This retardation of sulfate reduction diminishes the effectiveness of sulfate as an oxidizing agent. Consequently, as cooling proceeds, the reducing effect of H<sub>2</sub>S (and other reduced species) is not balanced with the oxidizing effect of SO (super -2) <sub>4</sub> to the same extent as at higher temperatures. The result is a progressively more reducing solution, which is precisely what is needed to precipitate reduced uranium minerals and to generate the paragenetic sequence observed in these deposits. The same mechanism may apply to other types of epithermal deposits.","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","publisherLocation":"Littleton, CO","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.76.8.2236","usgsCitation":"Spirakis, C.S., 1981, The possible role of sulfate-reduction kinetics in the formation of hydrothermal uranium deposits: Economic Geology, v. 76, no. 8, p. 2236-2239, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.76.8.2236.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"2236","endPage":"2239","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":267293,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"76","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1981-12-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"511b728ce4b0e3ef7b6f1e72","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Spirakis, Charles S.","contributorId":97111,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Spirakis","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":473499,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Precipitation ranges from 35 to 50 inches per year across the outcrop area, which is well suited to allow high rates of infiltration. The aquifer contains an estimated 31,600,000 acre-feet of water having less than 1,000 milligrams per liter dissolved solids. The average saturated sand thickness is 250 feet. Aquifer tests in the confined part of the aquifer give an average storage coefficient of 0.0005 and an average transmissivity of 1,480 feet squared per day. The estimated specific yield of the unconfined part of the aquifer is 0.15; the transmissivity has not been determined. Large-capacity wells tapping the aquifer commonly yield 100 to 500 gallons per minute; the maximum measured yield is 1,700 gallons per minute. Water usage from the aquifer is very small owing to the availability of an abundance of surface water. Water quality throughout the central and northern part of the aquifer is generally acceptable for municipal use. A few wells, however, yield water containing concentrations of iron and manganese exceeding the limit recommended for municipal use by the National Academy of Sciences and National Academy of Engineering (1972).","language":"English","publisher":"Oklahoma Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","collaboration":"Prepared by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with the Oklahoma Geological Survey","usgsCitation":"Hart, D.L., and Davis, R.E., 1981, Geohydrology of the Antlers aquifer (Cretaceous), southeastern Oklahoma: Circular 81, iv, 33 p.: Map: 1 Sheet: 47 x 22 inches.","productDescription":"iv, 33 p.: Map: 1 Sheet: 47 x 22 inches","numberOfPages":"38","costCenters":[{"id":472,"text":"New Mexico Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":272907,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70046131.jpg"},{"id":272906,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://www.ogs.ou.edu/pubsscanned/CircularsPlates/C81PI.pdf"},{"id":272904,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.ogs.ou.edu/pubsscanned/Circulars/circular81mm.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oklahoma","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -103.0,33.6158 ], [ -103.0,37.0 ], [ -94.4307,37.0 ], [ -94.4307,33.6158 ], [ -103.0,33.6158 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"51a5d1e8e4b0605bc571efb5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hart, Donald L. Water supplies for this area are obtained from the Rio Grande and from the saturated sediments filling the intermontane basins of south-central New Mexico.

The two major aquifers are the Santa Fe Group of Miocene to middle Pleistocene age and the flood-plain alluvium of late Pleistocene and Holocene age. The Santa Fe Group is composed of thick deposits of interbedded clay, silt, sand, and gravel. The flood-plain alluvium, generally less than 80 feet thick, is composed of a basal gravel layer overlain by interbedded sand, silt, and clay.

In the Rincon Valley, the flood-plain alluvium is the principal source of ground water because the underlying Santa Fe is composed predominantly of lacustrine clay deposits. In the Mesilla Valley, thick deposits of fluvial sands and gravels in the Santa Fe Group are hydraulically connected with the flood-plain alluvium. Water-table conditions occur in the flood-plain alluvium, which is recharged primarily by infiltration of surface water from the Rio Grande, irrigation canals, and irrigated fields. Recharge to the Santa Fe Group occurs primarily from downward infiltration of water from the flood-plain alluvium and secondarily from runoff infiltrating upland sediments and mountain-front fan deposits. In the short term, the Santa Fe Group responds as a leaky confined aquifer due to the presence of interbedded clays that reduce vertical permeability.

Aquifer tests were conducted on 58 wells and test holes, most of which were completed in the Santa Fe Group. Transmissivities range from 1.3 to 21,100 feet squared per day. Average well yields range from about 1,050 gallons per minute in the Rincon Valley to about 1,500 gallons per minute in the Mesilla Valley. Yields in the Jornada del Muerto generally are much smaller.

Movement of ground water is generally southward in the Rincon and Mesilla Valleys and toward the valleys in the adjacent upland areas. Ground water moves southeastward beneath the West Mesa area, converging with ground-water flow in the southern end of the Mesilla Valley. Good hydraulic connection exists between sediments of the West Mesa and Mesilla Valley areas. Ground water in the southern end of the Jornada del Muerto moves generally to the northwest, converges with south-flowing ground water near Point of Rocks, and moves westward into Rincon Valley sediments near Rincon. A small amount of ground water flows westward from the southern end of the Jornada del Muerto across a subsurface igneous body into the Mesilla Valley. Ground-water discharge occurs throughout the Rincon and Mesilla Valleys as drain flow to the river and evapotranspiration.

Dissolved-solids concentrations in the water in the flood-plain alluvium of the Rincon and Mesilla Valleys are generally greater than 1,000 milligrams per liter. A freshwater zone, with dissolved-solids concentrations less than 1,000 milligrams per liter, underlies this thin, slightly saline zone beneath much of the Mesilla Valley. This freshwater zone, occurring in the Santa Fe Group, is surrounded by saline water. Within the study area, major dissolved ions in ground water include sodium, calcium, bicarbonate, and sulfate.

The Rio Grande is a gainlng stream in the northern parts of the Rincon and Mesilla Valleys and a losing stream in the southern part of the Mesilla Valley. Gains and losses result from a close interconnection with ground-water flow systems. Large surface-water irrigation allotments increase ground-water recharge. Increased recharge raises ground-water levels and improves shallow ground-water quality adjacent to these recharge areas. Shallow ground-water discharges to drains, which flow into the Rio Grande. Dissolved-solids concentrations in the Rio Grande increase by as much as 60 percent between Caballo Reservoir and the southern end of the study area.
","language":"English","publisher":"New Mexico State Engineer","publisherLocation":"Santa Fe, NM","collaboration":"Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with: New Mexico State Engineer Office; U.S. Bureau of Reclamation; Elephant Butte Irrigation District; City of Las Cruces; New Mexico Water Resources Research Institute","usgsCitation":"Wilson, C.A., White, R., Orr, B.R., and Roybal, R.G., 1981, Water resources of the Rincon and Mesilla Valleys and adjacent areas, New Mexico: Technical Report 43, ix, 514 p.; Plates: 1-16: 24 x 38 inches.","productDescription":"ix, 514 p.; Plates: 1-16: 24 x 38 inches","numberOfPages":"540","costCenters":[{"id":472,"text":"New Mexico Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":265519,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70042517.JPG"},{"id":265518,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.ose.state.nm.us/Pub/TechnicalReports/TechReport-043.pdf","text":"Report","size":"24.36 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","otherGeospatial":"Mesilla Valley, Rincon Valley","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -109.05,31.33 ], [ -109.05,37.0 ], [ -103.0,37.0 ], [ -103.0,31.33 ], [ -109.05,31.33 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd7ccee4b0b2908510eff0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wilson, Clyde A.","contributorId":65464,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wilson","given":"Clyde","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":471680,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"White, Robert R.","contributorId":16420,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"White","given":"Robert R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":471678,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Orr, Brennon R.","contributorId":18747,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Orr","given":"Brennon","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":471679,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Roybal, R. The purposes of this series of studies are (1) to analyze available hydrologic data and describe the hydrologic system, (2) to evaluate existing and potential water-resources development, and (3) to identify additional studies that might be needed. Part 1 of this report gives an estimate of recharge and discharge, an estimate of the potential for water-resources development, and a statement on the quality of water in the southern Great Salt Lake Desert part of west-central Utah. Part 2 deals with the same aspects of west-central Utah as a whole. Part 2 also summarizes the evidence of interbasin ground-water flow in west-central Utah and presents a theory for the origin of the water discharged from Fish Springs.","language":"English","publisher":"Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","collaboration":"Prepared by the United States It includes about 1,300 square miles (3,370 square kilometers) in the upper Virgin River basin and about 650 square miles (1,680 square kilometers) in the upper Kanab Creek basin. The area is sparsely populated with Kanab (population about 1,400 in 1975) being the largest community. Although the area is largely agricultural, it is known to contain large coal reserves with potential for development.","language":"English","publisher":"Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","collaboration":"Prepared by the United States Geological Survey in cooperation with The Utah Department of Natural Resources Division of Water Rights","usgsCitation":"Cordova, R., 1981, Ground-water conditions in the upper Virgin River and Kanab Creek basins area, Utah, with emphasis on the Navajo sandstone: Technical Publication 70, vi, 87 p.","productDescription":"vi, 87 p.","numberOfPages":"98","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":267713,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":331987,"rank":3,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.waterrights.utah.gov/cgi-bin/libview.exe?Modinfo=Viewpub&LIBNUM=20-5-670"},{"id":267712,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://waterrights.utah.gov/docSys/v920/w920/w920009w.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"Iron County, Kane County, Washington County","otherGeospatial":"Kanab Creek Basin, Virgin River Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -113.291015625,\n              37.046408899699564\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.291015625,\n              37.82280243352756\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.87377929687499,\n              37.82280243352756\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.87377929687499,\n              37.046408899699564\n            ],\n            [\n              -113.291015625,\n              37.046408899699564\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5124ad3be4b0b6328103b420","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cordova, R.M.","contributorId":77511,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cordova","given":"R.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":474174,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Precipitation over this area averaged 44 inches per year during 1931-60. In this period, an additional 3,800 billion gallons of water per year entered the basin in the main stem of the Connecticut River at the Massachusetts state line, about 230 billion gallons per year in the Farmington River at Tariffville, and about 10 billion gallons per year in the Seantic River at the Massachusetts state line. Some water was also imported from outside the basin by water-supply systems. About half the precipitation, 22.2 inches, was lost from the basin by evapotranspiration; the remainder flowed out of the study area in the Connecticut River at Portland.
\n
\n
Variations in streamflow at 41 long-term continuous-record gaging stations are summarized in standardized graphs and tables that can be used to estimate streamflow characteristics at other sites. For example, mean-flow and two low-flow characteristics: (1) the 7-day annual minimum flow for 2-year and (2) 10-year recurrence intervals, have been determined for many partial-record stations throughout the basin.
\n
\n
Of the 30 principal lakes, ponds, and reservoirs, two have usable storage capacities of more than 1 billion gallons. The maximum safe draft rate (regulated flow) of the largest of these, Shenipsit Lake at Rockville, is 6.5 million gallons per day for the 2-year and 30-year recurrence intervals (median and lowest annual flow).
\n
\n
Floods have occurred within each month of the year but in different years. The greatest known flood on the Connecticut River was in March 1936; it had a peak flow of 130,000 cubic feet per second at Hartford. Since then, major floods have been reduced by flood-control measures.
\n
\n
The major aquifers underlying the basin are composed of unconsolidated materials (stratified drift and till) and bedrock. Stratified drift overlies till and bedrock in valleys and lowlands in the eastern and western parts and in most of the broad central valley. The stratified drift generally ranges in thickness from 10 feet in small valleys to more than 200 feet in the Connecticut River Valley. Bedrock underlies the entire basin and is composed of (1) interbedded sedimentary and igneous rocks and (2) crystalline rocks.
\n
\n
Ground-water sources yield from several million gallons per day from large well fields to 1 gallon per minute from single wells. Yields of 100 gal/min or more are most commonly obtained from screened wells tapping stratified-drift aquifers; amounts can be calculated by use of a series of graphs in conjunction with estimates of aquifer transmissivity and thickness. Eighteen areas underlain by good aquifers are selected as the most favorable locations for large-scale development of ground water. Selection of these areas is based on estimates of aquifer characteristics and the amount of water potentially available from induced infiltration of streamflow at low-flow conditions.
\n
\n
Small to moderate water supplies can generally be obtained from any of the aquifers. Wells in bedrock yield at least a few gallons per minute at most sites. The probability of obtaining an adequate yield for domestic supply is greater in sedimentary than in crystalline bedrock and is also greater in stratified-drift overburden than in till.
\n
\n
Where unaffected by man's activities, the water is of the calcium magnesium bicarbonate type, is generally low to moderate in dissolved-solids concentration, and ranges from soft to hard. In general, streamflow is less mineralized than ground water, particularly when it consists largely of direct runoff. However, streams become more highly mineralized during low-flow conditions, when most flow consists of more highly mineralized water discharged from aquifers. The median dissolved-solids concentration in water from 25 stream sites was 113 mg/L (milligrams per liter) during high flow, and 148 mg/L during low flow within the study period. Iron and manganese occur naturally in objectionable concentrations in some streams draining swamps and in some waters draining from sedimentary bedrock which contains iron- and manganese-bearing minerals.
\n
\n
Man's activities have affected the water quality of streams in much of the area, particularly in the Hockanum and Park River basins. The degradation in quality in these streams is shown by wide and erratic changes in dissolved-solids concentration, excessive amounts of trace elements, a low dissolved-oxygen content, and abnormally high temperatures. Ground water within this area is degraded principally by induced infiltration of surface water that contains chemical wastes, by leachate from wastes stored or disposed of on the ground, and by effluents discharged from septic tanks.
\n
\n
The quantity and quality of water are satisfactory for a wide variety of uses, and, with suitable treatment, the water may be used for most purposes. The total amount of water used in 1968 was more than 100 billion gallons. About 80 percent of this was used for industrial purposes, and 90 percent of the industrial water was obtained from surface-water sources. About 85 percent of the population was supplied with water for domestic use by 15 major public and municipal systems and 25 private associations. Analyses of water from the 13 largest systems show generally good quality.
","language":"English","publisher":"Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection","collaboration":"Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection","usgsCitation":"Ryder, R.B., Thomas, M.P., and Weiss, L.A., 1981, Water resources inventory of Connecticut Part 7: upper Connecticut River basin: Connecticut Water Resources Bulletin 24, Report: vii, 76 p.; 4 Plates: 37.33 x 50.45 inches and smaller.","productDescription":"Report: vii, 76 p.; 4 Plates: 37.33 x 50.45 inches and smaller","numberOfPages":"83","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":258813,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0024/report.pdf","size":"17112","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":258814,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/ctwrb/0024/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"48000","country":"United States","state":"Connecticut","otherGeospatial":"Connecticut River Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -72.833333,41.533333 ], [ -72.833333,42.058333 ], [ -72.366667,42.058333 ], [ -72.366667,41.533333 ], [ -72.833333,41.533333 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bc907e4b08c986b32cc15","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ryder, Robert B. rryder@usgs.gov","contributorId":68294,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ryder","given":"Robert","email":"rryder@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":463828,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Thomas, Mendall P.","contributorId":104314,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thomas","given":"Mendall","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":463830,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Weiss, Lawrence A.","contributorId":102528,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Weiss","given":"Lawrence","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":463829,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Bottom depths at the 11 locations sampled ranged from 3 to 12 m and substrate size from boulders to sand. Periphyton (Cladophora and associated biota) was several millimeters thick at most stations but sparse at the shallowest. The most eggs recovered from a single sample occurred at the shallowest depth (3 m). In both years, some of the small numbers of eggs collected (9 in 1978, 14 in 1979) were alive and fertilized. Laboratory incubation of viable eggs resulted in successful hatching of larvae. When compared with egg densities measured at spawning sites used by self-sustaining populations of lake trout in other lakes, densities in the study are (0-13/m2) appeared to be critically low. Insufficient numbers of eggs, combined with harsh incubation conditions (turbulence, ice scour, sedimentation), were implicated as prime causes for lake trout reproductive failure in the study area, although other factors, such as inappropriate spawning behavior (selection of suboptimal spawning location, depth, or substrate) also may have reduced survival of eggs and larvae.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"North American Journal of Fisheries Management","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","publisherLocation":"Philadelphia, PA","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1981)1<165:SCAAOL>2.0.CO;2","collaboration":"Abstract has subscript/superscript to be fixed","usgsCitation":"Dorr, J.A., O’Connor, D.V., Foster, N.R., and Jude, D.J., 1981, Substrate conditions and abundance of lake trout eggs in a traditional spawning area in southeastern Lake Michigan: North American Journal of Fisheries Management, v. 1, no. 2, p. 165-172, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1981)1<165:SCAAOL>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"165","endPage":"172","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":480557,"rank":10000,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://hdl.handle.net/2027.42/140994","text":"External Repository"},{"id":258943,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":258940,"rank":9999,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1981)1<165:SCAAOL>2.0.CO;2","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Lake Michigan","volume":"1","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9d5ae4b08c986b31d7ce","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dorr, John A.
