Model analysis indicates that only the area within a radius of about 2 miles of the dam on the present Sheyenne River would be affected by rising water levels as a result of a lake stage at 995 feet. The rise of water levels depends on time and hydraulic properties of the aquifer. The maximum projected rise in water levels at the various stages should occur in about 50 to 100 years. Evapotranspiration and existing drains will be effective in limiting the extent of water-level rise. The U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with Mississippi Bureau of Geology is conducting a hydrologic data-collection program in the potential lignite-producing areas in Mississippi. During the week of August 25-28, 1980, hydrologic data on channel characteristics were collected at 15 sites on small streams draining potential lignite mining areas in east-central Mississippi. Streamflow measurements were made and water-quality samples were collected at 11 of the 15 sites.

Main channel widths at the 15 sampling sites in east-central Mississippi ranged from 126 feet on Sucarnoochee Creek to 15 feet on Houston Creek. Maximum water depth ranged from 7 feet on Pawticfaw Creek and Tallahatta Creek to one-half foot on Okatibbee Creek. The maximum stream discharge measured was 56 cubic feet per second on Pawticfaw Creek. Four sites had no discharge. Specific conductance at sampling sites ranged from 115 micromhos on Ponta Creek to 26 micromhos on Sucarnoochee Creek. The dissolved-oxygen concentration was 5.7 milligrams per liter or higher at all sites. The concentration of suspended sediment was not greater than 38 milligrams per liter at any site. Concentrations of calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfate were less than 10 milligrams per liter in all samples, but were highest at site 10 on Ponta Creek. Bottom-material samples commonly contained iron, manganese, and zinc.

An expedient and economical method of air lifting water samples from isolated water-producing zones while drilling was utilized. Lithologic logs of drill cuttings and geophysical logs, including point resistance and spontaneous potential electric logs, gamma-ray logs, and caliper logs, were made. Chemical quality of water was determined for principal producing zones at each well. Dissolved solids from composite water samples ranged from 313 milligrams per liter in test well 0-1 north of the well field to 728 milligrams per liter in test well 0-3 within the well field. Each test well was pumped to determine maximum discharge, water-level drawdown, and recovery time. A leaking pump column on test well 0-1 prevented accurate measurement of drawdown on the well. Test well 0-2, located east of the well field, had a pumping rate of 376 gallons per minute and 13.11 feet of drawdown after 3 hours and 50 minutes; test well 0-3 had a maximum yield of 320 gallons per minute, a drawdown of 31.91 feet after 2 hours and 35 minutes of pumping, had a recovery time of 20 minutes; and test well 0-4, south of the well field, had a pumping rate of 200 gallons per minute with 63.34 feet of drawdown after 2 hours and 35 minutes. Water-quality data collected between January 1979 and August 1980 at the landfill leachate treatment site in Pinellas County, Fla., are presented. Data include field and laboratory measurements of physical properties, major chemical constituents , nitrogen and phosphorus species, chemical oxygen demand, trace metals, coliform bacteria, taxonomy of macroinvertebrates and phytoplankton, and chlorophyll analyses. Data were collected as part of a study to determine water-quality changes resulting from aeration and ponding of leachate pumped from landfill burial trenches and for use in determining the rate of movement and quality changes as the leachate migrates through the surficial aquifer. Samples were collected from 81 surficial-aquifer water-quality monitoring wells constructed in January 1975, February 1979, and March 1979, and 8 surface-water quality monitoring sites established in January 1975, February 1978, and November 1978.

A 6-year quality of water and time-of-travel study was conducted during the construction phase of a flood-water protection and flood prevention project in a 118 square mile area of Tillatoba Creek basin in northwest Mississippi. Weekly suspended sediment, daily discharge, time of travel, nutrient, biochemical oxygen demand, bacteria and field data were collected. The study was conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Soil Conservation Service. The results of the study are presented in graphs and tables in this report without interpretation.

A short-term quality-of-water study of James Creek near Aberdeen, Mississippi was conducted on November 14-16, 1978, during a period of low streamflow. During the study, the water in the 2.6-mile stream reach was undesirable for many uses. Wastewater inflow immediately upstream of the study area contributed to the dissolved-solids load in James Creek. The specific conductance of the water ranged from 775 to 890 micromhos at the head of the study reach and from 650 to 750 micromhos at the end of the study reach.

A substantial biochemical oxygen-demand was evident in James Creek. Five-day biochemical oxygen demand values downstream of a sewage disposal pond outfall ranged from 8.3 to 11 milligrams per liter and dissolved-oxygen concentrations ranged from 0.4 to 4.5 milligrams per liter. Nitrogen and phosphorus compounds and fecal bacteria densities were highest downstream. Total ammonia nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations in the water leaving the study area ranged from 0.29 to 1.4 milligrams per liter and from 0.65 to 1.7 milligrams per liter, respectively. Fecal coliform densities exceeding 50,000 colonies per 100 milliliters of sample were observed in the study area. The median fecal coliform density of the water leaving the study area was 2,800 colonies per 100 milliliters.
