During the six weeks following the October 15, 1979 earthquake, parts of the Imperial Valley Mekometer network (Fig. 1) around the Imperial fault to the east of El Centro were re-measured, some repeatedly, in an attempt to assess the coseismic and postearthquake slip on the fault, and horizontal strain adjustment around it. This report presents the results, together with the most recent pre-earthquake measurements, for comparison. It includes also a brief discussion of the results.

The Divide Section, the northernmost 39 miles of the Waterway, will consist, from north to south, of (1) a dredged channel, (2) the Divide Cut, and (3) an artifical lake impounded by the Bay Springs Dam. In all three , water will be at Tennessee River level. A three-dimensional digital model covering 3,273 square miles was constructed to simulate ground-water flow in the Gordo and Eutaw Formations and the Coffee Sand in the vicinity of the Divide Section. The model was calibrated to preconstruction water levels, then used to simulate the effects of stresses imposed by the construction of the Divide Section. The model indicates that the system stabilizes after major changes in conditions within a few months. The Divide Cut acts as a drain, lowering water levels as much as 55 feet. Drawdowns of 5 feet occur as much as 8 miles from the Cut. The 80-foot-high Bay Springs Dam raises ground-water levels by 5 feet as far as 6 miles from its impoundment. Drawdown is not likely to affect public water supplies significantly, but probably will adversely affect a relatively small number of private wells. Navigation in the study area was by Loran C. The 368 kilometers of survey were conducted in Block Island Sound, in Rhode Island Sound, and over the mid-Continental Shelf south of Block Island and Martha's Vineyard.
Although the records are generally of good quality, variable ship speeds were caused by changes of wind and sail. Thus, care must be used in dimensional and orientation analysis of the bed-form features observed on the records.
On the midshelf, three bottom types were observed: 1) smooth, featureless sea floor, 2) elongated bodies of megaripples, and 3) ground-fishing trawler marks. The distribution of the .features seems to be related to current velocity, grain-size distribution, water depth, and fishing intensity. The midshelf survey results are discussed with cruise data of R/V CAPE HENLOPEN (also collected in the spring of 1978) \\ by Twichell and others.
The sonographs from Block Island and Rhode Island Sounds show a pattern indicative of a till cap atop a submerged part of the coastal end moraine, as well as the megarippled and smooth sea floor.
