Well MRN 77 (Marion 77) was drilled to a depth of 365 ft and was used as an observation well in the Black Creek aquifer and to supply water during drilling of the deeper well. MRN 78 (Marion 78) was drilled and cored through the entire thickness of Coastal Plain sediments into the underlying basement rock to a depth of 1,225 ft. Data from the wells include description of the core samples from MRN 78, geophysical logs, zone water levels, chemical analysis of the water sampled and results of tests for mineral content. Head in MRN 78 increases with depth. The waters sampled were all sodium bicarbonate type except for the deepest zone (1,120-1,140 ft) sampled in MRN 78, which yielded a sodium chloride type water. Geochemical maps showing the distribution and abundance of 10 other selected key elements and the mineral fluorite in the Silver City quadrangle are also part of this folio (Watts and Hassemer, 1980; Watts and others 1986a-i). These maps contribute to the assessment of mineral resources within Silver City 1o x 2o quadrangle by (1) showing regional patterns of elements enriched in heavy-mineral concentrates, thereby providing clues to regional patterns of mineralization; (2) showing new areas containing enriched metals, not previously known from mining activity; and (3) providing supportive data to the interpretive and summary maps (Watts and Hassmer, 1986) and the mineral resource assessment (Richter and others, 1983). The system is used to measure daily discharge through river control dams. These dams commonly have tainter gates which are raised and lowered to keep the upper pool level relatively constant as the river flow changes. In order to measure the flow through such a structure, the positions of the tainter gates and the headwater and tailwater elevations must be known. From these data, the flow through the structure can be calculated. A typical digital data collection system is shown. Digitizing devices are mounted on the hoisting mechanism of each gate, as well as at the headwater and tailwater gages. Data from these digitizers are then routed by electrical cables to a central console where they are displayed and recorded on paper tape. If the dam has locks, a pressure-sensitive switch located in the lock activates a counter in the console which keeps track of the number of times the lock is drained and filled. Estimated composite error of computed unregulated discharges, based on analyses of several possible sources of error, was 10 percent. Unregulated streamflow at Union Gap and near Parker was shown to be basically equivalent. Regulation reduced unregulated 52-year mean annual discharge from 5,900 cu ft/sec to 3,800 cu ft/sec at Union Gap and 2,300 cu ft/sec near Parker. Losses were due primarily to diversion for agricultural irrigation and to export of water from Upper to Lower Yakima basin. Regulation reduced springtime high flows and increased August-September low flows at Union Gap, but three canals between Union Gap and Parker caused flow in the Yakima River to diminish to very low values. Coefficients of variation and distribution percentiles of mean discharges indicate that the relative variability of regulated means has generally decreased compared with unregulated means at Union Gap and increased compared with unregulated flow near Parker.
