The first major earthquake (magnitude 7.0-7.9) of the year was on January 11 in the Philippine Islands. the second major quake, on January 18 in the Aegean Sea, was followed by several other earthquakes which caused injuries or damage in other parts of the world.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>In the United States, a number of earthquakes occurred, but only minor damage was reported. Arkansas experienced a swarm of earthquakes beginning on January 12. The first and largest was a magnitude 7.7 on September 1 in the Samoa Islands region in the South Pacific. A magnitude 7.2 occurred on October 16 off the coast of central Chile. The third, on October 25 in Michoacan, Mexico, had a magnitude of 7.1. Two earthquakes which caused fatalities were in Kashmir and Venezuela, on September 12 and October 18. They had magnitudes 6.1 and 5.4, respectively.&nbsp;</p>\n<p>In the United States, a number of earthquakes were experienced during the 2 months, but caused only lsight damage. Official institutions in charge of the study of seismological and geophysical aspects of such large natural events have a responsibility to provide engineers, planners, and government&nbsp;officials with basic data to implement safety measures to minimize the destructive impact of great earthquakes. The Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP) is one such institution.</p>\n<p>The interest of the scientific community in earthquake studies has been high in Peru for a long period of time. In contrast, the negineering and social aspects of earthquakes have been studied only for the past decade.</p>\n<p>In retrospect, the Peruvian national long-range earthquake-study program began after the catastrophic earthquake of May 31, 1970. This earthquake triggered a large snow avalanche from Huascaran mountain, killing over 60,000 people, and covering with mud small cities and tens of villages in the Andean valley of Callejon de Huaylas, Huaraz. Since then, great efforts have been made to learn about the natural seismic environment and its engineering and social aspects. The site is underlain by 175 m of unconsolidated generally coarse-grained, alluvial-fan and flood-plain deposits. In response to the volcanic activity, the U.S. Geological Survey intensified statewide surface and ground water sampling programs to determine the nature and magnitude of the volcanic-induced variations. Streams to the east of Mount St. Helens received the major ash fallout. Chemical effects were best noted in smaller streams sampled 60 to 70 miles northeast of Mount St. Helens. The chemical variations observed were pronounced but short lived. Sulfate and chloride increases in anionic composition were prevalent immediately following the eruption however, the original bicarbonate predominance was again attained within several days. Suspended iron and aluminum concentrations were similarly elevated during the period of greatest ash deposition (highest turbidity) however, the dissolved concentrations remained relatively constant. Depressions of pH were minor and short lived. Streams draining to the south, tributaries to the Columbia river, showed little observable changes in water chemistry. Streams draining to the west (Toutle river and its tributaries) were compositionally affected by the various volcanic activities. Chloride and sulfate anion percentage exceeded the bicarbonate percentage up to one month following the eruption</span><span> period. Streams and lakes sampled in the immediate vicinity of Mount St. Helens, in addition to trace metals, contained organic compounds derived from decomposing wood buried in the debris deposits. Wisconsin's wetlands OCCUf in depressions and on slopes. They may be in contact with ground water or totally surface-water supported. Hydrologically, wetlands may be classed as surface-water depression, surface-water slope, ground-water depression, or ground-water slope wetlands. Precipitation comprises more than half of the inflow to all but the ground-water slope wetlands, where ground water may provide as much as 90 percent of the inflow. Flood peaks may be as much as 80 percent lower in basins with much wetland area than in similar basins with little or no wetland area. Ground-water recharge appears to be less in basins with much wetland area than in basins with little or no wetland area. Wetlands retain sediment, and sediment loads in streams draining basins with much wetland area may be 90 percent lower than those in streams draining basins with little or no wetland The location of the saltwater-freshwater interface for both streams was described by multiple regression equations involving streamflow and tide stage. Low-flow frequency data were used with regression relationships to show the effect of withdrawals of freshwater from the Alafia River on the location of the saltwater interface. Examples are presented without storage and with storage and minimum streamflow requirements. In every case, the effect of reductions in streamflow was upstream encroachment of saltwater. Salinity in Hillsborough Bay in the vicinity of the Alafia River and Bullfrog Creek was evaluated using a salt-transport model for various freshwater inflow conditions. Model results indicate that freshwater inflow from these streams has the greatest effect on the salinity of areas closest to the mouth during periods of above average inflow. A public water supply system supplies water for human consumption and other domestic uses. It can be publicly or privately owned and includes systems supplying water to cities, subdivisions, federal installations, summer homes, and camping areas. The data were collected through questionnaires mailed to the various public water suppliers in the state. The public suppliers and their data listed in this report are not complete but will be expanded as more water utility personnel respond to the questionnaire. Through telephone and personal visits, attempts were made to verify those data which seemed inconsistent with water data collected in other areas of the state. While the degree of confidence in the accuracy of the data is believed to be good, some caution should be exercised in its interpretation. In most cases, the information submitted is only as good as the water measuring devices or personal estimations of the public water supply personnel.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Utah Reports in this series, prepared cooperatively by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Utah Division of Water Resources, provide data to enable interested parties to keep abreast of changing ground-water conditions.</p><p>This report, like the others in the series, contains information on well construction, ground-water withdrawals from wells, water-level changes, and related changes in precipitation and streamflow. Supplementary data such as graphs showing chemical quality of water and maps showing water-table configuration are included in reports of this series only for those years or areas for which applicable data are available and are important to a discussion of changing ground-water conditions.</p><p>This report includes individual discussions of selected major areas of ground-water development in the State for the calendar year 1980. Water-level fluctuations, however, are described for the period spring 1980 to spring 1981.
