Included in the report are hole history, electrical logs, geology (sample descriptions and cores), hydrologic testing, and geochemistry. These wells were drilled as part of a cooperative investigation between the U.S. Geological Survey and the Kansas Geological Survey, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to determine the regional hydrology of the Arbuckle Group and to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of the formation at site-specific areas.</p>\n<p>The test wells were drilled in Miami (site 1), Douglas (site 2), Saline (site 3), and Labette (site4) Counties, Kansas. Depths of the wells ranged from 1,816 feet in Labette County to 3,665 feet in Saline County. All wells have surface casing installed to depths well below the base of freshwater. The wells were cased from land surface to near the top of the Arbuckle Group; the remainder of the hole was left open so that additional hydrologic tests could be made.</p>\n<p>Cores of rocks in the Arbuckle Group were collected at sites 2, 3, and 4. Results ofcore analyses are presented for vertical and horizontal permeability to air, porosity , fluid saturation, accoustic velocity, resistivity indices, and formation factor. Gamma-ray logs of the core were run for correlation with electrical logs. A series of electrical logs was run at each site, consisting of dual-induction laterolog, sonic, and compensated neutron-formation density logs for correlating geologic and hydrologic data. Flow logs and temperature logs also were run at some sites.</p>\n<p>Formation data from drill-stem tests are presented for use in calculating transmissivity, hydraulic conductivity, and hydraulic head. Most of the information about subsurface conditions is obtained from wells along the coast. Ground water is recharged by local precipitation, and slow drainage of ground water to the streams maintains streamflow during winters and periods of no precipitation. Sedimentary bedrock of the Tertiary Kenai Group is the principal source of water to wells, but subsurface data are too sparse to differentiate individual aquifers within the bedrock. Most bedrock wells are completed in poorly consolidated sandstone. Glacial till overlies bedrock in much of the study area, but few wells obtain water from the poorly permeable till. Glacial outwash and abandoned-channel deposits in major drainageways of alluvial plains provide water to wells but are little utilized and have not been explored by drilling. Intermorainal valleys and areas of low relief are poorly drained , and bog deposits overlie surficial materials in parts of the area. Bog deposits contain highly colored, iron-rich water that is undesirable to most consumers. Lacustrine clays overlie and are interbedded with fluvial materials and contain little extractable water. Streams have incised older glacial sediments and deposited alluvium along the present flood plains. Where the alluvium is thick enough, it has good potential for providing ground water to high-capacity wells. However, production of ground water from alluvium or other deposits hydraulically connected to streams will reduce streamflow. Surficial deposits with the best potential for developing significant ground-water supplies in the study area are the deltaic complex near the mouth of Kasilof River, the alluvium of Crooked Creek, and abandoned-channel deposits in the alluvial plain near Ninilchik and in an ancestral drainageway of Tustumena Glacier south of Crooked Creek. For a site near Fairbanks, the average annual (1974-79) load is 24 million metric tons of suspended sediment and 321,000 metric tons of bedload. Upstream, near North Pole, the average annual load is 20.7 million metric tons of suspended sediment and 298 ,000 metric tons of bedload. For both sites bedload is usually 1 to 1.5 percent of suspended sediment load. Particle size distribution of suspended sediment is similar at Fairbanks and North Pole. Median particle size is generally in the silt range, but at some low-water discharges, it is in the very fine sand range. Median particle size of bedload near North Pole is generally in the gravel range, but at some low transport rates, it is in the medium sand range. In 1977 median bedload particle size was comparable at the two sites, but in 1978 the median size was markedly smaller at Fairbanks. In 1979, generally coarser material was transported at both sites, but the decrease in bedload particle size was even greater between the sites. At both sites and at all water discharge and sediment transport rates, suspended load particles are significantly smaller than bedload particles. At North Pole in 1979, median bed material particle size was in the course gravel range; at Fairbanks it was in the medium gravel range in the main channel but in the fine sand range in the overflow part of the channel. These data have been reexamined which resulted in some revisions of epicenters and intensities as well as assignment of intensities to earthquakes that previously had none assigned. Only earthquakes located within the boundary of the State are listed in table 1 even though earthquakes in bordering states or countries may have been felt or caused damage in the state. Intensity values were updated from new and additional data sources that were not available at the time of original compilation. Some epicenters were relocated on the basis of new information. The data shown in table 1 are estimates of the most accurate epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake, on the basis of historical and current information. Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed but are incomplete in many instances, especially for the ones that occurred before seismic instruments were in universal As a result, the volcanic ash fell some 50 miles to the south in the Bull Run watershed, the principal water-supply source for the metropolitan area of Portland, Oreg. Water samples collected from three stream sites within the watershed were compared with samples collected during the same season in previous years. No detectable changes were noted in chemical characteristics. Precipitation samples collected immediately after the June 12-13 ash fall ranged in specific conductance from 20 to 41 micromhos per centimeter at 25C and in pH from 4.0 to 4.3 pH units. Stream samples collected during the May-June period ranged in specific conductance from 18 to 28 micromhos per centimeter at 25C and in pH from 6.7 to 7.5 pH units. Volcanic-ash samples were collected and analyzed for particle size, chemical composition, and weight. Significant differences in particle size of ash were found in samples from two separate eruptions. One hundred thirty-four streams were sampled about three times during the 1979 and 1980 water years for specific conductance, pH, acidity, alkalinity dissolved and total iron, dissolved and total manganese, dissolved sulfate, and dissolved solids. Benthic invertebrate populations were determined and bottom material samples were analyzed for metals. Eleven streams had pH, acidity, alkalinity, total iron, total manganese, and dissolved-sulfate levels indicative of acid-mine drainage. These streams were most common in the Tygart Valley River basin, although indicators of acid-mine drainage were found throughout the Monongahela basin. No benthic invertebrates were found in 25 of 129 streams sampled. Such streams were most common in the Cheat and Tygart Valley River basins. Low flow, mean flow, peak flow, and flow duration data are presented for gaging stations in area 5. Techniques for estimating these data for ungaged sites are presented and referenced. The functions of, and access to, the National Water Data Exchange, WATSTORE, and indexes to water-data activities in coal provinces are presented. Both watersheds were underlain by stratified sedimentary rocks containing two perched aquifers above clay beds which underlaid the major coal seams. Mining involved removing the overburden rocks, including the top aquifer, stripping the coal seam, and recontouring the overburden spoils to the approximate premining shape of the watershed. </p><p>Water levels in the top aquifer declined as mining neared the watersheds, but destruction of observation wells precluded a record of any decline during mining in the watersheds. Depletion of the top aquifer was reflected in base flow of streams, which was reduced and more highly mineralized after mining. Initial saturated thickness of replaced overburden spoils ranged from 0 to 4 feet, based on data from observation wells installed immediately after reclamation. Down-hole specific-conductance measurements of water in the spoils suggest the presence of more highly mineralized water than that in the premining top aquifer. No significant effects of mining are evident on ground-water levels or quality beneath the stripped coal.&nbsp;</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological As a result, the volcanic ash fell some 50 miles to the south in the Bull Run watershed, the principal water-supply source for the metropolitan area of Portland, Oreg. Water samples collected from three stream sites within the watershed were compared with samples collected during the same season in previous years. No detectable changes were noted in chemical characteristics. Precipitation samples collected immediately after the June 12-13 ash fall ranged in specific conductance from 20 to 41 micromhos per centimeter at 25C and in pH from 4.0 to 4.3 pH units. Stream samples collected during the May-June period ranged in specific conductance from 18 to 28 micromhos per centimeter at 25C and in pH from 6.7 to 7.5 pH units. Volcanic-ash samples were collected and analyzed for particle size, chemical composition, and weight. Significant differences in particle size of ash were found in samples from two separate eruptions.
