The anticipated increase in strip mining for coal can be expected to alter the geochemical and biogeochemical environment. because such activities destroy the native vegetation communities, rearrange the rock strata, and disrupt natural soil development. This study investigated the variability in the biogeochemistry of native plant species at both undisturbed and altered sites and assessed the importance of the observed differences. Three studies are involved in this investigation: Study 1, the biogeochemical variability of native species found at sites throughout that part of the basin underlain by economically recoverable coal; Study 2, the biogeochemical variability of native species growing on soils considered favorable for use in the topsoiling of spoil areas; and Study 3, the biogeochemical variability of native species on rehabilitated sites at the San Juan coal mine. \r\n\r\nSummary statistics for concentrations of 35 elements (and ash yield) are reported in Study 1 for galleta grass, broom snakeweed, and fourwing saltbush. The concentrations of manganese, molybdenum, nickel, and uranium (and possibly iron and selenium) in galleta show regional patterns, with the highest values generally found in the south-central region and western edge of the study area. Differences in the concentration of elements between species was generally subtle (less than a factor of two) except for the following: ash yield of saltbush was two times that of the other plants; boron in snakeweed and saltbush was four times greater than in galleta; iron in galleta was two times greater than in saltbush; and, calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and sulfur were generally highest in saltbush. \r\n\r\nSummary statistics (including the 95-percent expected range) for concentrations of 35 elements (and ash yield) are reported from Study 2 for galleta and broom snakeweed growing on the Sheppard, Shiprock, and Doak soil association. Significant regional (greater than 10 km) variation for aluminum, iron, sulfur, vanadium, and zirconium in galleta are reported; however, for most elements, a significant proportion of the variation in the data was measured locally (less than 0.1 km). This variation indicates that samples of galleta and snakeweed taken more than 10 km apart vary, in their element composition, little more than plants sampled as close together as 0.1 km. \r\n\r\nThe concentrations of 35 elements (and ash yield) in alkali sacaton and fourwing saltbush, which were collected on a rehabilitation plot at the San Juan mine (Study 3), are compared with those of control samples of similar material from native sites from throughout the ,an Juan Basin. Concentrations of aluminum, arsenic, boron, cobalt, copper, fluorine, iron, lead, manganese, sodium, and uranium in samples of saltbush growing over spoil generally exceed the levels of these elements in control samples. For many elements, concentrations in mine samples are from two to five times higher 1 han concentrations in the control samples. Sodium concentrations i saltbush, however, were 100 times higher in mine samples than in control samples. This high concentration reflects a corresponding : OO-fold increase in the extractable sodium levels in spoil material s compared to C-horizon control samples. Sampled plants from the l1ine area, spaced relatively close together (5 m (meters) or less), vary greatly in their element compositions, apparently in response 1 J the heterogenous composition and element availability of the l1ine soils. Topsoiling to a depth of 20 cm (centimeters) does little to meliorate the uptake of elements from spoil by saltbush.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/pp1134D","usgsCitation":"Gough, L.P., and Severson, R.C., 1981, Biogeochemical variability of plants at native and altered sites, San Juan Basin, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1134, 26 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1134D.","productDescription":"26 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":124451,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1134d/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":65476,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1134d/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a49e4b07f02db6247b6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gough, L. (2) an area of soils considered to have potential for use as topsoil in mined-land reclamation. and (3) an area of the San Juan coal mine that has been regraded. topsoiled, and revegetated. Maps made of concentrations of 16 elements in area 1 soils show no gradational pattern across the region. Further. these maps do not correspond to those showing geology or soil types. Sodic or saline problems, and a possible but unproven deficiency of zinc available to plants. may make some of the soils in this area undesirable for use as topsoil in mined-land reclamation. Taxonomic great groups of soil in this area cannot be distinguished because each great group tends to have a large within-group variability if compared to the between-group variability. In area 2 the major soils sampled were of the Sheppard. Shiprock. and Doak association. These soils are quite uniform in chemical composition and are not greatly saline or sodic. As in area 1 soils. zinc deficiency may cause a problem in revegetating most of these soils. It is difficult to distinguish soil taxonomic families by using their respective chemical compositions. because of small between-family variability. Topsoil from a reclaimed area of the San Juan mine (area 3) most closely resembles the chemical composition of natural C horizons of soil from area 1. Spoil material that has not been topsoiled is likely to cause sodic-and saline-related problems in revegetation and may cause boron toxicity in plants. Topsoiling has apparently ameliorated these potential problems for plant growth on mine spoil. \r\n\r\nTotal and extractable concentrations for elements and other parameters for each area of the San Juan Basin provide background information for the evaluation of the chemical quality of soils in each area.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/pp1134C","usgsCitation":"Gough, L.P., and Severson, R.C., 1981, Geochemical variability of natural soils and reclaimed mine-spoil soils in the San Juan Basin, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1134, iv, 39 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp1134C.","productDescription":"iv, 39 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":405923,"rank":3,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_74390.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":65475,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1134c/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":126698,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/1134c/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","otherGeospatial":"San Juan Basin","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -108.96240234375,\n 35.6126508187567\n ],\n [\n -106.54541015625,\n 35.6126508187567\n ],\n [\n -106.54541015625,\n 36.97622678464096\n ],\n [\n -108.96240234375,\n 36.97622678464096\n ],\n [\n -108.96240234375,\n 35.6126508187567\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b20e4b07f02db6ab962","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gough, L. Streamflow was measured and water samples were collected three times during the study period. Samples of bottom material were collected in September. Concentrations of dissolved solids ranged from 45 to 391 milligrams per liter. Water hardness ranged from 31 milligrams per liter (soft) to 280 milligrams per liter (very hard). Fecal-coliform bacteria densities ranged from 40 to an estimated 540 colonies per 100 milliliters and may have exceeded the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency criterion for bathing waters. Total nitrogen concentrations ranged from 0.90 to 2.2 milligrams per liter. Total phosphorus concentrations often exceeded the State standard and ranged from 0.08 to 0.46 milligrams per liter. Low dissolved-oxygen concentrations (2.5 to 5.4 milligrams per liter at midday) were measured in Larkin Creek and a major tributary. Iron (290 to 9,800 micrograms per liter), manganese (60 to 3,100 micrograms per liter), and mercury (0.0 to 0.2 micrograms per liter) concentrations at times exceeded Environmental Protection Agency criteria for domestic use or freshwater aquatic life. High concentrations of toxaphene (20 to 170 micrograms per kilogram dry weight) were present in all bottom-material samples. In two water samples, concentrations of dieldrin (0.01 micrograms per liter) exceeded the Environmental Protection Agency criterion for freshwater aquatic life. These wells are suggested to replace and upgrade nearly 650 observation wells currently measured in separate State and Federal programs, and are arranged in four groups or networks each having specific objectives. These groups are (1) a climatic-effects network, (2) a terrane-effects network, (3) a local-effects network, and (4) an areal-effects network. Recommendations are also made regarding additional observation-well coverage in some areas of the State.

Records-review and network-review procedures constituted the largest amount of effort in this study and required a considerable amount of organization to keep track of well records and water-level data. These procedures are outlined in this report as a guide for those who are contemplating an observation-well program review.

The report also contains suggested organizational contents of a data file, including procedures for records processing, and various forms used to document the review and data-collection efforts.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological
