Opening of the Oakland tidal channel and removal of 97% of the marshlands formerly surrounding the Bay have decreased tidal velocities and volumes. Marshland removal has decreased the tidal prism by about 25%. Comparison of bathymetric surveys indicates that sedimentation in the vicinity of the San Leandro Bay channel averaged 0.7 cm/annum between 1856 and 1984. Lead-210 data collected at four shallow water sites east of the San Leandro Bay channel indicated that sedimentation rates have averaged between 0.06 and 0.28 cm/annum. Because bioturbation of bottom sediments cannot be discounted, better definition of this range in sedimentation rates would required measuring the activity of lead-210 on incoming sediments. In addition to sediment deposited in the vicinity of the San Leandro Bay channel and open, shallow areas to the east, 850,740 cu m of sediment was deposited between 1948 and 1983 in an area dredged at the mouth of San Leandro Creek. All available data indicate that between 1 ,213,000 and 1,364,000 cu m of sediment was deposited in San Leandro Bay between 1948 and 1983. Sediment yield data from an adjacent drainage basin, when combined with inventories of lead-210 and cesium-137, indicate that most of the sediment deposited in San Leandro Bay is coming from resuspension of bottom sediments or from erosion of marshes or shorelines of San Leandro or San Francisco Bay.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wri864057","usgsCitation":"Nolan, K., and Fuller, C.C., 1986, Sediment accumulation in San Leandro Bay, Alameda County, California, during the 20th century -- A preliminary report: U.S. Geological Survey Water-Resources Investigations Report 86-4057, iv, 25 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wri864057.","productDescription":"iv, 25 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":393251,"rank":2,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_36516.htm"},{"id":57777,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4057/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":159144,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wri/1986/4057/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Alameda County","otherGeospatial":"San Leandro Bay","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -122.24899291992188,\n              37.73081027834234\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.20298767089842,\n              37.73081027834234\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.20298767089842,\n              37.77207165460913\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.24899291992188,\n              37.77207165460913\n            ],\n            [\n              -122.24899291992188,\n              37.73081027834234\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a7fe4b07f02db648d75","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Nolan, K.M.","contributorId":36151,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Nolan","given":"K.M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":200596,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Fuller, C. It is used particularly when other methods for managing liquid waste are either not possible or too costly. Interest in subsurface injection as a waste-disposal method stems partly from recognition that surface disposal of liquid waste may establish a potential for degrading freshwater resources. Where hydrogeologic conditions are suitable and where surface disposal may cause contamination, subsurface injection is considered an attractive alternative for waste disposal. Decisions to use subsurface injection need to be made with care because, where hydrogeologic conditions are not suitable for injection, the risk to water resources, particularly ground water, could be great. Selection of subsurface injection as a waste-disposal method requires thoughtful deliberation and, in some instances, extensive data collection and analyses. \r\n\r\nSubsurface injection is a geological method of waste disposal. Therefore, many State and local governmental officials and environmentally concerned citizens who make decisions about waste-disposal alternatives may know little about it. This report serves as an elemental/guide to subsurface injection and presents subsurface injection practices in Florida as an example of how one State is managing injection.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O,","doi":"10.3133/wsp2281","usgsCitation":"Hickey, J.J., and Vecchioli, J., 1986, Subsurface injection of liquid waste with emphasis on injection practices in Florida: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 2281, vi, 25 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp2281.","productDescription":"vi, 25 p. :ill., maps ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137771,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2281/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":27165,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/2281/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b05e4b07f02db699a30","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hickey, John J.","contributorId":39763,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hickey","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"J.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144294,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Vecchioli, John","contributorId":36113,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Vecchioli","given":"John","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144293,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The Winnipeg Formation, which underlies the Red River Formation, consists of two units: A lower shaley mudstone and an upper medium-grained sandstone. The Red River Formation consists of a lower dolomitic, dark-gray limestone and upper, slightly less-dolomitic, limestone. A porous zone at the top of the upper limestone yields most of the water to wells in the Red River-Winnipeg aquifer.
\n
Ground water generally flows eastward through the aquifer from North Dakota and discharges upward to wells and to overlying deposits. Yields of wells open to the full thickness of the aquifer range from 100 t 250 gallons per minute. The water is unsuitable for most uses because of the high mineral content. Dissolved-solids concentrations range from about 3,000 milligrams per liter in the eastern part of the aquifer to about 60,000 milligrams per liter in the northwestern corner of Minnesota.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri844111","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. These sandstone beds are not laterally or vertically persistent throughout the area and generally are separated shale beds in the Dakota Formation and in the overlying Colorado Group of Cretaceous age. Water in the Cretaceous aquifer is confined by overlying shale and by overlying till as much as 700 feet thick. Locally where the drift is permeable and thin and where the shale is missing, water in the aquifer is unconfined. Groundwater moves away from the Sioux Quartzite Ridge north toward the Minnesota River, south toward Iowa, and eastward toward the Mississippi River. Recharge to the aquifer primarily is by infiltration of precipitation that percolates through the overlying drift and underflow in the aquifer from South Dakota.
\n
Water in the Cretaceous aquifer consists of five chemical types based on predominant ions; including calcium-magnesium bicarbonate, calcium-magnesium sulfate, sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and sodium sulfate type waters. Dissolved-solids, chloride, and sulfate concentrations in the aquifer locally exceed standards recommended by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for public supplies, particularly in areas southwest of the Minnesota River.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Reston, VA","doi":"10.3133/wri844153","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation The technique was successful at three of the landfills; results compared closely with those indicated by specific conductance of water from observation wells on the sites. Data from the three sites for which the technique was successful--the Horseblock Road landfill , the Manorville scavenger waste disposal facility, and the Riverhead landfill--revealed pronounced terrain conductivity anomalies that reflect known contaminant plumes. Plumes at the other two sites--Blydenburgh landfill and the East Meadow artificial recharge site--could not be detected because cultural interferences were too great and, at the Blydenburgh site, depth to water was too great. The interferences included pipelines, utility cables, and traffic. Given favorable conditions, such as high plume conductivity, lack of cultural interferences, and a depth of less than 100 ft to the plume, electromagnetic surveying can provide a rapid means of locating contaminant plumes.
