Discrete radon samples are being collected weekly from nine stations in the Southern Iceland Seismic Zone (SISZ) and two stations in the Northern Iceland-Tjornes Fracture Zone (TFZ) to determine the potential for earthquake prediction. We also monitor volume ratio of gas to water, wellhead temperature and chloride content of the water to enable us to constrain the possible mechanism involved in radon anomalies.</p><p>We report a possible strain event in April that caused both changes in radon emission and a small earthquake swarm. An eruption at Hekla in August was not preceded by any distinctive radon anomalies. Swarm activity occurring close to Selfoss and Oxnalaekur appeared to be associated with possible low amplitude (&lt;30%) precursory radon anomalies in April and October.</p><p>We present the first data from our ALOKA-continuous radon meter at Fludir. The data show no anomalies and no earthquakes have been reported.</p><p>Chloride and radon data from Bakki and Dalvik indicate that an inverse correlation exist between them at longer periods. Therefore, we feel that in the case of a large earthquake the chloride data could tell us something about the mechanism of radon anomalies.</p><p>During 1980 three major eruptions and two subsurface migration events occurred at Krafla, north Iceland. Runoff effects include the addition of phosphate, organic nitrogen, fecal bacteria, trace metals, pesticides and notably suspended sediment to streaMflow, because runoff commonly is a transport mechanism for these constituents. Low-flow water quality generally is characterized by dissolvedoxygen concentrations near saturation, dissolved-solids concentrations of about 450 milligrams per liter, suspendedsediment concentrations less than 200 milligrams per liter, and a pH of 8.2. However~ samples collected during runoff contained biological and chemical concentrations 10 to 30 times greater than concentrations obtained from samples collected during periods of low flow. Suspended-sediment concentrations obtained during runoff ranged froM 1,000 to 7,000 milligrams per liter. Iowa Class \"B\" standards for dissolved oxygen, ammonia, fecal coliforms, chromium, copper, lead, and mercury in streams were exceeded in numerous samples collected during runoff.</p>\n<p>It is probable that the variations between constituent concentrations in samples collected during runoff and those collected during low flow will be similar after grade-stabilization structures have been constructed on streams and after land-treatment measures have been implemented in the watershed as proposed by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service. Grade-stabilization structures should reduce gully and channel erosion in the watershed by dissipating the erosive energy of streamflow during significant runoff. Land-treatment measures to be implemented in conjunction with the project would help reduce sediment yield to stream channels. With the impoundments~ a decrease in velocity of the in-flowing water should produce a decrease of both the suspended~sediment concentrations and the chemical and biological constituents associated Surface-water data for small specific-sites and for larger areas such as adjacent and general areas are needed also to satisfy the hydrologic requirements of the Act. The Act specifies that surface-water modeling techniques may be used to generate the data and information. The purpose of this report is to describe how this can be achieved for smaller watersheds. This report also characterizes 12 ' state-of-the-art ' strip-mining assessment models that are to be tested with data from two data-intensive studies involving small watersheds in Tennessee and Indiana. Watershed models are best applied to small watersheds with specific-site data. Extending the use of modeling techniques to larger watersheds remains relatively untested, and to date the upper limits for application have not been established. The U.S. Geological Survey is currently collecting regional hydrologic data in the major coal provinces of the United States and this data will be used to help satisfy the ' general-area ' data requirements of the Act. Rocks comprising the aquifer were deposited in a near-shore environment ranging from marine on the west to nonmarine to the east. Because of changes in depositional environments with time and from place to place, the aquifer is a complex sequence of fine to very fine grained sandstone, siltstone, shale, and conglomerate, with interbedded very thin limestone. Aggregate thicknesses of water-bearing sandstones are greatest south of the Cimarron River where they reach a maximum of 550 feet in the vicinity of Seminole. Fluoride and selenium were the only chemical constituents found to exceed the National Interim Primary Drinking Water Regulations in water from some of the wells.</p><p>Unusually large silica concentrations in many of the water samples probably were due to the presence of amorphous silica in relatively young volcanic-ash deposits present in the aquifer. This report summarizes hydrologic studies conducted in and near the major coal fields of Utah (fig. 1) by the U.S. Geological Survey through 1980. It is intended as a reference for those people dealing with coal-related hydrologic problems.</p><p>Published reports and reports in preparation at the time of this compilation are summarized in an annotated bibliography. The 4? reports in the annotated bibliography deal with many components of the hydrologic system. Most of the reports are interpretive in nature, but some contain only hydrologic data. The reports deal with such varied subjects as the magnitude and frequency of floods, availability of ground water, and hydrologic impacts of coal mining.</p><p>Seven hydrologic studies that are active in 1980 in Utah coal-resource areas are described. In addition to these seven, studies, that part of the Geological Survey statewide data-collection network in the vicinity of the major coal fields is described.</p><p>The hydrologic studies are conducted and reports prepared, for the most part, by personnel of the Water Resources Division, Utah District. tost of the studies and data-collection programs are in cooperation with other Federal, State, and local agencies.
