The area mapped geologically contains about 332 square miles in the west-central part of Mesa County and includes all of Colorado National Monument. During the field work several successive custodians or superintendents and several park naturalists urged that upon completion of my professional paper I prepare a brief account of the geology of the Monument in terms understandable by laymen, and which could be sold at the Visitor Center. This I was happy to do and there resulted 'The geologic story of Colorado National Monument', published by the Colorado and Black Canyon Natural History Association in cooperation with the National Park Service. This report contained colored sketches by John R. Stacy and a colored cover, but the photographs and many of the drawings were reproduced in black and white.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/b1508","usgsCitation":"Lohman, S.W., 1981, The Geologic Story of Colorado National Monument: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1508, xii, 142 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/b1508.","productDescription":"xii, 142 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":93016,"rank":299,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1508/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":167078,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1508/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ac9e4b07f02db67c634","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lohman, Stanley William","contributorId":53361,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lohman","given":"Stanley","email":"","middleInitial":"William","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":213905,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Flood damage in Fort Wayne was estimated by the Mayor to be 11 million dollars. Approximately 15 percent of the city was inundated, and 2,400 of its 190,000 residents were forced to leave their homes. The estimate of damage in Adams and Allen Counties by Civil Defense officials was 44 million dollars. The Maumee River at New Haven exceeded the peak stage of record, 21.4 feet, by 2.2 feet. The peak discharge at this stream-gaging station, 22,400 cubic feet per second, was about equal to that of a 75-year flood. Recurrence intervals of peak flows on streams tributary to the Maumee River ranged from 5 to 50 years. The results indicate that there is a 73 percent probability that the three major New York City reservoirs (Pepacton, Cannonsville, and Neversink) would be full by June 1, 1981, and only a 9 percent probability that storage would return to the \"drought warning\" sector of the operations curve sometime in the next year. Almost 350,000 people or 40 percent of Idaho's (estimating 1979 population from Rand McNally (1979)) live in the area, which constitutes about 30 percent of Idaho's land area.</p><p>The great majority of this population resides in the major irrigated agricultural areas along the Snake River between American Falls and Ashton and between Bliss and Lake Walcott, which contain the important and growing commercial centers of Rexberg, Idaho Falls, Blackfoot, Pocatello, Burley-Rupert, Twin Falls, and Jerome. These areas encompass almost two-thirds of Idaho's irrigated croplands, and, along with water, are the region's most important resource. Major products include potatoes, sugar beets, alfalfa, small grains, and other crops.</p><p>Along the margins of the Plain and in adjacent basins, smaller areas of irrigated farming and population are present, such as Teton Basin, Mud Lake area, Big and Little Lost River Valleys, Big and Little Wood River Valleys, and Raft River Valley. In several of these basins and in nearby upland areas, dry farming of grains is important. Some of these lands are now being converted to irrigated croplands. Presently about 3,000 earthquake-related publications (including meeting abstracts) are produced yearly. In order to keep up with this current literature, a computer-based bibliographic system was implemented as part of a research project called \"Worldwide Earthquake Research Databases\" under the direction of W.H.K. From this database, a quarterly Author Index and an Annual Index (including author, keyword and address listings) are prepared. Geologic units exposed in the North Horn Mountain area range in age from Late Cretaceous to Holocene and contain two mineable seams of Cretaceous coal. The area is in the drainage basin of the San Rafael River, in the Colorado River Basin. Runoff from the mountain is ephemeral. This runoff to the San Rafael River is by way of Cottonwood and Perron Creeks and represents less than 10 percent of their average annual runoff. Probable peak discharges (100-year flood) for the ephemeral streams draining North Horn Mountain are estimated to range from 200 to 380 cubic feet per second.</p><p>The chemical quality of surface water in the area is good. The water is generally of a calcium magnesium bicarbonate type with average dissolved solids less than 500 milligrams per liter. Annual sediment yield in most of the area ranges from 0.1 to 0.2 acre-foot per square mile but locally is as high as 1.0 acre-foot per square mile. Most of the sediment is eroded during cloudbursts.</p><p>Most of the ground water above the coal on North Horn Mountain probably is in perched aquifers. These aquifers support the flow of small seeps and springs. In some areas, the regional water table appears to extend upward into the coal. The principal source of recharge is precipitation that probably moves to aquifers along faults, joints, or fractures. This movement is apparently quite rapid. The dissolved-solids concentrations of ground water in the North Horn Mountain area range from less than 500 to about 1,000 milligrams per liter.</p><p>Coal mining on North Horn Mountain should have minor \"effects on the quantity and quality of surface water. The maximum predicted decrease in the annual flow of Ferron and Cottonwood Creeks is less than U percent. The sediment loads of affected streams could be significantly increased if construction were to take place during the summer cloudburst season. Subsidence, which usually follows underground coal mining, could create rock fractures through which a perched aquifer might be drained, thus depleting the flow of seeps or springs fed by that aquifer. It is considered unlikely that the mining will adversely affect the chemical quality of the ground water.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","doi":"10.3133/ofr81141","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management","usgsCitation":"Graham, M., Tooley, J.E., and Price, D., 1981, Preliminary hydrologic evaluation of the North Horn Mountain coal-resource area, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 81-141, 34 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr81141.","productDescription":"34 p.","numberOfPages":"34","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":141972,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0141/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":36811,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1981/0141/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","otherGeospatial":"North Horn Mountain","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abce4b07f02db6732e3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Graham, M.J.","contributorId":61424,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Graham","given":"M.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159277,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Tooley, John E.","contributorId":83528,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Tooley","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159278,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Price, Don","contributorId":30608,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Price","given":"Don","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":159276,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Seventy-three streams were sampled three times during the 1979 and 1980 water years for specific conductance, pH, acidity, alkalinity, dissolved and total iron, dissolved and total manganese, dissolved sulfate, and dissolved solids. Benthic invertebrate populations were determined and botom material samples were analyzed for metals. Sixteen streams had pH, acidity, alkalinity, total iron, total manganese, and dissolved sulfate indicative of acid-mine drainage. These streams were most common in the Redbank and Blacklick Creek basins and in the Conemaugh and lower Kiskiminetas River basins. Benthic invertebrates were not found in 11 of 64 streams sampled. An additional 13 streams had low benthic invertebrate diversity indices. Low diversity indices were most common in the southern part of area 3. Low flow, mean flow, peak flow, and flow duration data are presented for gaging stations in area 3. Techniques for estimating these data for ungaged sites are presented and referenced.
