The water quality in an unnamed tributary to Spencer Creek upstream and downstream from a surface mine and in South Lake adjacent to the mine were monitored during a 5-year study (1975-79) in the 1,210-acre watershed of the tributary. Compared with the background values, pH and concentrations of all major dissolved ions and dissolved, suspended, and streambed metals generally increased in Spencer Creek tributary downstream from the mine. Median dissolved-sodium and sulfate concentrations increased as much as eighteenfold and fourteenfold, respectively , and median dissolved-manganese and suspended aluminum concentrations increased as much as sevenfold and more than twofold. Concentrations of suspended metals decreased more than 50% after installation of sediment ponds by the mine operator. During high streamflow, concentrations of major ions at background and at mined sites on Spencer Creek tributary decreased, but dissolved- and suspended-metal concentrations increased downstream from the mine. South Lake exhibited seasonal stratification and mixing characteristics of other lakes at a similar latitude. However, the bottom 3 feet of the water column demonstrated persistent chemical stratification. Phytoplankton populations of the lake varied seasonally, and the population density patterns resembled those in other lakes at latitudes similar to that of South Lake.

Increment cores were extracted from eastern hemlock, Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr., at three locations in northern Virginia. Measurements of annual growth increments were made and converted to standardized indices of growth. \r\n\r\nA response function was derived for hemlock to determine the growth-climate relationship. Growth was positively correlated with precipitation and negatively correlated with temperature during the May-July growing season. Combined standardized indices of growth were calibrated with the July PDSI. Growth accounted for 20-30 percent of the PDSI variance. Further regressions using factor scores of combined tree growth indices resulted in a small but significant improvement. Greatest improvement was made by using factor scores of growth indices of individual trees, thereby accounting for 64 percent of the July PDSI variance in the regression. \r\n\r\nComparison of the results with a 241-year reconstruction from New York showed good agreement between low-frequency climatic trends. Analysis of the estimated Central Mountain climatic division of Virginia PDSI record indicated that, relative to the long-term record (1746-1975), dry years have occurred in disproportionally larger numbers during the last half of the 19th century and the mid-20th century. This trend appears reversed for the last half of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century. The three water-bearing zones tested, the Magenta and Culebra Dolomite Members of the Rustler Formation and the Rustler Formation-Salado Formation contact, yield water to wells at rates less than 0.9 gallon per minute. Throughout the testing, water-pressure response in the tested zone was monitored by a pressure transducer system. Shut-in and slug tests were conducted to acquire the data from which the following values were derived. Calculated transmissivities for the Magenta, Culebra and the Rustler-Salado contact at wells H-4A, H-4B, and H-4C were 0.06, 0.9, and 0.0006 foot squared per day respectively. Water samples from the Magenta and Culebra had dissolved-solids concentrations of 22,300 and 18,100 milligrams per liter, respectively. The major chemical constituents of ground-water samples from these two zones were sodium, chloride, and sulfate. Water samples from the Rustler-Salado contact had a dissolved-solids concentration of 322,000 milligrams per liter and magnesium, sodium, and chloride were the major constituents. Radium-226, a naturally occurring radioactive element, was present in samples from all three zones. This bulletin is designed to inform interested personnel about training available through the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey during the period October 1981 through September 1982. The information in this bulletin also can assist supervisors and training officers in developing a coordinated, efficient training program for the personnel for whom they are responsible. The objective of the Water Resources Division training program is to provide specialized training in many phases of hydrology and other subjects related to water-resources investigations. The courses featured in this bulletin are on specialized subjects that are not generally available elsewhere, including the latest developments in applications of ground-water, surface-water, and water-quality hydrologic methods in the field and in the laboratory. The training described herein provides: (1) rapid application of new research results to increase the skills of personnel, and (2) provides newly recruited personnel with special training skills and methods required in water-resources investigations. These courses will assist personnel in learning, reviewing, and expanding their knowledge of technical operations involved in various phases of hydrology and related subjects, and also will develop an overall insight into the broad field of water-resources work.

These clay minerals were not present in the pumped ground water, but were blown into the conveyance canal from adjacent soils. Humic substances from the water and suspended sediments were associated with the clay films on the membrane, but no definitive results concerning their role in fouling were achieved. Microbial fouling is believed to be only a minor aspect of membrane fouling. Chemical and physical changes in humic substances were extensively studied at four points in the water-treatment process. Humic substances accounted for the largest component (over 25 percent) of organic constituents. Humic substances in the canal source water were similar to other aquatic humic substances present in natural waters. During the treatment process, these substances are brominated and decolorized. The effect of these halogenated humic substances on membrane fouling is unclear, but their presence in the reverse-osmosis product water and reverse-osmosis reject brine, along with volatile trihalomethanes, has led to environmental concerns. The Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577, September 3, 1964) and related acts require the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines to survey certain areas on Federal lands to determine their mineral resource potential. Results must be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress. This map presents an analysis of the oil and gas resources of the Cheat Mountain Further Planning Area in the Monongahela National Forest, Randolph County, West Virginia. The area was classified as a further planning area during the Second Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) by the U.S. Forest Service, January 1979.

Cheat Mountain Further Planning Area comprises about 7,720 acres in the Monongahela National Forest in east-central West Virginia, southeast of Elkins. The study area lies on a northeast-trending linear ridge bordered on the west by the Right Fork of Tygart River and on the east by Shavers Fork. It averages about 2 mi in length and 1½ mi in width. Altitudes on Cheat Mountain range from about 2,550 to 3,900 ft.

About 20,000-25,000 chemical analyses of sedimentary rocks in the United States have been published. This report brings together 2,312 of these analyses from California and Hawaii. \r\n\r\nThe samples are arranged by general lithologic characteristics and locality. Indexes of stratigraphy, rock name, commercial uses, and minor elements are provided. \r\n\r\nThe sedimentary rocks are classified into groups and into categories according to the chemical analyses. The groups (A through F2) are defined by a system similar to that proposed by Brian Mason in 1952, in which the main parameters are the three major components of sedimentary rocks: (1) uncombined silica, (2) clay (R203 ? 3Si02 ? nH20), and (3) calcium-magnesium carbonate. The categories are based on the degree of admixture of these three major components with other components, such as sulfate, phos- phate, and iron oxide. Common-rock, mixed-rock, and special-rock categories apply to rocks consisting of 85 percent or more, 50-84 percent, and less than 49 percent, respectively, of the three major components combined. \r\n\r\nMaps show distribution of sample localities by States; triangular diagrams show the lithologic characteristics and classification groups. Cumulative-frequency curves of each constituent in each classification group of the common-rock and mixed-rock categories are also included. \r\n\r\nThe numerous analyses may not adequately represent the geochemical nature of the rock types and formations of the region because of sampling bias. Daily streamflow during 1942-77 was modeled for the following reaches: Susquehanna River--Unadilla to Conklin, Conklin to Vestal, and Vestal to Waverly; Chenango River--Sherburne to Greene, and Greene to Chenango Forks; Tioughnioga River--Cortland to Itaska. The models were developed with convolution techniques and were based on the unit-response method of flow routing, assuming the diffusion analogy and using multilinearization. Overall accuracy of the models, as measured by the average difference between observed and simulated daily flows over the base period, was within the stated accuracy of published gaging-station records. As an example of one application of the models, hypothetical releases from East Sidney Lake and Whitney Point Lake during low flow were traced downstream to the Waverly gaging station at the lower end of the area studied. The leading edge of the East Sidney release arrived in 4 days, and the full release arrived in 6 days. The leading edge of the Whitney Point release arrived in 1 day, and the full release arrived in 3 days.
