This report provides information on the floods of September 16, 1975 in the Utuado, Puerto Rico area. The report was prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Puerto Rico Department of Natural Resources. The study provides data and flood-plain information for planners and designers involved in the use of flood-plain land in the Utuado area. The study included the area flooded by the Rio Grande de Arecibo and Rio Vivi in urban Utuado.

All samples were suitable for drinking water with respect to the constituents tested. Tests for fecal coliform bacteria were negative. The concentrations of dissolved solids, composed mainly of calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, and sulfate, were less than 300 milligrams per liter. Concentrations of sodium, potassium, and chloride were 3.5 milligrams per liter or less.
From March to June, the maximum concentration of nitrite plus nitrate as nitrogen decreased from 0.57 to 0.29 milligram per liter and the mean concentrations decreased from 0.16 to 0.11 milligram per liter, probably as a result of dilution of ground water by snowmelt. The concentrations in samples from the same wells generally were less during 1979 than during 1974-75. Isolation of sewage effluent in shallow zones by hardpan, consumption of nutrients by abundant phreatophytes, filtration of bacteria by the soil or aquifer, and dilution by underflow and recharge evidently combine to maintain the quality of the well waters within acceptable limits.

Specific conductance, biochemical oxygen demand, nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, and densities of bacteria in the river increased in a downstream direction. At site 1 (upstream) the mean concentration of total nitrogen was 0.28 milligram per liter with a mean total phosphorus concentration of 0.05 milligram per liter. At site 3 (downstream) mean-total nitrogen and phosphorus were 0.48 and 0.14 milligram per liter respectively. Specific conductance ranged from 90 to 125 micromhos per centimeter at site 1 and from 155 to 175 at site 3. The fecal coliform to fecal streptoccai bacteria ratio of most samples at site 1 was less than 2.0. At site 3 the ratio exceeded 4.0 in most samples indicating wastes of human origin were probably present. The aquifer in Kansas underlies an area of 31,000 square miles in the western and south-central part of the State. This aquifer is a hydraulically connected assemblage of unconsolidated water-bearing deposits. In western Kansas, the High Plains aquifer consists principally of the Ogallala Formation of late Tertiary age and the overlying deposits of Quaternary age. In south-central Kansas, the aquifer consists of unconsolidated deposits principally of the Quaternary age. Valley alluvium of Quaternary age also is included in the deposits in both areas. The High Plains aquifer is delimited on the east by outcrops of Permian or Cretaceous rocks and by unsaturated deposits of Quaternary age.

Data that would fill voids left by previous studies are depth to bedrock and depth to good-quality water beneath the two playas in the valley. Depths to bedrock calculated from a gravity survey in Lemmon Valley indicate that the western part of Lemmon Valley is considerably deeper than the eastern part. Maximum depth in the western part is about 2 ,600 feet below land surface. This depression approximately underlies the Silver Lake playa. A smaller, shallower depression with a maximum depth of about 1,500 feet below land surface exists about 2.5 miles north of the playa. The eastern area is considerably shallower. The maximum calculated depth to bedrock is about 1,000 feet below land surface, but the depth throughout most the eastern area is only about 400 feet below land surface. An electrical resistivity survey in Lemmon Valley consisting of 10 Schlumberger soundings was conducted around the playas. The maximum depth of poor-quality water (characterized by a resistivity less than 20 ohm-meters) differed considerably from place to place. Maximum depths of poor-quality water beneath the playa east of Stead varied from about 120 feet to almost 570 feet below land surface. At the Silver Lake playa, the maximum depths varied from about 40 feet in the west to 490 feet in the east. 1979","docAbstract":"INTRODUCTION\r\n\r\nThe San Simon Wash area includes about 2,300 mi2 in the Papago Indian Reservation in south-central Arizona and is characterized by low mountains separated by broad alluvial basins. Most of the basins and mountains trend north and slightly northwest. The basins are underlain by a thick sequence of basin-fill deposits. The mountains are composed of crystalline and consolidated sedimentary rocks, and thin alluvial deposits are present in the narrow mountain valleys and on pediments.\r\n\r\nThe climate is semiarid, and the precipitation pattern is characterized by two distinct types of storms--local summer thunderstorms and regional winter storms. In most of the area the average annual precipitation ranges from 5 to 10 in.; in the Baboquivari Mountains, however, the average annual precipitation is 20 in. (Sellers and Hill, 1974, p. 7). Owing to the small amount of precipitation and the abundant sunshine, the evaporation rate is about 8 to 10 times the average rainfall (Heindl and others, 1962). Storm runoff occurs mainly as sheetflow and floods of short duration. Although some runoff is diverted to catchment tanks for use by livestock, runoff is not known to be diverted for irrigation or public-supply uses.\r\n\r\nGround-water development has been slight compared with that in many areas in Arizona. In 1979 about 2,700 acre-ft of ground water was withdrawn, of which 2,200 acre-ft was used for irrigation at Papago Farms, and 500 acre-ft was used for public and livestock supplies.\r\n\r\nThe hydrologic data on which these maps are based are available, for the most part, in computer-printout form and may be consulted at the Arizona Department of Water Resources, 99 East Virginia, Phoenix, and at U.S. Geological Survey offices in: Federal Building, 301 West Congress Street, Tucson, and Valley Center, Suite 1880, Phoenix. Graham County, an area of 900 square miles in northwestern Kansas, is within the rolling, moderately to well-dissected terrain on the eastern edge of the High Plains. The eastward-flowing South Fork Solomon River separates the county into nearly equal parts.
The principal source of water for domestic, stock, municipal, and irrigation use if from wells in the shallow unconsolidated deposits. The aquifers occur chiefly in the Ogallala Formation of Miocene age and in deposits of Quaternary age.

One set was made in 1977, a relatively dry year, and the other set was made in 1979, a relatively wet year. The map shows that the potentiometric surface in 1979, in northern Prince Georges County and southern Anne Arundel County, was higher than it was in 1977, with a maximum measured rise of 9 feet. In southern parts of the mapped area, the 1979 potentiometric surface was lower than the 1977 surface, with a maximum measured decline of 11 feet. The network of observation wells was developed and is operated and maintained as part of the cooperative program between the U.S. Geological Survey and agencies of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
