This report documents the circumstances for a number of. cases where birds of prey were killed by OP pesticides in the United States. Many of the cases were brought to our attention by the U S. Fish and Wildlife Service Division of Law Enforcement The cases may be divided into three categories: misuse, approved use, and unknown. The birds were first captured and blood-sampled for monitoring residue burdens and trends in the late 1970' s. Only 29 Peregrines were sampled in 1978 and 1979, but 111 were sampled in 1980. The initial investigation showed that DDE in the plasma of spring migrants returning from Latin America for the first time declined significantly during the study (through 1980). In the spring of 1984, 48 Peregrines were captured at Padre Island with blood samples again collected. This report will compare plasma residue data from the earlier study with residues obtained in 1984.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Raptor Research Foundation Symposium on the Management of Birds of Prey. Prior to this study we had obtained only addled eggs which were possibly not representative of the egg-laying population if addled eggs contained different levels of organochlorines than viable eggs that hatched. Ten eggs were collected from the American (anatum) population (8 upper Yukon River, 2 Tanana River) and 10 eggs from the Arctic (tundrius) popUlation were later collected in the study area. Productivity at specific eyries and eggshell thickness were evaluated in relation to residue burdens in sample eggs collected. Residue levels and residue profiles for the two subspecies were compared. The tentative 'critical' residue level in Peregrine eggs of 15-20 ppm DDE (wet weight) was compared to results obtained from this study. We also present some data on residue levels in prey species from the study area.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Raptor Research Foundation Symposium on the Management of Birds of Prey. About 2400 randomly distributed roadside routes of 50 three-minute stops each provide the basic data for computer analysis. One of the reports produced shows the percentage of routes on which each species is encountered in each state and each Canadian province. This percentage is used to show expansion and contraction of breeding range and also important changes in frequency of encounter within various portions of the range of each species. Most of the recent changes in range fall in one of these 7 categories: (1) introduced species; (2) species given special protection; (3) species benefiting from artificial feeding in winter; (4) species taking advantage of shelterbelts; (5) species nesting on large highway bridges and dams; (6) species that feed on grain lost during mechanical harvesting: and (7) species losing habitat as a result of urban expansion. Examples of each category are supported by changes in the rate of encounter.","largerWorkType":{"id":4,"text":"Book"},"largerWorkTitle":"Acta XVIII Congressus Internationalis Ornithologici, volume II","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":4,"text":"Other Government Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"Academy of Sciences of the USSR","publisherLocation":"Moscow","collaboration":"held in Moscow, August 16-24, 1982","usgsCitation":"Robbins, C., 1985, Recent changes in the ranges of North American birds, chap. of Acta XVIII Congressus Internationalis Ornithologici, volume II, p. 737-742.","productDescription":"580-1335","startPage":" 737","endPage":"742","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":196489,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a60e4b07f02db634cd0","contributors":{"editors":[{"text":"Ilyichev, V.D.","contributorId":114166,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ilyichev","given":"V.D.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506067,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gavrilov, V.M.","contributorId":112284,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gavrilov","given":"V.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":506066,"contributorType":{"id":2,"text":"Editors"},"rank":2}],"authors":[{"text":"Robbins, C.S.","contributorId":53907,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Robbins","given":"C.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":327864,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Diets were formulated to simulate either a natural diet high in invertebrates or one high in vegetation. Two diets low in protein and energy simulated stress diets. Feed intake during the 1979-80 winter, when diets varied the most, was 30% higher for canvasbacks fed the low energy (1543 kcal/kg) diet than for canvasbacks fed the high energy (3638 kcal/kg) diet. Body weight of males and females did not differ between groups fed different diets, but there were seasonal differences (P(O.05) for both sexes aggregated across diets. Feed intake and body weights were greatest in November and April and least in January and February. Canvasbacks lost weight and ate less during the most stressful periods despite ad libitum feed supplies. No differences could be detected in the behavior of captive canvasbacks as a result of the diets they received. Differences due to season and sex were observed for some behaviors. Inactivity increased (P(0.05) during the winter apparently as a mechanism to conserve energy. Overall, captive canvasbacks were able to maintain themselves during winter on diets with as little as 10% protein and 1543 kcal/kg provided adequate quantities of food were available. Availability of low energy food (e.g. clams) may be the limiting factor in regard to winter survival of wild canvasbacks. The distribution and abundance of canvasbacks in some wintering areas ultimately has been influenced by the quantity and probably the quality of available nutrients. Data from this study indicate that canvasbacks are unable to adjust intake rates to compensate for low energy foods and may subsequently store less fat or modify behavior and microclimate. However, decreased weight, feed intake, and activity of ducks fed ad libitum rations occurred in mid-winter irrespective of diet quality and appeared to be an endogenous component of their annual cycle which persists in captivity. These changes apparently have a selective advantage of increasing the probability of survival in ducks by decreasing energy expenditure during periods of winter stress.","language":"English","publisher":"Ph.D. Thesis, University of Maryland","publisherLocation":"College Park, MD","usgsCitation":"Perry, M., 1985, Seasonal Influence of Nutrients on the Physiology and Behavior of Captive Canvasbacks (Aythya valisineria), x, 157.","productDescription":"x, 157","costCenters":[{"id":531,"text":"Patuxent Wildlife Research Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":201317,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f5e4b07f02db5f10af","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Perry, Matthew C. 0000-0001-6452-9534","orcid":"https://orcid.org/0000-0001-6452-9534","contributorId":16372,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Perry","given":"Matthew C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":327068,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
