This research is currently being complemented by a similar study in Central California along the West side of the Sierra Nevada, using CalNet stations. 2) A theoretical study of dispersion and attenuation of elastic waves due to multiple scattering from inhomogeneities. This is essentially a first step toward an interpretative model of high frequency apparent attenuation properties in the crust in Southern California. 3) An analysis of anisotropic P<sub>n</sub> velocities near the big&nbsp;bend of the San Andreas fault, which provides some constraints on the nature of the plate boundary between Pacific and North America below the crust.</p><p>Other projects are being pursued, which include: 1) the statistical analysis of S wave routine picks on CEDAR to constrain estimates of the Poisson ratio in the crust, 2) an effort to use P/SV amplitude ratio to constrain focal mechanism for local events, and 3) a study of frequency content of signals from foreshocks and aftershocks of the October 15, 1979 Imperial Valley earthquake. Preliminary findings along these lines will be reported at the Fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union. This research is continuing under Contract #14-08-0001-19270, together with continued efforts to characterize historical and recent seismicity in California. We confine the following report to projects already completed or nearing completion.</p><p><br data-mce-bogus=\"1\"></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological The model is divided into two units. The lower unit is confined in the western part of the study area by a confining clay bed; elsewhere in this unit the aquifer is unconfined. The upper unit represents an unconfined aquifer and lies above the clay bed or its extension. Where the clay bed is absent the upper and lower units are considered as a single aquifer. The model, as calibrated, can evaluate with reasonable accuracy the effects on water levels of changing stresses and stress patterns only within the area of primary interest for the upper unit. In other areas of the upper unit and for the lower unit, predicted changes should be looked upon as, at best, representing only general trends. The details of the formulation of the model, testing of its validity, and the results of predictions are discussed in the cited report. This report was prepared as part of a cooperative program with the Utah Department of Natural Resources, Division of Water Rights, to investigate the water resources of the State. It is an addendum to the principal interpretive report, and it is presented in order to make the model available to anyone desiring to use it for additional predictions. </p><p>The main program used was the finite-difference model for aquifer simulation in two dimensions documented by Trescott, Pinder, and Larson, (1976). Minor modifications were made to adapt the program to the principal ground-water reservoir in the Beryl-Enterprise area. All the modifications are listed at the top of table 1, and were related to parameter input and output, thus none of the computational subroutines were affected. The parameter arrays (table 1) and map of the area with a grid overlay (pi. 1) are given on following pages. </p><p>The model simulates an aquifer- under water-table conditions, mostly composed of unconsoliuated basin-fill deposits. The boundaries of the modeled area (pi. 1) generally coincide with the boundaries of the saturated basin fill. However, in the southwest-central part of the model, permeable consolidated rock is included; and that part of the northern boundary between the Black and Wah Wah Mountains is an arbitrary boundary in basin fill between the Beryl-Enterprise area and the Milford area that lies to the northeast. The ignimbrite at Table Butte also was included in the active part of the model. The model includes simulation of discharge by evapotranspiration from phreatophytes. </p><p>The areal recharge array was used to simulate recharge entering the modeled area at its boundaries and from stream infiltration in the southern corner near Enterprise. In addition, this array included discharge by wells operated during the period simulated as being under steady-state conditions (virtually 1937), and discharging wells simulating flow of water northeast to the Milford area. These wells also were included in the transient-state simulation (1937-77), although any changes in this discharge were modeled using the pumpage array (Group IV, table 1). The wells simulating outflow to the Milford area are shown on plate 1, but the wells pumping in 1937 are not shown unless they also were pumped during 1937-77. </p><p>The pumpage array was used to simulate: (1) Discharge from wells, (2) discharge after 1977 from a mine in the southwest-central part of the model and recharge resulting form the mine discharge (pi. 1), and (3) changes in discharge in wells operated during the steady-state period. Recharge from irrigation was simulated by reducing pumpage from nodes where irrigation&nbsp;occurs. Discharge from all wells was reduced by 5 percent by multiplying all pumpage by 0.95 in the computer program. The model preserves the first and second order moment properties of the historical flow series, including significant autocorrelations within each station and cross-correlations between the stations. Higher order moments are preserved by a transformation technique that allows the residuals from the model to be approximately normal. An algorithm is given for simulation of combined-stations flows, and some simulations are carried out to determine the likelihood of specified flow shortages that could be detrimental to the wildlife habitat in the reach of the Platte River between Overton and Grand Island. The detailed study of these earthquakes provides a tool for gaining insight into the tectonic and physical processes responsible for the generation of damaging earthquakes. This catalog contains the fundamental parameters for earthquakes located within and adjacent to the seismograph network operated by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), during the third quarter of 1977.</p><p>The motivation for these detailed studies has been described by Pakiser and others (1969) and by Eaton and others (1970). Similar catalogs of earthquakes for the years 1969, 1970, and 1971 have been prepared by Lee and others (1972b, c and d). Catalogs for the first, second, third, and fourth quarters of 1972 and the first, second, third and fourth quarters of 1973 have been prepared by Wesson and others (1972a, b, 1973b, and 1974a and b), by Bufe and others (1975), and by Lester and others (1976a and b). Catalogs for the years 1974, 1975 and 1976 and the first quarter of 1977 have been prepared by Lester and Meagher (1978), by McHugh and Lester (1978 and 1979) and by Marks and Lester (1980a and 1980b). The basic data contained in these catalogs provide a foundation for further studies.</p><p>This catalog contains data on 855 earthquakes in central California. Arrival times at 205 seismograph stations were used to locate the earthquakes listed in this catalog. Of these 193 were telemetered stations operated by USGS. Readings from the remaining 12 stations were obtained through the courtesy of the Seismographic Stations, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, University of California, Berkeley (UCB), and the California Department of Water Resources, Sacramento.</p><p>The Seismographic Station of the University of California, Berkeley, has for many years published a bulletin describing earthquakes in northern California and the surrounding area and listing readings at UCB stations from more distant events. About 70 percent of the project funding was used to acquire radar imagery and to evaluate Alaskan applications. Results of these studies indicate that radar images have a unique incremental value for certain geologic and cartographic applications but that the images are best suited for use as supplemental information sources or as primary data sources in areas of persistent cloud cover.</p><p>The value of radar data is greatest for geologic mapping and resource surveys, particularly for mineral and petroleum exploration, where the objective is to locate any single feature or group of features that may control the occurrences of these resources. Radar images are considered by oil and gas companies to be worth the cost of data acquisition within a limited area of active exploration.</p><p>Radar images also have incremental value for geologic site studies and hazard mapping. The need in these cases is TO inventory all geologic hazards to human life, property, resources, and the environment. For other geologic applications, radar images have a relatively small incremental value over a combination of Landsat images and aerial photographs.</p><p>The value of radar images for cartographic applications is minimal, except when they are used as a substitute for aerial photographs and topographic maps in persistently cloud-covered areas. If conventional data sources are not available, radar images provide useful information on terrain relief, landforms, drainage patterns, and land cover. Screen less lithography is a low-cost method of reproducing the images. </p><p>The images from modern, commercially available radar systems have good visual quality; they also have better geometric accuracy and higher information content than images from older systems. Images from modern systems, however, also have some of the same disadvantages as those from older systems. The most serious problem is that considerable information is lost in the process of recording the radar return on film. Another problem is that the oblique radar view of the landscape results in interpretations that are biased by look direction. A compromise antenna depression angle also commonly results in inadequate or excessive shadowing in parts of the image. The rocks are Archean in age; they predate a major Precambrian orogeny that affected all of southwestern Montana about 2,750 m.y. ago. The principal bed of iron-formation occurs within a metasedimentary sequence that has dolomite marble at the base and rests on quartzofeldspathic gneiss of uncertain origin. The stratigraphic thickness of the preserved part of the metasedimentary group cannot readily be established because of structural complexities, including both thickening and attenuation, but it probably does not exceed 300 m. The true (original) thickness of the iron-formation is even more difficult to determine because of the structural incompetence of the rock, but it ranges from 15 to 30 m. All the rocks, with the exception of a few younger Precambrian (Proterozoic Y) diabase dikes, are metamorphosed to amphibolite or hornblende granulite facies. The iron-formation typically consists of quartz and magnetite, with subordinate amounts of iron silicates, mainly hypersthene, garnet, clinopyroxene, and grunerite. \r\n\r\nThe principal deposits of iron-formation are in the Copper Mountain area, an area of about 13 km 2 in the west-central part of the Tobacco Root range that has been mapped in some detail. The structure consists of an early set of tight isoclinal folds, trending north-south and overturned to the east, that are deformed by later crossfolds that trend and plunge northwest. The most prominent belt of iron-formation is on a tight anticlinal buckle within the northsouth-trending Ramshorn syncline, a major structure of the first fold set. This belt of iron-formation is estimated to contain about 63 million t of potential low-grade ore (taconite) to a depth of 100 m. The rock contains about 35 weight percent Fe, mostly in the form of magnetite. \r\n\r\nIron-formation occurs in many other localities in the region as distinctive but thin and discontinuous units. This study of the hydrology and geochemistry of the area used ground-water solute-transport-modeling techniques to investigate the possible impact of the mines on water quality. Maps of the extent and structure of the aquifer were prepared and show that a saturated thickness of 2,000 feet occurs in the northeast part of the basin. Ground-water recharge in the upland areas in the east, south, and west parts of the basin moves down into deeper zones in the aquifer and laterally to the discharge areas along Piceance and Yellow Creeks. The saline zone and the unsaturated zone provide the majority of the dissolved solids found in the ground water. Precipitation, ion-exchange, and oxidation-reduction reactions are also occuring in the aquifer. Model simulations of ground-water pumpage in tracts C-a and C-b indicate that the altered direction of ground-water movement near the pumped mines will cause an improvement in ground-water quality near the mines and a degradation of water quality downgradient from the tracts. Model simulations of mine leaching in tract C-a and C-b indicate that equal rates of mine leaching in the tracts will produce much different effects on the water quality in the basin. Tract C-a, by virtue of its remote location from perennial streams, will primarily degrade the ground-water quality over a large area to the northeast of the tract. Tract C-b, by contrast, will primarily degrade the surface-water quality in Piceance Creek, with only localized effects on the ground-water quality. The drainage basin is 17.7 mi<sup>2</sup> at the outlet of Lake Cochituate in Framingham. Principal tributaries to the lake are Beaverdam, Course, Pegan, and Snake Brooks. Beaverdam and Course Brooks flow into Fisk Pond, which empties into Lake Cochituate, whereas Pegan and Snake Brooks flow directly into Lake Cochituate. Surface drainage from the outlet of Lake Cochituate flows along Cochituate Brook into the Sudbury River at Framingham.
