Average freshwater outflow from the Muddy Creek basin to the Rhode River estuary was 12.2 cfs during the period October 1, 1971, to December 31, 1975. Harmonic equations were used to describe seasonal maximum and minimum stream-temperature patterns at 12 sites in the basin. These equations were fitted to continuous water-temperature data obtained periodically at each site between November 1970 and June 1978. The harmonic equations explain at least 78 percent of the variance in maximum stream temperatures and 81 percent of the variance in minimum temperatures. Standard errors of estimate averaged 2.3C (Celsius) for daily maximum water temperatures and 2.1C for daily minimum temperatures. Mean annual water temperatures developed for a 5.4-year base period ranged from 11.9C at Muddy Creek to 13.1C at Many Fork Branch. The largest variations in stream temperatures were detected at thermograph sites below ponded reaches and where forest coverage was sparse or missing. At most sites the largest variations in daily water temperatures were recorded in April whereas the smallest were in September and October. The low thermal inertia of streams in the Muddy Creek basin tends to amplify the impact of surface energy-exchange processes on short-period stream-temperature patterns. Thus, in response to meteorologic events, wide ranging stream-temperature perturbations of as much as 6C have been documented in the basin. Samples taken at the record or near-record low flows of the 1976-77 drought, showed that calcium and bicarbonate were the predominant ions in the water. Inflow of irrigation return water to the river caused a threefold to sevenfold increase in specific conductance between river kilometer 42 and the farthest downstream station at kilometer 8. During the four sampling periods, the increase in total nitrogen concentrations was twofold to sixfold in that reach. Upstream of kilometer 42, the river was free of apparent water-quality degradation, with the exception of occasional increases in nitrogen and phosphorus. Measurements of primary productivity and phytoplankton in Lake McClure and at three river stations gave indications of trophic conditions in the river system. Similar geochemical survey based on trace-element analyses have been credited with the discovery of many types of mineral deposits (Hawkes and Webb, 1962). Although no metallic mineral deposits are known in the study area, the same sequence of rocks that is exposed there contains small deposits of copper-bearing sulfides 10-18 mi (16-28 km) west and southwest of the wilderness (Gair and Slack, 1979). Keith (1907, p. 8) reports minor amounts of copper sulfides and iron sulfides in schist and in quartz veins cutting schist near Retreat, 4 mi (6.5 km) northwest of the wilderness. An old gold mine, the Boylston mine, on Forge Mountain 10 mi (16 km) east of the wilderness (Nitze and Hanna, 1896, p. 181-191) is in metasedimentary rocks of the Great Smoky Group (Hadley and Nelson, 1971) which are probably younger than the rocks exposed in the wilderness.

East-west traverses were spaced at 0.8-km intervals at a constant altitude of 1370 m (4500 ft) above sea level, Contour interval is 20 and 100 gammas, depending upon the steepness of local gradients in the Earth's magnetic field. A regional magnetic field (the International Geomagnetic Reference Field - 1975, updated to the month flown) of approximately 5-6 gammas/km was removed from the data be fore con touring.
