The area is at the southern end of the Sierra Nevada, approximately 30 miles east-northeast of Bakersfield, and 2.5 miles and 3.5 miles south-southeast of the communities of Bodfish and Lake Isabella, respectively (index map). Geochemical sampling was conducted during 1980 and 1981. This report summarizes the results of that investigation and provides details of the geochemical evaluation used in the final mineral resource assessment of the study area (Kennedy and others, 1983).</p>\n<p>Map A shows the locations of all sites sampled for this report and the distributions of anomalous concentrations of 4 elements in 33 samples of rock, 5 elements in 34 samples of minus-60-mesh stream sediment, and 11 elements in 33 samples of nonmagnetic heavy-mineral concentrate derived from stream sediment. These efforts have improved our knowledge of the geologic history, general tectonic setting, and patterns of modern seismicity (see McKeown and Pakiser, 1982) in the New Madrid seismic zone. Identifying and characterizing the specific structures that may be responsible for the seismicity is the focus of continuing research. Unfortunately, these structures are buried by the veneer of poorly consolidated Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments that overlie competent rocks in the embayment. In such a geologic setting, seismic-reflection profiling is one of the most valuable techniques available to obtain useful information on the distribution of faults, and on the local and regional structure.</p>\n<p>Three major seismic-reflection programs have been conducted by the USGS in the New Madrid seismic zone. The first program consisted of 32 km of conventional Vibroseis profiling designed to investigate the subsurface structure associated with scarps and lineaments in northwestern Tennessee (Zoback, 1979). A second, more extensive Vibroseis program collected about 250 km of data from all parts of the New Madrid seismic zone in Missouri, Arkansas, and Tennessee (Hamilton and Zoback, 1979, 1982; Zoback and others, 1980). The profiles presented here are part of the third program that collected about 240 km of high-resolution seismic-reflection data from a boat along the Mississippi River between Osceola, Ark., and Wickliffe, Ky. (fig. 1). The data for profiles A, B, C, and D were collected between river miles 839-1/2 and 850-1/2 from near the Interstate-155 bridge to upstream of Caruthersville, Mo. (fig. 2). Profiles on this part of the river are important for three reasons: (1) they connect many of the land-based profiles on either side of the river, (2) they are near the northeast termination of a linear, 120km-long, northeast-southwest zone of seismicity that extends from northeast Arkansas to Caruthersville, Mo. These trace-element characteristics are typical of A-type granites found in other areas of the world. In spite of the wide range in trace-element contents, no samples contained economically significant concentrations of a single element.</p>\n<p>Samples range from peralkaline to strongly peraluminous; most are weakly peraluminous or metaluminous. All three subgroups (peralkaline, metaluminous, and peraluminous) are enriched in uranium and hafnium and are depleted in compatible elements. The peralkaline granites are generally enriched in yttrium and niobium - the strongly peraluminous granites in rubidium and tantalum; both groups are also somewhat enriched in the heavy-rare-earth elements. Several of the peraluminous granites are known to be tin-bearing and, like tin-bearing granites found elsewhere in the world, their chondrite-normalized, rare-earth-element patterns are flat and have large negative europium anomalies.</p>\n<p>Samples from several plutons have very anomalous ratios for geochemically similar elements such as yttrium and holmium, niobium and tantalum, and zirconium and hafnium. These ratios may reflect differential complexing with a halogen-rich aqueous phase that may be characteristic of plutons that have been subjected to an ore-forming process. The Decree authorizes diversions of water from the Delaware River basin and requires compensating releases from certain reservoirs of the City of New York to be made under the supervision and direction of the River Master. Reports to the Court, not less frequently than annually, were stipulated. During the 1985 report year, December 1, 1984, to November 30, 1985, precipitation and runoff varied from below average to above average in the Delaware River basin. For the year as a whole, precipitation was near average. Runoff was below average. Operations were under a status of drought warning or drought from January 23, 1984, through the end of the report year. Below-normal precipitation the first half of the year resulted in decreased storage in the reservoirs to record low levels by March 1, 1985. Storage remained at record low levels from March through September. Above-normal precipitation in September and November served to break the drought and increase storage into the normal zone of the operating curves for the reservoirs. Diversions from the Delaware River basin by New York City did not exceed those authorized by the terms of the Amended Decree or those invoked by the several emergency conservation measures throughout the year. There were no diversions from the Delaware River basin by New Jersey during the year. Releases were made as directed by the River Master at rates designed to meet the Montague flow objective on 82 days between June 14 and September 28. Releases were made at conservation rates or at rates designed to relieve thermal stress in the streams downstream from the reservoirs at other times. The system is used to measure daily discharge through river control dams. These dams commonly have tainter gates which are raised and lowered to keep the upper pool level relatively constant as the river flow changes. In order to measure the flow through such a structure, the positions of the tainter gates and the headwater and tailwater elevations must be known. From these data, the flow through the structure can be calculated. A typical digital data collection system is shown. Digitizing devices are mounted on the hoisting mechanism of each gate, as well as at the headwater and tailwater gages. Data from these digitizers are then routed by electrical cables to a central console where they are displayed and recorded on paper tape. If the dam has locks, a pressure-sensitive switch located in the lock activates a counter in the console which keeps track of the number of times the lock is drained and filled.
