Data were collected routinely at five major stations and periodically at 14 intervening stations. Each major station represents a cross section through which the transport of selected dissolved and suspended materials will be computed. The intervening stations represent locations at which data were collected for special studies such as: salt water migration, dissolved oxygen dynamics, and other synoptic studies. About 960 samples were analyzed for silicate, Kjeldhal nitrogen, nitrite, phosphorus, chlorophyll and suspended sediment, with additional samples analyzed for organic carbon, calcium, magnesium, sodium, bicarbonate, sulfate, potassium, chloride, fluoride, seston and dissolved solids residue. Included in the report are hole history, electrical logs, geology (sample descriptions and cores), hydrologic testing, and geochemistry. These wells were drilled as part of a cooperative investigation between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Kansas Geological Survey, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to determine the regional hydrology of the Arbuckle Group and to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of the formation at site-specific areas.</p>\n<p>The test wells were drilled in Miami (site 1), Douglas (site 2), Saline (site 3), and Labette (site4) Counties, Kansas. Depths of the wells ranged from 1,816 feet in Labette County to 3,665 feet in Saline County. All wells have surface casing installed to depths well below the base of freshwater. The wells were cased from land surface to near the top of the Arbuckle Group; the remainder of the hole was left open so that additional hydrologic tests could be made.</p>\n<p>Cores of rocks in the Arbuckle Group were collected at sites 2, 3, and 4. Results ofcore analyses are presented for vertical and horizontal permeability to air, porosity , fluid saturation, accoustic velocity, resistivity indices, and formation factor. Gamma-ray logs of the core were run for correlation with electrical logs. A series of electrical logs was run at each site, consisting of dual-induction laterolog, sonic, and compensated neutron-formation density logs for correlating geologic and hydrologic data. Flow logs and temperature logs also were run at some sites.</p>\n<p>Formation data from drill-stem tests are presented for use in calculating transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, and hydraulic head. Inevitable delays, subsequent scheduling problems, and the death of Dave Johnston in the May 18 eruption of Mount St. Helens led to this publication as a USGS Circular.\n\nThis circular differs from typical U.S. Geological Survey compilations in that not all these papers have been examined by the Geologic Names Committee of the Survey. This Committee is charged with ensuring consistent usage of formational and other stratigraphic names in U.S. Geological Survey publications. Because many of the contributions are from workers outside the Survey, review by the Geologic Names Committee would have been inappropriate. Each author provided camera-ready pages, and the articles have not been edited for uniformity of style or usage.\n\nThe contributions are generally ordered so as to describe the areas from north to south. EDC reproduces and sells photographic and electronic copies of satellite images of areas throughout the world. Other products include aerial photographs collected by 16 organizations, including the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Primary users of the remotely sensed data are Federal, State, and municipal government agencies, universities, foreign nations, and private industries. The&nbsp;professional services available at EDC are primarily directed at integrating satellite and aircraft remote sensing technology into the programs of the Department of the Interior and its cooperators. This is accomplished through formal training workshops, user assistance, cooperative demonstration projects, and access to equipment and capabilities in an advanced data analysis laboratory. In addition, other Federal agencies, State and local governments, universities, and the general public can get assistance from the EDC Staff. </p><p>Since 1973, EDC has contributed to the accelerating growth in development and operational use of remotely sensed data for land resource problems through its role as educator and by conducting basic and applied&nbsp;remote sensing applications research. As remote sensing technology continues to evolve, EDC will continue to respond to the increasing demand for timely information on remote sensing applications. Questions most often asked about EDC's research and training programs include: Who may attend an EDC remote sensing training course? Specifically, what is taught? Who may cooperate with EDC on remote sensing projects? Are interpretation services provided on a service basis? The leveling array is one of several strain measurement techniques established at the observatory by several investigators for side-byside testing. Precise leveling is an optical method of measuring vertical strain in contrast to the various tiltmeters which measure electronically or electro-optically. The advantages of establishing several strain measuring techniques at one location is to obtain a high degree of redundancy so that the precision of each technique can be better evaluated.</p><p>A secondary and on-going objective of the leveling is the observation of closely-spaced benchmarks to determine factors affecting their stability. The Silurian System has a maximum thickness in this outcrop area of about 190 feet. It is in most places separated from the underlying Ordovician System by a minor erosional unconformity. It is separated from the overlying Devonian System by a major erosional unconformity along which the entire Silurian section has been removed in some areas. The Silurian is divided into five formations, which are, from lowest to highest: (1) Brassfield Dolomite (or Formation), composed of dolomite in the south and both limestone and dolomite in the north; (2) Osgood Formation, shale and minor dolomite; (3) Laurel Dolomite, dolomite; (4) Waldron Shale, shale and minor dolomite; and (5) Louisville Limestone, calcitic dolomite and dolomitic limestone. The Brassfield is of Early Silurian age; the other formations are Middle Silurian. \r\n\r\nThe main outcrop area of the rocks considered in this re- port extends about 85 miles south from the Ohio River and has a maximum width of about 20 miles. The rocks in this belt generally dip westward about 30 feet per mile. Part of this dip was imparted to the rocks prior to the cutting of the overlying unconformity, but most of it came later. Minor tectonic movement along west-northwest and east-northeast trends probably took place during Silurian time. Thickening of the Brassfield and Osgood southward across the westnorthwest-trending Bardstown monocline and thickening of the Brassfield in the axial zone of the east-northeast-trending Lyndon syncline indicate that movement took place along these structures during or immediately before the deposition of these formations. \r\n\r\nSeveral remarkably persistent thin units of dolomite and shale that make up the Osgood, the Laurel, and the Waldron indicate a depositional strike about north. The dolomite was originally mostly fossiliferous limestone deposited in shallow marginal seas. The data include records of approximately 900 wells, test-holes, and springs, results of chemical analyses of water from 30 wells tapping the aquifer, monthly water-level measurements for selected wells, and low-flow discharge measurements of the Beaver-North Canadian River and its tributaries (plate 1). All of the data were collected in the field during the period 1977-79. Interpretation was based on data from the wells, a potentiometric-surface map, and chemical analyses. Four of the five landfills are in abandoned sand and gravel pits. Pumping of water from a quarry near the landfills has modified the local ground-water flow pattern, increased the hydraulic gradient, and lowered the water table. Ground water unaffected by the landfills is a hard, calcium bicarbonate type with concentrations of dissolved iron and dissolved sulfate as great as 3.0 milligrams per liter and 200 milligrams per liter, respectively. Water sampled from wells downgradient from two landfills shows an increase in sodium, chloride, and other constituents. The change in water quality cannot be traced directly to the landfills, however, because of well location and the presence of other potential sources of contamination. Chemical analysis of leachate from a collection unit at one landfill shows significant amounts of zinc, chromium, copper, and nickel, in addition to high total organic carbon, biochemical oxygen demand, and organic nitrogen. Concentrations of chloride, iron, lead, manganese and phenolic compounds exceed Ohio Environmental Protection Agency Water Quality Standards for drinking water. Water from unaffected wells within the study area have relatively small amounts of these constituents. More than 2,100 samples from 84 drill holes representing 11 shale units were analyzed for clay mineralogy or whole—rock mineralogy or both. Approximately 1,300 samples were from drill cores and about 800 samples were from drill cuttings. Illite (2M) recrystallized during diagenesis is more or less uniformly present throughout all shale units. Chlorite formed during low grade metamorphism is least abundant in the younger units and more abundant in the older units. Illite—smectite mixed—layer clay, which supplied the material for the formation of chlorite, is most abundant in the younger units and least abundant in the older units. Illite—chlorite mixed—layer clay occurs as a trace in all shale units. Kaolinite, the only unaltered detrital clay mineral, occurs in about 25 to 30 percent of the samples. The source of the kaolinite appears to have been to the east and northeast of the basin of deposition.
