The primary investigative method was a subtidal belt transect, in which visual observation was used. The species composition of fish assemblages in the two canopy types was similar. Densities of fish were generally greater in Macrocystis than in Nereocystis forests. The major difference was the density of midwater species of the genus Sebastes. The blue rockfish, Sebastes mystinus, was the numerically dominant species in both canopy types. Estimates of the biomass of fish were about 2.4 times greater in Macrocystis beds than in Nereocystis beds.
","language":"English","publisher":"NOAA National Marine Fisheries Service","usgsCitation":"Bodkin, J.L., 1986, Fish assemblages in Macrocystis and Nereocystis kelp forests off Central California: Fishery Bulletin, v. 84, no. 4, p. 799-808.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"799","endPage":"808","costCenters":[{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":336081,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":336078,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://fishbull.noaa.gov/844/844toc.htm","text":"Fishery Bulletin: Volume 84, Issue 4"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -121.47857666015625,\n              35.56574628576276\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.10092163085936,\n              35.56574628576276\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.10092163085936,\n              35.80444911191491\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.47857666015625,\n              35.80444911191491\n            ],\n            [\n              -121.47857666015625,\n              35.56574628576276\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"84","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58b002dbe4b01ccd54fb2819","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bodkin, James L. 0000-0003-1641-4438 jbodkin@usgs.gov","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1641-4438","contributorId":748,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bodkin","given":"James","email":"jbodkin@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[{"id":116,"text":"Alaska Science Center Biology MFEB","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":114,"text":"Alaska Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":671234,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A mathematical model accounting for the coupled transport of energy, water (vapor and liquid), and dry air was used to analyze one-dimensional, vertical transport above and below an areally extensive repository. Numerical simulations were conducted for a hypothetical repository containing spent nuclear fuel and located 100 m below land surface. Initial steady state downward water fluxes of zero (hydrostatic) and 0.0003 m yr−1were considered in an attempt to bracket the likely range in natural water flux. Predicted temperatures within the repository peaked after approximately 50 years and declined slowly thereafter in response to the decreasing intensity of the radioactive heat source. The alluvium near the repository experienced a cycle of drying and rewetting in both cases. The extent of the dry zone was strongly controlled by the mobility of liquid water near the repository under natural conditions. In the case of initial hydrostatic conditions, the dry zone extended approximately 10 m above and 15 m below the repository. For the case of a natural flux of 0.0003 m yr−1 the relative permeability of water near the repository was initially more than 30 times the value under hydrostatic conditions, consequently the dry zone extended only about 2 m above and 5 m below the repository. In both cases a significant perturbation in liquid saturation levels persisted for several hundred years. This analysis illustrates the extreme sensitivity of model predictions to initial conditions and parameters, such as relative permeability and moisture characteristic curves, that are often poorly known.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Geophysical Union","doi":"10.1029/WR022i005p00765","usgsCitation":"Pollock, D.W., 1986, Simulation of fluid flow and energy transport processes associated with high-level radioactive waste disposal in unsaturated alluvium: Water Resources Research, v. 22, no. 5, p. 765-775, https://doi.org/10.1029/WR022i005p00765.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"765","endPage":"775","costCenters":[{"id":589,"text":"Toxic Substances Hydrology Program","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":223856,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"22","issue":"5","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2010-07-09","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505aaf58e4b0c8380cd8753a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Pollock, David W. dwpolloc@usgs.gov","contributorId":4248,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Pollock","given":"David","email":"dwpolloc@usgs.gov","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[{"id":493,"text":"Office of Ground Water","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":true,"id":370049,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

A quantitative estimate of undiscovered mineral resources is made by linking the techniques of subjective estimation, geologic mineral deposit models, and Monte Carlo simulation. The study, which uses grade-tonnage and occurrence models for 21 geologic deposit types, considers 91 U.S. Forest Service wilderness tracts in California, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington. Estimates of the amounts of the 11 metals contained in undiscovered mineral deposits of the types studied range from negligible to several years of U.S. consumption. Although these estimates are limited to metals contained in undiscovered deposits of a small number of metallic mineral deposit types, the assessment procedure can be expanded by the use of additional deposit models and by using information about identified mineral resources. This will allow models of economic processes such as exploration, development, and production to be applied.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.81.1.80","issn":"03610128","usgsCitation":"Drew, L., Bliss, J.D., Bowen, R.W., Bridges, N., Cox, D.P., DeYoung, J.H., Houghton, J., Ludington, S.D., Menzie, W., Page, N., Root, D.H., and Singer, D.A., 1986, Quantitative estimation of undiscovered mineral resources: A case study of US Forest Service Wilderness tracts in the Pacific Mountain system: Economic Geology, v. 81, no. 1, p. 80-88, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.81.1.80.","productDescription":"9 p.","startPage":"80","endPage":"88","numberOfPages":"9","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":224190,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"81","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1986-02-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a9216e4b0c8380cd8064f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Drew, L.J.","contributorId":69157,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Drew","given":"L.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":370261,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Bliss, J. The mean catch of ichthyoplankton was reduced in both surface and bottom waters for 90 min after passage of vessels (generally loaded barges) downstream. The effects of upstream traffic (unloaded barges) on catch ranged from nil in surface or bottom samples to short‐term increases in surface samples immediately after passage. No consistent effect on the catch of age‐0 or small adult fishes in surface or bottom trawls was evident. Interpretation of SIR-A images by McCauley et al. [1], [2] dramatically changed previous concepts of the role that fluvial processes have played over the past 10000 to 30000000 years in shaping this now extremely flat, featureless, and hyperarid landscape. In the present paper we summarize the near-surface stratigraphy, the electrical properties of materials, and the types of radar interfaces found to be responsible for different classes of SIR-A tonal response. The dominant factors related to efficient microwave signal penetration into the sediment blanket include a) favorable distribution of particle sizes, b) extremely low moisture content and c) reduced geometric scattering at the SIR-A frequency (1.3 GHz). The depth of signal penetration that results in a recorded backscatter, here called \"radar imaging depth,\" was documented in the field to be a maximum of 1.5 m, or 0.25 of the calculated \"skin depth,\" for the sediment blanket. Radar imaging depth is estimated to be between 2 and 3 m for active sand dune materials. Diverse permittivity interfaces and volume scatterers within the shallow subsurface are responsible for most of the observed backscatter not directly attributable to grazing outcrops.
","language":"English","publisher":"IEEE","doi":"10.1109/TGRS.1986.289677","issn":"01962892","usgsCitation":"Schaber, G.G., McCauley, J., Breed, C.S., and Olhoeft, G.R., 1986, Shuttle imaging radar: Physical controls on signal penetration and subsurface scattenng in the Eastern Sahara: IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, v. This influence is manifested somewhat differently depending on the relative position of aquitards within a system. In the deeper regimes, they are influential in the origin and distribution of brines and the development of geopressured zones. In intermediate regimes, they form multi-layered aquifer systems and provide a source of reactive minerals and exchangeable ions. In shallow regimes, aquitards can influence the topography and drainage patterns; this influences the relationship between the water table and the potentiometric surface of confined aquifers, controls the rates of infiltration and discharge, and controls whether the geochemical system is open or closed to exchange of carbon dioxide gas. In coastal areas, aquitards can determine the depth of the saltwater-freshwater interface, its distance from the shoreline, and the position of the mixing zone that causes geochemical alteration of minerals and development of porosity. ?? 1986.","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0883-2927(86)90027-2","issn":"08832927","usgsCitation":"Back, W., 1986, Role of aquitards in hydrogeochemical systems: A synopsis: Applied Geochemistry, v. 1, no. 3, p. 427-437, https://doi.org/10.1016/0883-2927(86)90027-2.","productDescription":"11 p. The model computes water-surface elevations and depth-averaged velocities by numerically integrating finite-difference forms of the equations of mass and momentum conservation using the alternating direction implicit method. The fundamental, non-linear, unsteady-flow equations, upon which the model is formulated, include additional terms to account for Coriolis acceleration and meteorological influences. In each species, survivors of epizootics had developed similar levels of protective antibodies in their sera as demonstrated by microtiter agglutination and passive immunization experiments. We concluded that serum antibodies were not related to graded differences in resistance to furunculosis. These same fishes, however, produced a mucus precipitin that reacted with cell‐free bacterial extracts in single‐radial immunodiffusion assays. The mucus precipitin activity correlated with the resistance of the three species to furunculosis. Breeding studies with brown trout also showed that fish selected for a high level of mucus precipitin activity against Aeromonas salmonicida, the cause of fish furunculosis, produced progeny that were more resistant to furunculosis than other progeny produced from random matings. The nonspecificity of the mucus precipitin reaction was also confirmed by reactions with cell‐free extracts from Vibrio anguillarum and Aeromonas hydrophila.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Fisheries Society","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1986)115<83:SOSTF>2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Cipriano, R.C., and Heartwell, C.M., 1986, Susceptibility of salmonids to furunculosis: Differences between serum and mucus responses against Aeromonas salmonicida: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 115, no. 1, p. 83-88, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1986)115<83:SOSTF>2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"83","endPage":"88","costCenters":[{"id":365,"text":"Leetown Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":129099,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"West Virginia","otherGeospatial":"Reeds Creek","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -79.42211747698131,\n              38.9885778619755\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.42211747698131,\n              38.487463972657935\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.1691257455633,\n              38.487463972657935\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.1691257455633,\n              38.9885778619755\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.42211747698131,\n              38.9885778619755\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"115","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae0e4b07f02db6880d0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cipriano, R.
