual disturbances in the future.
\n
The first training operation was initiated in April 1942, by General George S. Patton, Jr., to ready armored-vehicle divisions for desert warfare in North Africa (Meller, 1946). The Desert Training Center (DTC) encompassed 17,500 mi2 of arid lands in California, Nevada, and Arizona, and for two years, more than one million soldiers trained under simulated battle conditions. Troops were stationed at 12 main base camps, each housing as many as 15,000 soldiers in canvas tents. From these camps, armored units would radiate into the broad valleys of the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. Thousands of tanks, trucks, jeeps, and aircraft were used in the war games. When the DTC was inactivated in May 1944, most man-made structures were removed or buried by the U.S. Army.
\n
The second operation, called Operation Desert Strike, was held for two weeks in May 1964 (Moenk, 1964) in the same general area as the DTC. However, no temporary camps were established, and the tanks used were much larger than their World War II counterparts. Over 89,000 troops participated in this exercise.
\n
Land disturbances caused by these training exercises are still evident today throughout the designated training areas (Lathrop, 1983; Prose, 1985; Prose and Metzger, 1985). Such a map enables the user to make a rapid evaluation of the potential for mass movement. Furthermore, detailed slope movement inventory of this type can serve as a framework for statistical analyses of several factors that cause slope failures, such as the effects of bedrock lithology, soil and slope characteristics, and precipitation. Planners, engineers, soil scientists, geologists, and elected officials should find the map useful in the assessment of slope hazards and planning for future land use. Final evaluation of any site within the quadrangle should be based on an examination by a soils engineer or an engineering geologist.
\n
Field investigations in the springs of 1981 and 1982 and the fall of 1981 involved nearly 60 days of traverses. The foot traverses were supplemented by the interpretation of the land surface on vertical black-and-white aerial photography flown in January and February of 1973 at a scale of nearly 1:24,000. Earlier aerial photography flown in June and July 1939 at a scale of 1:20,000 and more recent but significantly smaller scale photography (1:80,000) flown in June 1977 supplied additional documentation. More than 1,200 active or recently active and 900 older slope movements were identified.
\n
The geologic map of the Oak Forest quadrangle (Roen, 1972) is one of several geologic maps at a scale of 1:24,000 in eastern and central Greene County. Stone (1932) wrote an earlier report of the geology and mineral resources of Greene County. A series of reconnaissance landslide maps at 1:24,000 scale based mainly on aerial photographic interpretation included Greene and adjacent counties (Hackman and Thomas, 1978).
\n
Selection of the Oak Forest quadrangle for a more comprehensive study of the slope movements was based on the existence of a recent geologic map (Roen, 1972), sizeable tracts of both forested and non-forested land, nearby precipitation record stations, a large number of pipelines which could offer pertinent data, and good accessibility of terrain from secondary roads. Finally, Hackman and Thomas (1978) showed that the area was representative of any quadrangle in the northern part of the Dunkard basin in its distribution and density of slope movements.
\n
The quadrangle is located about 65 km southwest of Pittsburgh, Penn. (fig. 1). Three distinct drainage systems (north, east, and south trending) are represented within the quadrangle (fig. 2).
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/mf1794","usgsCitation":"Pomeroy, J.S., 1986, Map showing slope movements in the Oak Forest Quadrangle, Greene County, southwestern Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Miscellaneous Field Studies Map 1794, Plate: 47.33 x 41.52 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mf1794.","productDescription":"Plate: 47.33 x 41.52 inches","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":326201,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/mf1794.JPG"},{"id":327414,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mf/1794/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"0","country":"United States","state":"Pennsylvania","county":"Greene County","otherGeospatial":"Oak Forest Quadrangle","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -80.25,39.75 ], [ -80.25,39.8675 ], [ -80.11749999999999,39.8675 ], [ -80.11749999999999,39.75 ], [ -80.25,39.75 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b12e4b07f02db6a2a7b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pomeroy, J.
