K‐Ar age determinations show that postcaldera volcanic eruptions began 0.73 m.y. ago and continued periodically until about 50,000 years ago. The eruptions were not temporally random but tended to occur in distinct episodes separated by periods of quiescence. Volcanism in the western half of the caldera was particularly intense between 0.15 and 0.50 m.y. ago, when many units ranging in composition from basalt to rhyolite were erupted. An average of the virtual geomagnetic poles for 33 units from the caldera yields a paleomagnetic pole at 89.7°N, 138.4°E, (α</span><sub>95</sub><span><span>&nbsp;</span>= 5.1°), which is indistinguishable from the earth's rotational axis. Barge passages caused significant changes in the distribution of eggs and larvae in the study area. The mean catch of ichthyoplankton was reduced in both surface and bottom waters for 90 min after passage of vessels (generally loaded barges) downstream. The effects of upstream traffic (unloaded barges) on catch ranged from nil in surface or bottom samples to short‐term increases in surface samples immediately after passage. No consistent effect on the catch of age‐0 or small adult fishes in surface or bottom trawls was evident. Physical damage to eggs, but not to larvae or small fish, was significant.</span></span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Fisheries Society","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1986)115<162:EOBTOD>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Holland, L.E., 1986, Effects of barge traffic on distribution and survival of ichthyoplankton and small fishes in the upper Mississippi River: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 115, no. 1, p. 162-165, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1986)115<162:EOBTOD>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"162","endPage":"165","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":129781,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"upper Mississippi River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -93.37801310061406,\n              45.06033881895186\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.64999389912731,\n              43.70137951750419\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.2890153531367,\n              42.851312836530326\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.50758608272973,\n              41.85324820730975\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.20135488829325,\n              41.53781913443471\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.77522401745284,\n              40.34745282987291\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.71199006050338,\n              36.65511753571751\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.74797516915123,\n              36.632060619570055\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.93627853112426,\n              40.417369703828115\n            ],\n            [\n              -89.94786651264764,\n              42.387348854679026\n            ],\n            [\n              -90.74828894057998,\n              42.900480433629426\n            ],\n            [\n              -91.1902287919148,\n              43.91279772937314\n            ],\n            [\n              -92.7846951224142,\n              45.37342784127489\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.37801310061406,\n              45.06033881895186\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"115","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ae4b07f02db6248e0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Holland, L. The model computes water-surface elevations and depth-averaged velocities by numerically integrating finite-difference forms of the equations of mass and momentum conservation using the alternating direction implicit method. The fundamental, non-linear, unsteady-flow equations, upon which the model is formulated, include additional terms to account for Coriolis acceleration and meteorological influences. Preliminary model/prototype data comparisons show agreement to within 9% for tidal flow volumes and phase differences within the measured-data-recording interval. Use of the model to investigate the hydrodynamics and certain aspects of transport within this Potomac Estuary reach is demonstrated. The augen gneiss of Priest River yields an upper-intercept concordia age for only moderately discordant zircons of 1576 ± 13 Ma; there is no evidence of an inherited xenocrystic lead component. Because this unit probably is in basement beneath Belt–Purcell strata, it provides a maximum age for Belt and Purcell sedimentation. However, high-grade metamorphism and structural complexity permit several tectonic interpretations, all of which should be treated with caution pending further detailed studies.Zircons from the augen gneiss of Red River contain inherited radiogenic lead, but by analogy with lithologically and isotopically similar augen gneiss and porphyritic granite near Salmon and Shoup, Idaho, an age of about 1370 Ma is suggested. However, the uncertainty associated with this value is unknown and could be large. Intrusion preceded or was synkinematic with at least part of the deformation and metamorphism that affected the metasedimentary host rocks, thought by some to be Belt–Purcell strata.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Canadian Science Publishing","doi":"10.1139/e86-179","issn":"00084077","usgsCitation":"Evans, K.V., and Fischer, L.B., 1986, U-Pb geochronology of two augen gneiss terranes, Idaho: New data and tectonic implications: Canadian Journal of Earth Sciences, v. 23, no. 12, p. 1919-1927, https://doi.org/10.1139/e86-179.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"1919","endPage":"1927","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":224021,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"Priest River, Red River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.68297100653452,\n              45.477378892433194\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.68297100653452,\n              45.95447225842082\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.62252115882157,\n              45.95447225842082\n            ],\n            [\n              -115.62252115882157,\n              45.477378892433194\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.68297100653452,\n              45.477378892433194\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    },\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -117.05319288336737,\n              47.99391870918288\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.45529733191213,\n              47.99391870918288\n            ],\n            [\n              -116.45529733191213,\n              48.29313446534087\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.05319288336737,\n              48.29313446534087\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.05319288336737,\n              47.99391870918288\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"23","issue":"12","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505bb9cae4b08c986b327ded","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Evans, K. This influence is manifested somewhat differently depending on the relative position of aquitards within a system. In the deeper regimes, they are influential in the origin and distribution of brines and the development of geopressured zones. In intermediate regimes, they form multi-layered aquifer systems and provide a source of reactive minerals and exchangeable ions. In shallow regimes, aquitards can influence the topography and drainage patterns; this influences the relationship between the water table and the potentiometric surface of confined aquifers, controls the rates of infiltration and discharge, and controls whether the geochemical system is open or closed to exchange of carbon dioxide gas. In coastal areas, aquitards can determine the depth of the saltwater-freshwater interface, its distance from the shoreline, and the position of the mixing zone that causes geochemical alteration of minerals and development of porosity. ?? 1986.","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0883-2927(86)90027-2","issn":"08832927","usgsCitation":"Back, W., 1986, Role of aquitards in hydrogeochemical systems: A synopsis: Applied Geochemistry, v. 1, no. 3, p. 427-437, https://doi.org/10.1016/0883-2927(86)90027-2.","productDescription":"11 p. A quantitative estimate of undiscovered mineral resources is made by linking the techniques of subjective estimation, geologic mineral deposit models, and Monte Carlo simulation. The study, which uses grade-tonnage and occurrence models for 21 geologic deposit types, considers 91 U.S. Forest Service wilderness tracts in California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Estimates of the amounts of the 11 metals contained in undiscovered mineral deposits of the types studied range from negligible to several years of U.S. consumption. Although these estimates are limited to metals contained in undiscovered deposits of a small number of metallic mineral deposit types, the assessment procedure can be expanded by the use of additional deposit models and by using information about identified mineral resources. This will allow models of economic processes such as exploration, development, and production to be applied.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.81.1.80","issn":"03610128","usgsCitation":"Drew, L., Bliss, J.D., Bowen, R.W., Bridges, N., Cox, D.P., DeYoung, J.H., Houghton, J., Ludington, S.D., Menzie, W., Page, N., Root, D.H., and Singer, D.A., 1986, Quantitative estimation of undiscovered mineral resources: A case study of US Forest Service Wilderness tracts in the Pacific Mountain system: Economic Geology, v. 81, no. 1, p. 80-88, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.81.1.80.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"80","endPage":"88","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":224190,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"81","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1986-02-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a9216e4b0c8380cd8064f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Drew, L.J.","contributorId":69157,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Drew","given":"L.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370261,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bliss, J. This form allows for the advantageous use of Green's functions to solve for the random output (hydraulic heads) in terms of a convolution over the random input (the logarithm of hydraulic conductivity). A solution for steady state three- dimensional flow in an aquifer bounded above and below is presented; consideration of these boundaries is made possible by use of Green's functions to solve Poisson's equation. Within the bounded domain the medium hydraulic conductivity is assumed to be a second-order stationary random process as represented by a simple three-dimensional covariance function. Upper and lower boundaries are taken to be no-flow boundaries; the mean flow vector lies entirely in the horizontal dimensions. The resulting hydraulic head covariance function exhibits nonstationary effects resulting from the imposition of boundary conditions. For both approaches the field of the logarithm of hydraulic conductivity (log-conductivity) is represented as a random field with mean θ</span><sub>1</sub><span>+θ</span><sub>2</sub><i>x</i><span>+θ</span><sub>3</sub><i>y</i><span><span>&nbsp;</span>where<span>&nbsp;</span></span><i>x</i><span>and<span>&nbsp;</span></span><i>y</i><span><span>&nbsp;</span>denote Cartesian coordinates, variance σ</span><sup>2</sup><span>, and covariance σ</span><sup>2</sup><span>, exp (−α</span><i>R</i><span>), σ</span><sup>2</sup><span>, exp (−α</span><i>R</i><sup>2</sup><span>), or, σ</span><sup>2</sup><span>Δ</span><i>R<sup>r</sup></i><span><span>&nbsp;</span>where α, Δ, and<span>&nbsp;</span></span><i>r</i><span><span>&nbsp;</span>are constants and<span>&nbsp;</span></span><i>R</i><span><span>&nbsp;</span>is separation distance. The first approach uses linearization of the discretized flow equations to allow the construction of the joint covariance matrix of the hydraulic head and log-conductivity measurements as functions of the parameters θ, θ</span><sub>2</sub><span>, θ</span><sub>3</sub><span>, σ</span><sup>2</sup><span>, and α or Δ. It then uses maximum likelihood estimation to obtain these parameters and also a parameter associated with log-conductivity measurement error. Having found values for the parameters, it then uses kriging to form predictors for log-conductivity and hydraulic head from measured values of hydraulic conductivity and hydraulic head. The second approach uses kriging to form a parameter-dependent predictor for log-conductivity from measured hydraulic conductivity, and then uses this predicted log-conductivity placed into the discretized flow equations to compute hydraulic head. The parameters are determined by the minimization of the sum of the squares of the difference between the measured and computed hydraulic heads. A third approach simply allows the hydraulic conductivity field to be a step function with a different value for hydraulic conductivity assigned to each of several chosen regions in the two-dimensional aquifer. The assigned hydraulic conductivities are determined by the minimization of the sum of the squares of the difference between the measured and computed hydraulic heads. The three approaches are tested for hydraulic head prediction accuracy on two generated test problems, one of which is statistically generated, and also on a field problem. The third approach, despite its simplicity, performs as well or better than the other approaches.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR022i005p00705","usgsCitation":"Kuiper, L.K., 1986, A comparison of several methods for the solution of the inverse problem in two-dimensional steady state groundwater flow modeling: Water Resources Research, v. 22, no. 5, p. 705-714, https://doi.org/10.1029/WR022i005p00705.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"705","endPage":"714","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":223853,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"22","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-09","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f2dbe4b0c8380cd4b42c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kuiper, Logan K.","contributorId":75281,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kuiper","given":"Logan","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370041,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Birds were counted along shrubby and shrubless transects during the 1982 breeding season. Species richness and total density of birds were greater on shrubby transects. Five species were more abundant on shrubby transects. Availability of woody nesting substrates best explained differences in bird species abundances. Differences in shrub coverages between transects were probably the result of different land-use practices. Land management practices which modify shrub coverages can alter the composition of passerine bird communities.","language":"English","publisher":"Ottawa Field-Naturalists'
