The effects are of concern to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources because the stream is a Class II trout stream.</p>\n<p>Average daily Streamflow, from records collected during the 1980 water year, was about 50 cubic feet per second, and flow ranged from 4.5 to 1,010 cubic feet per second. Average summer (1980) water temperature of the creek was 21.0&deg;C, and the average summer dissolved-oxygen concentration was 7.1 milligrams per liter. Water temperature did not exceed 26.0&deg;C, and dissolved oxygen did not fall below 6.0 milligrams per liter at any time during the summer.</p>\n<p>A computer-simulated average summer temperature below the proposed impoundment was 22.5&deg;C with a surface-level outlet from the reservoir, and 21.9&deg;C with a bottom-draw outlet. Dissolved oxygen exceeded 6.0 milligrams per liter in both cases.</p>\n<p>Nutrient concentrations in Bridge Creek and comparisons with a similar impoundment at nearby Fall Creek indicate that the proposed impoundment would have nuisance weed growth. The impoundment would have a computed transit time of about 3 days, with a surface-level outlet, or 1 day with a bottom-draw outlet, assuming a normal pool elevation and a summer base flow of 7.5 cubic feet per second. Forty-two magnetically acceptable flows (139 samples) yield a mean direction of magnetization of D=-4.7°, 1=15.2° (<span>α</span>95=4.3°), which defines a paleomagnetic pole at 78.8°N, 247.8°E. Of these acceptable flows, 24 are normally magnetized and 18 are reversed. Parts of two sections of flows erupted apparently during the early phases of a polarity reversal of the earth's field. Although the mean paleomagnetic directions determined from each flow do not collectively define a strict Fisherian distribution, the fact that the mean directions for each of the four sections are nearly identical indicates that the overall paleomagnetic pole position is reliable. The magnetostratigraphy can be only generally correlated from one section to another apparently because of a lateral thickening and pinching out of many flows between sections.</p><p>The dispersion of directions due to secular variation of the upper Oligocene and lower Miocene field (standard angular deviation = 16.2°) is about the same as that produced by the recent field. If the rate of secular change during the time of As Sarat eruption was approximately that of the present, the rate of eruption during several sequences of As Sarat flows is estimated to be one flow about every 100 years.</p><p>The fact that the mean direction derived from 24 normally magnetized flows is significantly different from that derived from the 18 reversed flows supports the hypothesis of a displaced dipole source for the earth's field in late Oligocene to early Miocene time.</p><p>The results from As Sarat, as well as those from Aden, compared with paleomagnetic results from Late Tertiary rocks in Africa indicate with 95 percent confidence that the Red Sea has opened at least 2° in the past 5 m.y., and at least 4° in the past 25 m.y. Acceleration data from 183 recordings of 24 earthquakes and velocity data from 62 recordings of 10 earthquakes have been used. This new analysis uses a magnitude-independent shape for the attenuation curve based on geometrical spreading and anelastic attenuation. A magnitude-dependent shape could be accommodated by the method, but the data do not support it. The quality of water in Little Copiah Creek improved 7 miles downstream of a source of wastewater inflow. The mean total nitrogen concentration decreased from 17 to 1.1 milligrams per liter and the mean total phosphorus concentrations decreased from 5.8 to 0.39 milligrams per liter. The maximum five-day biochemical oxygen demand decreased from 14 to 1.4 milligrams per liter while the dissolved-oxygen concentration increased from 2.0 to 6.9 milligrams per liter. The maximum fecal coliform and fecal streptococcus densities at the upstream sampling site were 2,200 and 6,700 colonies per 100 milliliter, respectively, and were observed to decrease downstream to 160 and 1,500 colonies per 100 milliliters. The mean stream temperatures decreased downstream only slightly from 26.5 to 25.0 Celsius and the pH of the water ranged from 7.2 to 7.4 units upstream and 6.5 to 7.0 units at the downstream site. The average rate of dye travel through the upstream 2.3 mile reach was 0.08 miles per hour during the study. The low porosity and permeability of the Franciscan sandstones that underlie these areas indicate a very low potential for oil or gas. The geothermal resource potential of these areas also is low.</p>\n<p>Minor manganese resources occur adjacent to the southeast corner of the King Range Instant Study Area near Queen Peak. The manganese forms small stratabound deposits associated with radiolarian chert and pillow basalt. The known deposits are too small and the manganese too low in concentration for further economic exploitation. Similar manganese mineralization may be within the belt of melange in the southeast corner of the King Range area and within the Chemise Mountain Instant Study Area, but economic deposits are unlikely.<br /> Although there has been historical base- and precious-metal exploration activity north of the King Range in the Mattole River drainage, our geologic and geochemical field data indicate almost no gold potential and low potentials for lead, zinc, copper, and silver. During this investigation, one high-grade vein and several minor veins containing lead, zinc, copper, and silver were discovered at Point Delgada immediately south of the King Range Instant Study Area. The vein mineralization is Miocene and cuts Cretaceous basalt flows, dikes, flow breccia, and younger overlying sedimentary rocks of the King Range. The vein mineralization at Point Delgada could be remobilized from more extensive unexposed stratabound base-metal mineralization at depth. Traces of lead and zinc detected within the King Range Instant Study Area may have similar stratabound or vein origins, but no resource potential is indicated. Minor copper mineralization with associated lead, zinc, and manganese anomalies within the Chemise Mountain Instant Study Area is of low economic potential because of the shearing, isolation, and lenticularity of the basaltic and cherty rocks within the melange<br /> mineralization.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological They accumulate the infiltration from rainfall, store it temporarily, and steadily leak it to abutting basal reservoirs or to streams cutting into them. The dike reservoirs have high hydraulic heads and are mostly isolated from saline water.</p><p>The most important and productive of the dike-impounded reservoirs occur in an area of about 135 square miles in the main fissure zone of the Koolau volcano where the top of the dike-impounded water reaches an altitude of at least 1,000 feet. Water is impounded and stored both above and below sea level. The water stored above sea level in the area of about 135 square miles has been roughly estimated at 560 billion gallons by using a mean water level of 400 feet and a mean specific yield of 0.05. In comparison, the water stored above sea level in reservoirs with a mean water level of 300 feet and mean specific yield of 0.03 underlying a dike-intruded area of about 53 square miles in the Waianae Range has been roughly estimated at 100 billion gallons. Storage below sea level is indeterminable, owing to uncertainties in the ability of the rock to store water resulting from increasing dike density and decreasing porosity.</p><p>Total leakage from storage in the WaLanae Range has not been estimated because underflow is difficult to determine. Much of the surface leakage, about 4 Mgal/d in the upper parts of Waianae, Makaha, and Lualualei Valleys, has been diverted by tunnels. Hence, supplies available, other than surface leakage, cannot be estimated from the discharge end of the hydrologic cycle. Infiltration in the Waianae Range to dike-intruded reservoirs in the upper part of the valleys on the west (leeward) side has been estimated at about 20 Mgal/d, and on the east (windward) side, at about 10 Mgal/d. The available supply has been estimated at about 15 Mgal/d from the infiltration on the leeward side, of which about 4 Mgal/d is now being developed. No estimate has been made for the available supply on the windward side. Dike-intruded reservoirs at shallow depths west (lee side) of the crest are in upper Makaha, Waianae, and Lualualei Valleys. They are at moderate depths in upper Haleanu and in lower Kaukonahua Gulches on the east (windward) side.</p><p>Flow hydraulics in dike tunnels is also
