The river banks and many areas adjacent to the river support thick stands of cottonwood and willow trees. Brush, grass, pasture land, and cultivated fields occupy most of the remaining area. This is the habitat for many types of wildlife that live in the area or stop over in the area during annual migrations. Both sandhill cranes and whooping cranes are part of the annual migration. There is concern that water-management changes, such as surface-water diversions or ground-water withdrawals for irrigation, may alter the hydrologic environment of the wetland areas and be harmful to the wildlife habitat. In order to determine what affect changes in water management might have on ground-water levels in the wetland areas, detailed data were collected from Crane Meadows Wildlife Area, which is on an island in the Platte River near Grand Island, Nebr. Ground-water levels beneath the island respond to changes in river stage, to recharge from snowmelt and precipitation, and to evapotranspiration by riparian vegetation and from areas where the water table is close to the land surface. The data show that ground-water levels respond rapidly to changes in river stage-usually within 24 hours for distances up to 2,500 feet from the edge of the river. Thus changes in river stage due to changes in surface-water diversions will not have a long-term effect on ground-water levels. Changes in ground-water withdrawals will have the double effect of changing ground-water levels due to changes in drawdown and due to changes in river stage caused by the effects of pumping on river flow. These effects will develop slowly and be long lasting.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr811109","usgsCitation":"Hurr, R.T., 1981, Ground-water hydrology of the Mormon Island Crane Meadows wildlife area near Grand Island, Hall County, Nebraska: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-1109, iv, 16 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr811109.","productDescription":"iv, 16 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":398556,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1109/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":142936,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/1109/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nebraska","county":"Hall County","otherGeospatial":"Mormon Island Crane Meadows wildlife area near Grand Island","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -98.37741851806639,\n              40.82160395916235\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.36797714233398,\n              40.82160395916235\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.36797714233398,\n              40.82712467108559\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.37741851806639,\n              40.82712467108559\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.37741851806639,\n              40.82160395916235\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aaae4b07f02db668a6e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hurr, R. The overlying surficial aquifer contains a constant-head water table and is coupled to the Floridan aquifer by a leakage term that represents flow through a confining layer separating the two aquifers. Under the steady-state condition, all storage terms are set to zero. Utilization of the head-controlled flux condition allows head and flow to vary at the model-grid boundaries. Procedures are described to calibrate the model, test its sensitivity to input-parameter errors, and verify its accuracy for predictive purposes. Also included are attachments that describe setting up and running the model. An example model-interrogation run shows anticipated drawdowns that should result from pumping at the newly constructed Cross Bar Ranch and Morris Bridge well fields. Low concentrations of fluoride have an apparent beneficial effect whereas high concentrations may cause dental fluorosis (mottled teeth enamel) in young children. The recommended concentration of fluoride, as established by EPA (1975) in South Carolina ranges from 1.4 to about 2.4 mg/L depending on the daily air temperature (tables 1 and 2). A lower fluoride concentration in drinking water is considered optimum in areas of high air temperature because generally more water is consumed by individuals in these areas. The total fluoride intake in a warm area where the concentration is low, therefore, will be approximately the same as in a cooler area where the concentration is higher. However, it has been established by SCDHEC that the MCL for fluoride in public drinking water in the coastal areas will be 1.6 mg/L (R. Lewis Shaw, written commun., 1976).</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr81140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the South Carolina Department The modification involved replacing the operator-defined criteria for significance of association of parameters and earthquakes with statistical estimates of significance. This was done in order to decrease the probability of random associations and to increase the flexibility of the pattern-recognition technique. The binomial distribution was used to determine the probability that each particular association could have occurred by chance. Bonferroni's inequality was invoked to determine a conservative significance level for each of the binomial tests. However, without being able to quantify the dependence among the associations, it is not possible to statistically evaluate the group of binomial tests as a whole. Preliminary results identify four independent associations characterizing spatially independent earthquake epicenters, or \"dangerous\" points, and seven independent associations characterizing the intervening \"safe\" points. When all points were reclassified using these traits, all epicenters were correctly classified as dangerous. In addition, three \"safe\" points were reclassified as dangerous and appear to be potential sites for future earthquakes. However, it is not possible to determine the degree of dangerousness of the points using this reclassification scheme. Two dangerous zones emerge in the northeast and southwest portions of the study area. Acceleration data from 183 recordings of 24 earthquakes and velocity data from 62 recordings of 10 earthquakes have been used. This new analysis uses a magnitude-independent shape for the attenuation curve based on geometrical spreading and anelastic attenuation. A magnitude-dependent shape could be accommodated by the method, but the data do not support it. An innovation in technique is introduced that decouples the determination of the distance dependence of the data from the magnitude dependence.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr81365","usgsCitation":"Joyner, W.B., Boore, D.M., and Porcella, R.L., 1981, Peak horizontal acceleration and velocity from strong motion records including records from the 1979 Imperial Valley, California, earthquake: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-365, 46 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr81365.","productDescription":"46 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405015,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0365/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":144206,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0365/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","otherGeospatial":"Imperial Valley","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -115.58029174804686,\n              32.713355353177555\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.67391967773436,\n              32.713355353177555\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.67391967773436,\n              33.002905178377304\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.58029174804686,\n              33.002905178377304\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.58029174804686,\n              32.713355353177555\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae1e4b07f02db6889cb","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Joyner, William B.","contributorId":39786,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Joyner","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160189,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Boore, David M. boore@usgs.gov","contributorId":2509,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Boore","given":"David","email":"boore@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[{"id":237,"text":"Earthquake Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":160188,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Porcella, Ronald L.","contributorId":26674,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Porcella","given":"Ronald","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":160190,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

The data were collected during a period of low discharge and high air temperatures. The water in Tibbee Creek and Catalpa Creek was of much better quality than water in Town Creek. Large quantities of nitrogen, phosphorus, and dissolved solids and high densities of fecal coliform were present in Town Creek. The five-day biochemical oxygen demand values averaged 14 mg/L, and the mean total nitrogen concentration was 56 mg/L. The mean concentrations of ammonia, nitrate plus nitrite nitrogen, and organic nitrogen were 1.8 mg/L, 50 mg/L, and 3.7 mg/L, respectively. A total phosphorus load of more than 400 pounds per day, more than 91 percent of the total phosphorus load leaving the study area, was carried by Town Creek into Tibbee Creek. Total phosphorus concentrations averaged 14 mg/L in Town Creek and 0.11 and 0.12 mg/L in Tibbee and Catalpa Creeks respectively. Bacterial densities were higher at site 2 in Town Creek than at sites 1 and 3 in Tibbee and Catalpa Creeks respectively. The median fecal coliform bacterial density was 25,000 col/100 mL (colonies per 100 milliliters) in Town Creek and less than 200 col/100 mL in Tibbee and Catalpa Creeks. Median fecal streptococcal densities were 1,000 col/100 mL in Town Creek, 210 col/100 mL in Tibbee Creek, and 800 col/100 mL in Catalpa Creek. Fecal coliform to fecal streptococcal ratios were greater than 4.0 in Town Creek, indicating wastes of human origin were probably present during the study.
