Breeding populations increased from 18 pairs in 1975 to 57 pairs in 1981. All unhatched eggs salvaged for analyses of contaminant residues contained DDT metabolites. Mean DDE levels varied from 0.9 to 2.4 ppm and about 7% of the samples had residues that approached critical levels that could affect reproductive success. DDE levels did not decline from 1975 to 1981 and residues leveled off at higher values than those in South Carolina and Louisiana pelican populations. PCB [polychlorinated biphenyl] residues also remained stable. Endrin was detected only in 1975.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Wilson Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","usgsCitation":"King, K.A., Blankinship, D., Payne, E., Krynitsky, A.J., and Hensler, G.L., 1985, Brown pelican populations and pollutants in Texas 1975-1981: The Wilson Bulletin, v. 97, no. 2, p. 201-214.","productDescription":"201-214","startPage":"201","endPage":"214","numberOfPages":"14","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":196859,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":17655,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://elibrary.unm.edu/sora/Wilson/v097n02/p0201-p0214.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"volume":"97","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a09e4b07f02db5fb095","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"King, Kirk A.","contributorId":9203,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"King","given":"Kirk","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335268,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Blankinship, D.R.","contributorId":82010,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Blankinship","given":"D.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335272,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Payne, E.","contributorId":79583,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Payne","given":"E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335271,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3},{"text":"Krynitsky, A. Substantial fluctuations in productivity and survival occurred even in the absence of hunting seasons for 9 of the 17 years. Annual survival estimates ranged from 0.41 to 0.97 for birds> I year of age; mean annual survival for the 17-year period was 0.77, little different from an estimate of 0.78 recently obtained from ringing records. This summary confirms high adult survival for Atlantic Brant as in other long-lived birds with delayed sexual maturity and irregulur breeding failure. The combinution of these factors results in unequal age-cohort representation from year to year. Population size alone, therefore. is not an indicator of population resilience. Proper management should aim to maintain Atlantic Brant at a level sufficient to rebound from sequential breeding and wintering failure. We propose management by age-cohort as the best scheme for tbese geese. Collections of wastewater, aquatic invertebrates, fish, salamanders, and small mammals were made in several streams in the oil fields of western Pennsylvania during 1980-81. Estimates of the petroleum content of two wastewater discharges were high (21.9 and 8.4 ppm) and one was low (0.3 ppm). Water conductivity was inversely related to aquatic invertebrate biomass. Hydrocarbons accumulated in significantly greater amounts in crayfish, fish, and small mammals from collection sites with oil extraction activity than from sites without oil extraction activity. Estimates of total petroleum in invertebrates, trout, and suckers averaged between 200 and 280 ppm for oil extraction sites and between 8 and 80 ppm for sites without oil extraction activity: Oil extraction activity did not affect metal accumulation by fish. Oil and wastewater discharges in oil fields disrupt community composition and can cause an overall reduction in stream productivity.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Oil and Petrochemical Pollution","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/S0143-7127(85)90247-9","usgsCitation":"Albers, P., Belisle, A.A., Swineford, D.M., and Hall, R., 1985, Environmental contamination in the oil fields of western Pennsylvania: Oil and Petrochemical Pollution, v. 2, no. 4, p. 265-280, https://doi.org/10.1016/S0143-7127(85)90247-9.","productDescription":"265-280","startPage":"265","endPage":"280","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198247,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":269560,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1016/S0143-7127(85)90247-9"}],"volume":"2","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db602412","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Albers, P.H.","contributorId":26646,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Albers","given":"P.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":335452,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Belisle, A. Productivity was determined for about 120 breeding attempts from 1975-85. Almost all sites, for which productivity information is available for two or more years, have hatched young. Average values for fledging success were ca. 1.4 young/attempt for all active sites and ca. 2.3 young/attempt for successful sites. Eggshell thickness values were highly varied, but few samples reflect thinning sufficient to cause reproductive failure, and the population appears to be increasing slightly. Management practices which can further benefit the falcon include: controlling pesticide use, habitat protection, and information management.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Raptor Research Foundation Symposium on the Management of Birds of Prey. For many species all that was known was the general range and habitat type. While the logistical and political challenges are still present, the last few years has seen the opening of a door to what will almost surely be a flood of scientific investigations. From over 40,000 ground miles traveled in 16 countries, field contact with over two thirds of the raptor species, and interviews with conservation officers in 10 nations, I will report on some raptor concentration areas, identify topics for future research, and generalize on raptor conservation issues. I will also briefly mention some recent biological studies and touch briefly on the challenges awaiting the biologist who tries his or her hand at reaping the rewards that are present in abundance for those who engage in raptor studies in Latin America.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Raptor Research Foundation Symposium on the Management of Birds of Prey. This report summarizes the progress made on this Andean Condor breeding and research project, with emphasis on recent fostering/cross-fostering studies. These studies include: (a) fostering eggs/chicks between Andean Condors; (b) fostering of two chicks each to Andean Condor pairs; (c) cross-fostering of a Turkey Vulture (<i>Cathartes aura</i>) to Andean Condors; and (d) cross-fostering an Andean Condor chick to wild California Condors.
