The occurrence of this lignite has been known for many decades, but not until the energy crisis was it considered an important energy resource. In recent years, several energy companies have conducted extensive exploration programs in western Tennessee, and tremendous reserves of lignite have been found.\r\n\r\nFrom available information, Lauderdale County was selected as one of the counties where strip-mining of lignite will most likely occur. Lignite in this county occurs in the Jackson and Cockfield Formations, undivided, of Tertiary age. The hydrology of the county is known only from regional studies and the collection of some site-specific data. Therefore, in anticipation of the future mining of lignite, a plan is needed for obtaining hydrologic and geologic information to adequately define the hydrologic system before mining begins and to monitor the effects of strip-mining once it is begun.\r\n\r\nFor this planning effort, available hydrologic, geologic, land use, and associated data were located and compiled; a summary description of the surface and shallow subsurface hydrologic system was prepared: the need for additional baseline hydrologic information was outlined; and plans to monitor the effects of strip-mining were proposed. Almost 350,000 people or 40 percent of Idaho's (estimating 1979 population from Rand McNally (1979)) live in the area, which constitutes about 30 percent of Idaho's land area.</p><p>The great majority of this population resides in the major irrigated agricultural areas along the Snake River between American Falls and Ashton and between Bliss and Lake Walcott, which contain the important and growing commercial centers of Rexberg, Idaho Falls, Blackfoot, Pocatello, Burley-Rupert, Twin Falls, and Jerome. These areas encompass almost two-thirds of Idaho's irrigated croplands, and, along with water, are the region's most important resource. Major products include potatoes, sugar beets, alfalfa, small grains, and other crops.</p><p>Along the margins of the Plain and in adjacent basins, smaller areas of irrigated farming and population are present, such as Teton Basin, Mud Lake area, Big and Little Lost River Valleys, Big and Little Wood River Valleys, and Raft River Valley. In several of these basins and in nearby upland areas, dry farming of grains is important. Some of these lands are now being converted to irrigated croplands. Grazing is the dominant economic use of grasslands on the Plain in adjacent basins and uplands. Fourth of July Creek is a glacier-fed stream that occupies a braided channel near the middle of the fan. The presence of glacial flow during the summer and low discharge during the winter make streamflow a poor source of water for municipal and industrial use. Water infiltrates the fan from streams and precipitation and recharges an unconfined alluvial aquifer. Average recharge is 40-50 cubic feet per second, and ground water flows toward the coast where it discharges in springs and a 0.3-mile gaining reach of the creek. Properties and concentrations of all measured chemical constituents of water samples from two wells were less than the maximum amounts recommended for drinking water. Both the aquifer and the overlying unsaturated materials are coarse grained. The coarse-grained materials are poor filters and make the aquifer susceptible to pollution by contaminants disposed of or spilled on the alluvial fan. Avalanches may block the creek and cause flooding by directing streamflow into new or abandoned channels. Of 96 stations with available data, 53 stations or 55 percent were considered to have sufficient data for analysis. The classification of water type was based on the relation of the major ions: calcium, magnesium, sodium, carbonate, bicarbonate, sulfate, and chloride to each other within the range of measured specific conductance. The suitability of the water for use as a public supply was based on the concentration distribution of selected constituents. The constituents selected were those with maximum contaminant levels established by regulation, or constituents for which recommended maximum limits have been established and for which historic data are available. The irrigation-classification method of Wilcox was used to relate sodium, calcium, and magnesium concentrations and the salinity distribution to the use of the water for irrigation. Suggested borehole data-collection methods for these wells include drilling in stages; running geophysical logs at the completion of each stage; collection of water-level and specific-conductance data before, during, and after a day 's drilling; specific-capacity determinations after a day 's drilling; and placing a packer in the gypsiferous and anhydritic limestone and dolomite for water-level and water-quality data. Proper design of hydraulic structures and adequate flood-plain management depend on this information. Multiple-regression techniques were used to develop equations for estimating flood frequencies at ungaged sites.</p>\n<p>The State is divided into five areas and has equations developed for each area. These areas are based on areal factors determined from previous studies and physical basin characteristics. Significant characteristics in the equations are soil permeability, drainage area, slope, storage, forest cover, snowfall, precipitation intensity, and mean annual precipitation. Standard errors of estimate for the regression equations ranged from 23 to 38 percent.</p>\n<p>Annual flood peaks, basin characteristics, and flood-frequency values are presented in this report. Data from 184 gaging stations were used in the regression analysis, of which 20 had rainfall-runoff data collected. Long-term synthetic peaks were generated from the rainfall-runoff data and were weighted with the observed peak data to improve the flood-frequency distributions.</p>\n<p>A method to estimate flood-frequency values for regulated streams was developed by discharge-drainage area relationships. of Kansas","docAbstract":"<p><span>The earthquake data shown on this map and listed in table 1 are a list of earthquakes that were originally used in preparing the Seismic Risk Studies in the United States in the United States (Algermissen, 1969) which have been recompiled and updated through 1977. &nbsp;These data have been reexamined which resulted in some revisions of epicenters and intensities as well as assignment of intensities to earthquakes that previously had none assigned. &nbsp;Intensity values were updated from new and additional data sources that were not available at the time of original compilation. &nbsp;Some epicenters were relocated on the basis of new information. &nbsp;The data shown in table 1 are estimates of the most accurate epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake, on the basis of historical and current information. &nbsp;Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed but are incomplete in many instances, especially for ones that occurred</span><span>&nbsp;before seismic instruments were in universal usage.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
